Bimota has had a long standing history of offering up sublime rocket ships crafted with ingenuity and Italian flair. Throughout the years Bimotas have been powered my many different engine combinations, including all of the Japanese Big Four. Of those, the Yamaha YB series just might be the most interesting on offer, spanning 250cc through 1200cc variants. Today’s Featured Listing is a YB11 Superleggera, the last in the YB line of Bimotas and motivated by Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace power.

In Italian Superleggera literally translates to Super Light – which is pretty descriptive of the YB11. A full 30+ pounds lighter than the Thunderace that donated it’s guts, the YB11 tips the scales at well neigh 400 pounds. And although the YZF1000R mill remains in stock form, Bimota claims the larger airbox (with cold air intake) and modified exhaust provide more than the 145 HP stated by Yamaha. Light weight and big horsepower has always been the recipe for going fast – in a straight line. But if you know anything at all about Bimota, you will know that cornering is where the Rimini madmen excel. Utilizing a stout perimeter frame that efficiently ties in the steering head with the rear swing arm pivot, the aluminum chassis on the YB11 is as beautiful as it is effective. This is actually an evolution of the chassis developed for the YB6, but made more rigid in key locations to aid in stability. Substantial 51mm conventional forks anchor the front end, while a Paioli shock tunes out the bumps fed through the sculpted swing arm.

Thank you for looking at my 1996 Bimota YB11. If you are looking for one in mint condition, that’s completely stock, this is the one. It has less than 2000 original miles, never down, abused, it the rain, cold, pollen you name it. It’s had a very sheltered life in a temperature-controlled garage, hooked up to a battery tender, with Stabil mixed in the fuel. In 1986 Bimota’s were much more than just eye candy, make no mistake the detail along with fit and finish are amazing to look at. However, YB11’s weighed substantially less and produced more power than the Yamaha R1 it’s derived from, making it an all around better performer.

I’m a sixty-year-old collector that is very particular, I’m told that I treat my bikes better than I treat myself. I looked for this one for a long time as I wanted one as close to new as possible. It’s amazing for a thirty-four-year-old bike. The only imperfection anywhere are a couple of very small chips on the left side of the swing are, see pictures. Other than these it’s museum quality, ready to be ridden or collected. If the new owner wanted to ride it I would suggest cleaning the carburetors as even though it has Stabile in the fuel ethanol still gums things up. I would also put on new tires as they are original. Other than that it’s ready to ride, no leaks, issues, fire right up. If it were to be put in a collection, I’d drain the fuel, take out the battery, fog the engine and put it away.

The only reason I’m selling it is over time I find myself only riding on the track, rarely on the street. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have. As I’m thinning the herd I am not interested in any trades. Scott

Detail accents abound on this bike. Stare at any one picture long enough, and you will start to see what I mean. The frame side plates are CNC milled in a jeweled fashion. Cap screws replace traditional fasteners and provide an upscale appearance. The rear wheel adjuster is a classic slider, but implemented so cleanly that it is noteworthy. The carbon accents on the fork mesh nicely with the carbon front mudguard, which contains aerodynamic elements to aid in brake cooling. And all this is with the bodywork on. Undress a Bimota and be prepared to be amazed by the concept of mass centralization and packaging.

Yamaha-powered Bimotas are currently the bargain of the hand built exclusive super bike set. These bikes offer bulletproof Yamaha 20-valve motors and transmissions, exquisite handling thanks to light weight, good suspension and top-shelf Brembos, and the cachet of exclusivity that comes from being only 1 of 600-ish examples ever made worldwide. This particular YB11 SuperLeggera shows less than 2,000 miles and looks absolutely top-notch. The pricing is right in the ballpark for YB11s, if not a tad low for the condition and miles. Check it out, and then give Scott a shout – with Bimota being acquired by Kawasaki these amazing Yamaha-powered models are likely to never come around again. Good Luck!!

Thunder Ace! 1996 Yamaha YZF1000R in AUS

Here is one we haven’t had on RSBFS since 2008, a Yamaha YZF1000R which is also known as the ThunderAce.

