In spite of their reputation for producing cutting-edge sports motorcycles, Ducati fans themselves can be very traditional, and tend to get a bit leery when you mess with the formula that makes their bikes special. The brand significantly clung to their “L-twin” configuration with real tenacity until they were looking to compete in MotoGP, and realized they couldn’t meet the required performance targets with just two cylinders and an otherwise level playing field. So their V4 prototype racers were born. The Ducati D16RR Desmosedici was a road-going race-replica that, unsurprisingly shared very few components with the company’s actual racing machines, although they went so far as to design an entirely new MotoGP-inspired V4 engine and a bike to go around it, which is almost more impressive. The resulting Desmosedici produced nearly 200hp from 989cc, with gear-driven cams and a “twin-pulse” firing order that grouped combustion events into pairs for improved traction and a v-twin-adjacent sound. Ultimately, the company embraced the potential of the V4 for their superbikes as well, paving the way for Ducati’s current success in WSBK and in the garages of well-heeled squids the world over.

This D16 RR in GP Team livery left the selling Ducati dealer after being prepped and ridden the required 10 miles specified by Ducati for all Desmosedici models prior to being delivered to the buyer. Fuel was removed from the tank and the battery was removed prior to having the bike shipped to me where it was then placed into static display indoors.
It has never been started or ridden since I have owned it. It has never been titled or registered, and is sold with the Ducati Certificate Of Origin For A Vehicle as shown in the photos. It has all of the factory accessories; the titanium rear stand, sponsor decal kit, battery charger, tool kit, all manuals, key card, spare keys, and data analyzer
This particular Ducati D16RR Desmosedici is obviously one for the collectors interested in a museum piece; anyone looking to ride a Desmo can likely find a very nice example for much cheaper than this one is likely to be: recent examples have sold between $40,000-$70,000+, with values varying wildly, naturally depending on mileage and condition. I’m actually curious about how much this Desmo will go for when the hammer drops next week. Although, considering what a prize the seller has, I’m surprised they didn’t invest in some better photography, and maybe a shot of that all-important odometer would have been wise to include.
