Taking Italian suspension, style and bespoke build quality know-how and shoving it full of deadnuts-reliable and prodigious power from the other side of the Atlantic, or in this case the Pacific, is a time-honored tradition. In the ’60s, the likes of Bizzarrini and Iso executed the formula to devastating effect in cars. But Bimota ported the practice over to bikes with racing success to back it up.

In this case, the Italians hung a handbuilt frame and handmade carbon fiber bodywork around a Suzuki TL1000R engine, then threw Paioli springy bits at it to give it Bimota’s signature refinement. Before they were done, Bimota tweaked the big v-twin to push out just south of 140 horsepower at the crank. The result was a piece of industrial art that was made for race tracks but was almost too pretty to ride in anger.

This one, located at Speedart in Miami, Florida, has covered just 5,100 miles, and has been kept the way you’d expect for a collector’s piece of this caliber. There isn’t a surface on it that you’d be scared to eat off of. This one has a Power Commander III that was added by the second owner, which after a tune settled down some of the fueling issues these bikes can have thanks to those massive throttle bodies. It also wears a very stylish Arrow exhaust.

The name Bimota is derived from the first two letters of the names of the three founders, Bianchi, Morri, and Tamburini.

Massimo Tamburini crashed his Honda 750 at the Misano race course in 1972, breaking three ribs. Finding himself with time on his hands while recovering, he designed and constructed a tubular steel frame that would eliminate the flex and handling problems that plagued the high horsepower machines of all the large Japanese manufacturers. Bimota’s first model, the HB1, was the result of his work and vision.

Only ten of them were produced, starting when the company was formed in 1973. In the early years Bimota produced mainly racing frames, then began manufacturing complete high performance machines as well as ones in “kit” form. When the now legendary KB1 was developed, the company was assured of commercial success. Bimota continued to be at the very leading edge of extremely high performance motorcycle design throughout the 80’s, 90’s and into the new millennia on both the track and the street.

Now more than forty five years after the firm’s founding, Bimotas of any era are sought after throughout the world because of their beauty, technological superiority and exclusivity.

The SB8R was the first production bike to use carbon fibre in the frame. There is plenty more additional carbon fibre elements, including the unusual but effective air intake system integrated into the front fairing, tail assembly and more. Bimota used engines from other manufacturers and constructed their own frame and body work to give it less weight and improved handling over the “donor bike”.

The Bimota SB8R uses a Suzuki TL-1000 motor, with Bimota’s own fuel and exhuast system that resulted in 135 hp. The motor and special designed rear suspension give the bike perfect balance resulting in a machine that is a joy to ride.

Even though the SB8R was designed for the track, most owners (true in the case of this motorbike), used them sparingly, riding on nice days, and the occasional bike show. This Bimota has only 5,100 miles after 16 years of ownership.

From the total of 150 hand-built examples spanning a two year period only 69 SB8Rs were exported into the US. It is questionable of how many are still in this pristine and original condition. Upon a closer examination it is easy to attest to the claims that it’s never been tipped over or any evidence of track time.

Speedart Motorsports is pleased to present this time capsule original SB8R in the configuration it left the factory in Rimini with a couple of small modifications in order to improve the ownership experience.

The light switch was modified so the headlight can be turned off, foot-pegs were replaced with European fixed position pegs, and the fueling system was modified to make it more rideable in street configuration.The fairings have original paint, carbon fiber parts have no cracks, all lights, turn-signals are original and working, tires have little wear, although they are at least 2 years old, so may want to consider replacing.Shocks don’t show signs of needing seals, engine has no leaks, runs great, once it warms up (these are cold-blooded beasts). Brakes have plenty of wear left, recommend oil change for the engine, something I intended to do, but haven’t made time.

This bike was purchased new from Ducati Bellevue on 3/2/2002. The 1st owner was a local Seattle aerospace engineer who rarely rode the bike. The last owner purchased the bike on 2015 prior to Speedart Motorsports acquiring the Bimota.

The 1st owner made only one modification to this machine. His one mod was having a custom fuel trimmer or potentiometer made to work with the existing wiring harness. These bikes were known to have fueling issues due to the massive throttle bodies and this is where the potentiometer helps out. Unfortunately the potentiometer is old technology and the adjustment range was limited. The second owner installed a PCIII that was tuned by Nels at 2 Wheel Dyno Works in Woodinville, WA.

PCIII was installed by second owner to permanently wash out some of the fueling issues that was typical of the SB8R model and its huge throttle bodies. This bike accelerates easier through the rev range than before. The fuel trimmer that had been installed by the first owner was only finite and could not adjust or reach some of these issues in the rev range. This modification alone makes it rideable even in heavy traffic.

As previously mentioned, the first owner added an out-of-production Evoluzione SB8R fuel trimmer provided by a Bimota enthusiast in Colorado. This unit is more precisely calibrated with nearly infinite settings between 0 and 999. The Bimota trimmer has 8 positions total.

The Arrow exhaust on the bike has been cored for better performance and sound. The result is outstanding in that it essentially replicates full racing pipes with much better performance and sound.

The stock tank on these SB8R’s is an Acerbis tank. The tank that’s currently installed on the bike was sealed and lined by Russ Foy in late 2014 to prevent any tank expansion. Furthermore braided steel clutch and brake lines were fitted in lieu of the stock rubber.

The sale of this race bred super bike is accompanied by owner manuals, service books and two keys.