The introduction of the Honda CBR900RR/Fireblade pretty much made every other 1000cc+ sporbike  look over-sized and overweight.  The major Japanese manufacturers quickly recognized that the Fireblade required a response but each responded in a different way;  Kawasaki marketed their 750cc ZX7 and ZX7R based championship pedigree while beginning to follow Honda into the 900cc segment (eventually producing the ZX9) while Suzuki focused on creating an ultra-light GSX-750R. As for Yamaha, the company was in the middle of a major restructuring and didn’t have a comparable bike in the pipeline. Yamaha instead did a bit of “tinkering” and in 1996 brought out the YZF1000/ThunderAce.

The YZF1000/ThunderAce took the 145 bhp four-cylinder engine from the FZR1000 and slotted it into a modifed YZF750R frame. When it was announced in 1995, motorcyclists magazines expressed worry that the YZF 1000 would be a bit of a “parts-bin-special”.  But in typical Yamaha fashion, Yamaha took the existing bits and tweaked them while offering some nice new goodies in the package.  The ThunderAce came with a re-tuned engine to improve mid-range power with the result being usable power from as low as 2000 rpm and additional thrust which increased incredibly quickly as the revs climbed.

As the reviews at motorcyclist.com wrote,

“At 3500 rpm it gets serious, and by 5000 the big Yamaha launches you into orbit, pulling cleanly with seamless, linear power all the way up to its 11,500 rpm redline.  Carburation is good with no flat spots or hesitation.  The bike launches you down the road showing 70 mph in first gear and 100 mph in second….Keep on redlining it in each of the gears and you’ll find yourself heading for what feels like a world land speed record with an indicated 170 mph showing on the dials flat out in top gear.”

Yamaha also equipped the ThunderAce with some comfort oriented features that the CBR900RR/Fireblade didn’t have, including a much better pillion/passenger seat setup than the Fireblade, a larger fairing that offered better wind protection/comfort on long rides, comprehensive instrumentation and plenty of luggage mounting points.  The ThunderAce also marked the first appearance of Yamaha’s new four-piston brake calipers, which make other bikes six-piston designs look out of date

Note:  The same brake calipers later adorned Yamahas seminal R1, the bike which finally eclipsed the CBR900RR/Fireblade.

This particular ThunderAce is located in Melbourne Australia and shows 38,600 kilometers which translates to about 24,000 miles.

Here is what the seller has to say:

  • starts first time, never dropped or raced
  • 4 small marks on bodywork
  • a small 1 cm piece of the pillion seat is torn but an easy fix,
  • over all bike is very good condition but has been sitting for a long time

While the condition isn’t perfect I don’t see any evidence of major damage or modifications.  Minor changes seem to be mostly cosmetic; a possibly trimmed license plate holder, an aftermarket windscreen and a tank scratch protector.

So now we come to the question of whether this ThunderAcee is worth the $3,100 AUD/$2,500 USD asking price.    Since the bike has been parked for a while, fresh fluids and rubber would probably be required and this cost should be considered.   Also, while the YZF1000 meets the rare sportbike criteria of not selling in huge numbers, it doesn’t really have any tech or racing pedigree or other factor that could causes a major appreciation in value “down the road” for a collector.  On the other hand, you never really know which bikes will suddenly become the hot collectible…and this is a 1996 model which was the first year of the ThunderAce and first or last year bikes are typically the ones that collectors crave.

So to put it simply its a bit rare and needs a bit of work/money invested.  Personally I think this is a great opportunity for someone to get a a good all around 1000cc sportbike that they could enjoy and still stand out at their local bike night.

1997 Yamaha YZF1000R Thunder Ace With 6,000 Original Miles

This is a very nice Thunder Ace with low miles!  Located in Yorktown, Virgina is a 1997 Yamaha YZF1000R Thunder Ace with 5,698 original miles.  I’m very excited to post my first Thunder Ace and one of the best examples I’ve seen!  These bikes weren’t all that popular but they also wern’t all that rare either.  Yamaha tried to sell as many as they could but these came out among stiff competition from Honda and Kawasaki while Suzuki didn’t release what many consider the ultimate top speed bike until 1999.  When released, the YZF1000R had the lowest drag coefficient of an Yamaha production bike at 0.29.  The YZF has a five valve head, DOHC, inline four, 38mm Mikuni carbs, front & rear adjustable suspension with conventional forks in front and a chassis adapted from the YZF750R.  The YZF is probably my favorite bike to come out of the late nineties speed wars.  The two big names from the speed wars seem to have garnered their own cult following with the GSX-R having all the custom attention and the Super Blackbird taking on the techie crowd.  The Ninja and the YZF remain the obscure, real world bikes that you may only see in passing on the back-roads going the opposite direction.  This YZF looks stunning in it’s original Red/White/Black paint scheme.  The seller doesn’t state much other than that the bike has been well taken care of and that this would make a “Great starter bike.”…Err, I’m going to have to disagree with that last statement.  The price is a very agreeable, and correct, $3,500.  If you’re looking for a fantastic sports touring bike that also looks to be in fantastic condition, have a look at this Thunder Ace on Craigslist here.

