If this is not your first time on our site, you are by now familiar with our intense love of all things tiny and Japanese. You know the specs, you know the benefits of bikes that sacrifice all-out, underpants-ruining speed for balance and trick engineering. So I’ll spare you. Instead, let’s talk about the things beyond engineering that make these things so cool, the je ne sais quoi that surrounds these little jewels.
1990 Honda CBR250RR for sale on eBay
Let’s start with the fact that Honda took the time to make the 1990 CBR250RR something other than a thumper-powered scooter with a fairing, proving that not everything needs to be about horsepower and top speed, especially not on the street. In this country, the smaller option is never a platform for cool technology; it’s always the thrown-together, plastic and pot metal option for cheapskates, wussies or those who don’t know any better.
Nobody here would ever have shelled out new-bike money for a 60-horsepower crotch rocket when for the same or only slightly more money you could get a full-bore, 600-plus-cc JATO booster with a license plate. But the rest of the world understands that you maybe don’t need all that juice in a street bike. Maybe, just maybe, there would be fewer sausage creatures to shovel off the roadside if bikes didn’t need to be going Mach Chicken to be enjoyable.
Thanks to their tiered licensing systems, tighter, twistier roadways and astronomical gas prices, the Japanese home market got these little wonders, which rev to 20k RPM, pack gear-driven cams and make up their 250ccs over four teeny pistons. They have well thought-out brakes, suspension and chassis tech and high-quality fit and finish. Someone cared about how they came out, which you don’t get in a $4,500 late-model CBR250.
This 1990 Honda CBR250RR is in excellent shape, and comes from a seller whose store is packed with myriad NOS OEM and high-quality aftermarket parts for all manner of cool old Japanese machines. The bike has one small crack in the fairing, and the tank has been repainted to match the plastics. It has covered 9,200 miles and sports a period aftermarket exhaust.

Basically the motorcycle is a 9 out of 10 cosmetically, with the exception of a small crack on the front fairing right by the mounting bolt which can be seen on one of the pictures but other than that the body work and paint is perfect. The bike also has a nice sounding aftermarket JMCA performance exhaust. Mechanically the bike runs and rides perfect. All of the electrical components work as they should; lights, blinkers, horn, speedo, tach, temp gauge, all work properly. The bike just had a full service tune up including new tires, carburetors cleaned and adjusted new chain; mechanically everything was inspected and replaced if necessary, all fluids were flushed.

With plenty of time left in the auction, the bidding is still below the seller’s reserve.
This sort of bikes really signify a bit problem that I have with most of today’s so-called entry-level bikes. Because I grew up with those mad 250s and 400s, when I look at today’s entry-level bikes, I had to think, when did we go backward, and more worryingly, when did we decide that it’s okay? Know what I mean?
Growing up, had a 250 Can-Am MX and it was fun times. Later, small displacement street machines and it was continual fun. Small twisty country or mountain roads this machine Is a “10 grin factor”. There are certain intangible assets that are difficult to describe but the winning bidder will understand when riding this bike. Ride safe.
Love these. Just needs cartridge forks and a mdern shock.
I think the crux of the dilemma really was cost. I japan sold these today in the us market with a cost $1200 shy of 600 rr, for the money everyone else still choose the. 600. Its just human nature. I hate economics in matters of lust.
I drool though thinking that if a 600 can rev to 16k, could a modern 250 rev to 24k? Heaven!
Every time I see one of these on ebay I kick myself for not buying it. Currently have a 1990 CB-1 but would love to add this to my stable!
Curious as to the source of the aftermarket plastic. Thought worth a mention to anyone considering bidding as you will be disappointing if you pay premium for bike and end up with Chinese bodywork on it…
Just recently added one of these to the collection and what a cool piece! It’ll wear you out on the highway but I didn’t buy it to do that anyway. What a song that engine sings when you’re going up through the gears. Runs like a Swiss watch. As for the Chinese bodywork, mine has it and I’m impressed with it. Fits well and the quality of the finish is very good. There does seem to be some inconsistency from set to set with the accuracy of some of the smaller decals. This bike on Ebay has the wrong decal on the tail section. At least there is an option out there for bikes with messed up originals. If you’re on the fence about getting one of these bikes, do it! I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
