Thump Supporter – 1986 Yamaha SRX 600

From the cheaper seats – but no less fun – comes a bit of a unicorn in the UJM world, the Yamaha SRX 600. Emulating a British single by heritage, offering Japanese performance and technology by design, and providing impossible fun in a narrow and lightweight package, the SRX was gone before we knew it. It turns out the buying public wanted Ninjas and Interceptors during the sport bike arms race of the mid 1980s, not English throwback bikes. But the ensuing years have been kind to the design and philosophy behind the joy of riding a slower bike fast, and the ultra-narrow and nimble single cylinder 600cc thumper ensures a bucket full of torque with which to play. Today these are relatively rare machines, but do not command the premium we come to expect with collector bikes.

The inception of the SRX 600 dates back to the XT600 – the dual purpose do everything bike in Yamaha’s lineup. With 4 valves per cylinder to aid in breathing and air cooling to keep things simple and light, the thumper in the SRX was good for approximately 45 horsepower with a redline of 7,000 RPM. That is not a whole lotta get up and go, but the dry weight of the SRX was down in the 350 pound range, making the bike very agile and easy to ride. The SRX makes due with a lighter flywheel to make it more responsive, as well as something that most modern riders have never used, let alone seen on the street: a kick starter (as in the starting device, not the new product investment website). That’s right kiddies, this one lunger is so throwback that it only offers kick starting. Now, foot bumping a big single four stroke can be daunting, but Yamaha did include an automatic decompression device to make things a little easier. Still, when the seller notes that this bike can be difficult to start the lack of an electric starter only complicates matters a bit.

Nice low mile original bike except for supertrapp and air filter pods. Physically very nice for its age.

Needs tuning. A bitch to start but when it does fire up sounds incredible. Could be an altitude issue (I’m at 7000 feet) or simply timing or it doesn’t like the pod filters(I heard the best set up is stock). I recently acquired the bike and it sat for years. I bought a stock airbox since the original was cut and it’s included.

Fresh oil and filter, the tank is pristine inside, new petcock and fuel lines and rebuilt carb.
Brakes all work and have fresh fluid. Fork seals do not leak (yet!).

A nice example that just a needs a bit more tweaking and I just need the space for another bike that’s on its way plus I’m a bit of a big guy for this machine. Tires have plenty of tread but are old. Comes with original brochure and model kit. Clear title in my name located in Santa Fe NM USA

To answer a few questions: battery is new. Not sure why starting is difficult but from my experience on past bikes it could be a carb setting, timing issue or valve adjust. When it runs it’s on the rich side occasionally backfired so could be that the pilot air is still dirty but I’m very thorough when I clean. The bike has the original owners manual. Physically you’d be hard pressed to find another in such good physical shape. I’m 57 and done kicking bikes, my knees are already messed up so I can’t keep trouble shooting. It may run better at your altitude. I’d put the original airbox back on as most seem to support that it runs best stock.

The 600cc version of the SRX was a one year only bike in the United States (it lasted until the end of the decade in Europe). The buying public wanted sport bikes, and this would be soundly beaten by any of the 500cc or 550cc offerings from that category in the day. These bikes are getting harder to find in decent condition, which makes it RSBFS worthy. The Supertrapp muffler is a decent performance mod, and likely helps the big single from sounding like yet another suburban lawnmower, however the cut airbox and question about jetting definitely exacerbates the kick start issue. The bidding is in the basement at the moment, with the high bid under the $1,500 mark. Depending upon where this ends, this could be a ton of fun (and actually do the ton – barely) for not much cash. Super Rare & Single: 1986 Yamaha SRX600

In the world of Yamaha, this is not really a sport bike. It is not mega powerful. It does nothing extraordinary. Yet somehow the SRX – this retro British single – is a lost gem in the models offered by the Yamaha Motor Co. Lightweight, impossibly narrow, and ultimately flickable, the SRX represents all the elements that make motorcycling FUN, without the unnecessary baggage of plastic bodywork, extreme riding position or uncontrollable horsepower.

In the US, the SRX came in two sizes: small (250cc) and large (600cc). We seem to be able to the find the 250 models much more readily than the bigger bike, which does make some sense; the 250 was viewed as an entry level machine, whereas more experienced riders were looking for bigger bore multis and the like. Thus the 250 was relatively popular, while the 600 gained a quiet, but ardent following.

Open to offers, Im negotiable. . 1986 Yamaha SRX600S (not SC), bored out to 635cc, new valve seats, guides, seals machine work performed by Boyko Racing in October 2021 (https://boykoracing.com/). So it is practically a new engine with 0 miles on it. Clean and clear title. US production model purchased February 2003. VIN JYA2EF003GA000247. 10,503 miles and does not have the “5th gear” characteristics. Never raced. If you are familiar with these bikes, you know how hard these are to find, and find a good example. These were only available in the U.S. in 1986 only and are Kick-start only. In the picture, fuel tank is from a 1991 European Spec model. Original tank is included in this auction. Today’s example is not exactly stock. The seller has put a lot of work into modernizing and upgrading the basic package. That includes a bigger bore on the single slug, along with some head work. Intake and exhaust are both updated, as are the cosmetics. But rather go big and gaudy, this SRX still retains a lot of the basic feel that was the SRX. Think of it as an SRX+. Regardless, if you are in the market for the rare, one-year-only bigger capacity SRX, you could be looking a long time to find one in this condition. Salt Lake Slab Side – 1986 Suzuki GSX-R1100

In a bit of reverse mission creep, Suzuki began work on the GSX-R1100R by seeing how similar it could be to their winning 750. The air/oil-cooled machine achieved great power-to-weight and many long burnouts along the way.