This 1997 YB11 Superleggera has a Clean Title in hand and has never been wrecked or dropped. It has a few small scratches and is 7 or 8 out of 10. This bike is Rare, Red, (Superlight) and in great runing shape. It has 11,050 original Miles. It has a new Battery (purchased 2 months ago and is on a tender), just changed oil (2nd time with only putting 150 miles since purchased two years ago) This Bike has a 1000cc Yamaha YZF1000R engine from the factory with over 150hp and has a dry weight of 403.4 pounds. When it was purchased it came with many upgrades and has a box of stock parts. I owned two other bikes (which I’ve sold) that I rode more often and didnt ride this one for that reason.

Phil knows far more about these bikes than I do, so hopefully he’ll give us some background on this model. From my limited perspective, $5800 sounds like a great deal on an exotic you can actually ride and enjoy. Not to mention I have a strange weakness for the Thunderace and with it’s motor in this chassis, I’m especially intrigued.

Someone help this guy stay in his house and take the Bimota off his hands!

Yamaha Thunderace Market Update

After spotting the Yamaha YZF1000R for sale right here in town, I got curious about how rare this model is today. Turns out, I can’t find many available to evaluate! The few I spotted were actually outdated ads that had sold already. Most were a bit cheaper, but not by a great deal.

I guess what makes me believe that I could even contemplate a bike like this is that I have a very vivid recollection of riding shotgun back in college on my buddy Jay Johansen’s CBR1000F. While it was exhilarating, it certainly didn’t seem like the crazy, uncontrollable power that the CBR’s 135hp would suggest. Although this could be due to the additional weight: the CBR1000F weighs in at over 500 pounds, while the Yamaha tips the scale at 430 pounds. And the Thunderace certainly has more sporting intentions with more aggressive stance, bodywork, and another 10hp. But in conservative hands, surely it couldn’t be too much right? Maybe it is. Here’s a quote from Nigel Wines writing for Motorcycle.com on the YZF1000R:

The YZF1000 is a bike that only skilled, competent, experienced riders can enjoy — anything less, and you’ll just scare yourself silly. Or worse. If you haven’t got experience on big bikes and raced a bit, go for something else.

Well that pretty much rules me out as I’m only qualified to drive Miss Daisy compared to most sport riders. Or maybe that ride 15 years ago, when I was pretty young and naive, was faster than I recall.

Even though the motor is a bit outdated in this bike, basically lifted from the FZR1000, it is a 5 valve per cylinder, EXUP equipped, Yamaha motor. And damn they’re sharp looking motorcycles. I’ve been right-clicking-save-as like a madman on these articles!

Surfing the Local CL ads: 1997 Yamaha YZR1000R Thunderace For Sale

Here’s another open class bike that caught my attention recently while surfing the local Craigslist motorcycle section – a cherry 1997 Yamaha YZR1000R Thunderace in black and gray. This one has 26k miles and is listed for $5800:

Tuned (including having cams ‘degreed’) by Eric Dorn at EDR Performance, full Akropovic Titanium exhaust, K&N air filter, HeliBars, Attack rear sets, steel front brake lines, smoke windscreen, nearly new Pilot Power tires
I know of no maintenance issues with this bike. It is ready to ride.

$5800 sounds a bit lofty for this under appreciated bike, especially with such mileage. Not saying the bike is in jeopardy as a result of mileage, but at this price, I’d expect a lot less. The images sure do represent a well look after example though. I’ll do some research to find out for sure like I did on the CBR900RR entries I posted recently.

After my ride to the Olympic Peninsula this past summer, I’ve been contemplating a more appropriate touring machine. The Ducati made the trip fine, but I felt terrible as it sat in the pouring rain overnight. While all it would’ve needed was a decent cover to avoid being totally neglectful, it got me to thinking about what a better mount might of looked like for such a task. Something tells me a bike like this with proper luggage might fit the bill and then some!
