If anyone ever doubted it was possible to build a modern sporting motorcycle using Harley Davison DNA, the Buell XB9 series of bikes should have put those concerns to rest. Yes, the engine was still fundamentally heavy, and the five-speed box was more than a bit agricultural, but the bike was packed full of interesting technology. That gas tank? Not a gas tank. Note that it’s clear plastic: it’s actually the airbox cover. The fuel is in the frame rails, the oil is stored in the swingarm, there’s that wild perimeter brake up front, belt final drive, an underslung muffler… The resulting bike wasn’t maybe as light as it ideally could have been, but handling was top-notch, and a raft of hop-up parts meant the 984cc 45° Harley Sportster engine made a claimed 92hp and could rev out to over 7k rpm.

This is a rare opportunity to own a 2005 Buell XB9SX City X with just 3,220 original miles — one of the lowest-mile examples available anywhere. This motorcycle is 100% original (no performance modifications) with two tasteful upgrades: a GPR Steering Stabilizer and factory heated grips.

Condition & History

• Original Owner: Purchased new in 2005, ridden for only about a month before being parked (owner’s wife was expecting and she forbade him from ever riding again).

• Current Owner: Purchased January 2020 with ~600 miles.

• Tires: Brand-new Dunlop Smart tires (with balance beads) installed March 2020 (at 667 miles).

• Mileage Added: Approximately 2,500 miles ridden carefully over several seasons by a 67 year old business executive— never raced or abused.

• Recent Maintenance:

  • Engine isolator mount replaced (Winter 2024)

  • Lithium battery installed (Winter 2024)

• Storage: kept in a climate-controlled workshop in Polk City, FL.

• Condition: Excellent overall, with only one minor cosmetic flaw — a small chip under the front left airbox screw.

I’ve been looking to post one of these Buell XB9s for a while now, and this is one of the nicest, cleanest I’ve come across. The graphics and blue clear plastic parts seen here are definitely not going to be to everyone’s taste, but could easily be changed out for another design if you don’t like them. Obviously, you’d be better off keeping the original parts in a box, rather than just repainting them… I think these are incredibly cool bikes, particularly at this price point: they offer distinctive styling, innovative technology, hooligan personality, race-bred handling, and good reliability, combined with relative ease of maintenance. Seriously, a do-it-all, made-in-America urban sportbike. I’m honestly shocked these remain so cheap, considering the performance and style-per-dollar they offer.