Suzuki’s 1056cc four uses a two-chamber oil pump with the high pressure side going to the engine, and hot oil coming back from the heads is pumped to the oil cooler by the low pressure side.  The system helps the 125 hp engine stay alive without the complication of water cooling.  The all-alloy chassis is a twin spar, with Full Floater rear monoshock and an electrically activated anti-dive system up front.  Even with full fuel the open class GSX-R stays under 500 lbs, making the back pad on the rider’s seat more than an afterthought.

Offered by a Utah collector but not Gary, this GSX-R has a few mods but rather low miles at 9,600.  The Yoshimura-developed NACA ducts are period-correct but beg for the companion airbox, however the owner is using individual K&N filters.  The Supertrapp muffler looks small but can be adjusted for street or strip.  The deal evidently includes a tank protector and rare fairing bra from the way-back machine.  Notes from the eBay auction:

K &N filters and Supertrapp exhaust  makes a great sound , Yoshimura air ducts, 1986 was the first generation GSX-R1100.  Two plastic repairs one in the front fairing left by the windshield very common and in the low fairing right side a little crack was repaired look perfect.  Rest of the panels are original untouched, gas tank is very clean in and out, leather covers are included for gas tank and front fairing very rare.
Very strong engine and fast, runs smooth and steady, beautiful machine.
No noises or smog, fresh oil and new battery, Dunlop tires have plenty of life left.

The GSX-R1100 advertised its business with a tach that started at 3,000 rpm and had the handling to back it up.  The sub-11 second quarter removed any doubt.  Not babied but seemingly not abused, this example could be an exclamation point or the start of a beautiful friendship…

Strange Pursuit – 1991 Buell RS1200

Early on at Buell, Erik was transitioning to road machines, lining up dealers, arranging drive-trains with Harley, and a couple of hundred was a successful model.  A break in the weather ( or maybe the no-reserve auction ) has generated some interest in this low-mile RS1200.

The RS1200 is based on the Battletwin and used the big Sporty V-twin.  Early Buell concepts like the uniplanar engine mounts, underslung pull-shock and mass-centralizing Supertrapp exhaust are on display, but later fuel and oil tank ideas and ZTL brakes were still a gleam in the founder’s eye.  The bike also has anti-dive Marzocchi forks, house-designed alloy wheels, and a racy but peculiar pillion seat, which contained the passenger in response to the torque of the 4-speed Screamin’ Eagle 1200.

With under 12,000 miles, this Buell is in between regular riders, but the Kansas owner has had it tuned up and save a spring for the rear brake ( pedal return ? ) gives it a clean bill of health.  Corbin could do a quick re-cover on the seat and a day at the spa would do the pearl white body a world of good.

Selling my RS1200 Buell. 1991 model. Early Buell. About only 200 of these RS models were ever made. Clear and open Kansas title In hand. 

Just under 12k miles on it. Runs and rides excellent. Brand new tune up, battery etc. 
I have a video of it running if you wish. Send me your email address and I can email it to you. 
All the lights and horns and dash lights work as needed. Only thing I see it needs it spring is loose on rear brake and never took time to fix it up so it’s not working. Front brake works perfect. Tires are good.
The paint and fiberglass work is in pretty good shape. This is a fairly rare and desired Buell.

Pre-dating H-D’s financial interest in the company, the RS1200 was substantially hand-built and the short chassis got high marks for sharp handling.  Also the fairing, expansive enough to protect a full-size rider in the RS’s relaxed riding position.  The MSRP was $15K, quite a number in 1991, and bidding is surprisingly active for an auction with six days to run, but a no-reserve auction can excite.  As can a January thaw’s promise of spring, and thoughts of a flat Kansas two-lane and a bargain on a big loud 1200…

1990 Yamaha FZR400 With 1,830 Original Miles

This is a FZR400 with very low, original, miles!  Located in Long Beach, California is a 1990 Yamaha FZR400 with 1,830 original miles.  The bike does have a Supertrapp exhaust and is jetted to match.  This bike is also priced at an agreeable $3,785–about $1,000 more than the majority of them are advertised for.  The seller mentions that this bike is in perfect condition.  As the seller states, these were only imported into the U.S. for three years (’88-’90) and 1990 is the most desirable year.  The ’90 model features a Deltabox swingarm, four piston calipers and offset front rotors up front.  These 400’s are great handling bikes–just ask Doug–and it’s very cool to see one with very low miles available.  See the bike on Craigslist here.
