To modern enthusiasts, a “superbike” is a plastic and carbon fiber wrapped missile with crippling ergonomics and power so overwhelming it would be nigh-on unmanageable without the category’s now de rigueur electronic aids. But when the term was first coined, it applied to bikes like today’s Honda CB1100F Bol d’Or, unfaired machines with very conventional steel frames, big air-cooled engines, and relatively upright ergonomics. The chassis may have been unrefined by modern standards and, at 567lbs with half a tank of fuel, it was absolutely no lightweight, but the air-cooled twin-cam 1062cc engine produced a claimed 108hp and the expected midrange torque, which meant the bike was good for a 144mph top speed. Named after the famous French endurance race of the same name, the Bol d’Or version of the bike was never officially imported to the US, making this one exceedingly rare.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen one of these for sale, so I’m not sure what an appropriate price should be, but the $7,500 asking price seems very low for such a rare machine. Regular CB1100Fs are all over the place, depending on condition, but nice examples generally sell for more than that. This one isn’t pristine, but has wear appropriate for a bike its age, and those Comstar wheels look very shiny. Not sure what’s going on with the miles indicated on the listing: the odometer on the bike clearly shows 26,257km, which would be 16,315 miles. Keep in mind that this one isn’t actually in the country yet, so caveat emptor everyone.