The fortunate new owner will receive a galore of unobtainium spare parts worth thousands of dollars and who are no longer available. Such spares include, composite full fairing skins that can be painted with the desired livery suitable for racing, extra monoposto seat, additional OEM Acerbis Tank, OEM full exhaust system with silencers, lithium battery charger, rear pit stand and more, making this acquisition the ultimate SB8R package.

Japanese Thunder: 2000 Suzuki TL1000R for Sale

The Suzuki TL1000R was famously underwhelming when released. It was a bit too fat, didn’t handle as brilliantly as the Italian competition, and while it looked appropriately Suzuki-ish, styling wasn’t considered a high point. Sort of like the designers were watching a lot of platypus porn while they were styling the bike… In fact, all of the would-be Ducati challengers basically fizzled, but several, including the Honda RC51 and the TL1000R, have since managed to become cult-classics. It certainly helped that their used values cratered, with lower prices making their flaws much easier to forgive.

Aside from the TL-R’s styling, which is always subjective, the biggest issue was handling. V-twins always present particular packaging challenges, particularly the transversely-mounted designs usually used in modern sportbikes. Obviously, a Harley-esque 45° angle between the cylinders is great for packaging in terms of length and width, if not height. But they vibrate like crazy at revs. Unless you want to add balance-shafts, a 90° twin is your best bet, but then the issue is the bike’s wheelbase: use an “L-twin” like Ducati and long swingarm for maximum traction, and the machine ends up with an unfeasibly long wheelbase. Rotate the engine backwards in the chassis to keep it shorter front-to-back, and you limit room for a rear suspension.

Suzuki went the second route, and got around space limitations by using an unusual rotary damper instead of a traditional linear unit. The concept is proven, but Suzuki’s unit was too small for the application and overheated under hard use. Strangely, aftermarket linear units from Penske and others can be swapped in with adapter kits, and Bimota used Suzuki’s v-twin in their SB8R, fitted alongside the heads and operated via a linkage, so the rotary damper was clearly a bit of a gimmick that backfired.

Handling issues aside, the TL-R was powered by a peach of an engine, a 996cc v-twin with liquid-cooling, four-valve heads, and 135hp. That engine, along with the six-speed box, could be found in a number of bikes from other manufacturers that lacked the resourced to develop their own. Away from the utterly ruthless nit-picking and hype surrounding them when new, odd-duck bikes like the TL1000R can now be appreciated on their own merits. All of the Suzuki’s flaws can be mitigated, or you can just enjoy it for what it is: a booming, easy-to-own supberbike at a bargain price.

Selling my Suzuki TL1000R, needs nothing, I was going to use it for track but change of plans. Bike has 15k miles, new tires, new brakes, rebuilt front forks, new fluid, flush brake fluid, coolant, fresh oil and filter change, new engine air filter, new spark plugs, rebuild clutch slave master cylinder, dual Yoshimura slip-ons and power commander, bike needs nothing and is road ready. I have the title.

Nothing flashy here, just a decent, well-maintained and largely stock bike, although the seller doesn’t mention whether the original tail section and passenger pegs are available. Miles are reasonable, and the upgraded Yoshi exhaust and PC setup is almost mandatory, since the Suzuki twin sounds great when allowed to breathe: deep and rumbly, without the additional layers of clutch and valvetrain noise of a Ducati. The $4,750 Buy It Now isn’t the cheapest we’ve seen, and suggests values continue to creep up, but that still represents a great deal for a very capable v-twin superbike. Just save up for a conventional shock conversion and ride this till the wheels come off!

The masters from Rimini were on a roll: From the tube-framed madness from the cusp of the 1980s to the aluminum beams as the 1990s approached, Bimota has always been in the frame game. But unlike many bespoke frame makers who concentrated only on the chassis, these Italian artists disguised as motorcycle makers ensured that their bikes handled the stage of the visceral world as well as the paved one. As such, Bimotas continue to delight with their strong visual presence, coupled with legendary handling and performance. All of this comes at a price, however – making riding a Bimota a relatively exclusive affair.

Introduced in the years following the V-Due debacle, the SB8R returned to Bimota’s more successful business plan of stuffing a 3rd-party engine and transmission into a motorcycle of their own design. In this case, power is courtesy of Suzuki’s ripping TL1000R v-twin. This Japanese homage to Ducati’s 916 mill is well known for being potent across the entire face of the tach, excelling at a high RPM rush not unlike that of inline fours. Devoid of the rest of the TL package (including the funky rotary damper), Bimota engineered a beast of a bike that was lighter and more precise than the Suzuki that donated its guts. It also looked far less porky then the Japanese offering.

Always assembled with top-shelf suspension and brakes – Paioli and Brembo in this case – the SB8R reeks of class. From the huge snorkels that force-feed the air box hiding under the tank cover (the actual tank is the back half of that structure and extends downward centering/lowering the mass), to the way the huge exhaust cans poke out of the back seat, to the carbon-composite join plates of the frame to the exquisite swingarm with the embossed logo, everything looks expensive – and indeed it was a far more expensive motorcycle than its Japanese counterpart when new.

This particular bike looks to be in nice shape. With only 5,000 miles under the wheels, it has a reasonable number of miles and has been ridden without having been used/abused/trashed. There is plenty of evidence to know that the TL platform holds up well, making this one barely broken in. The haters will comment on the picture quality which makes it difficult to tell if we are looking at reflection or imperfection in the bodywork, but what we can see looks good. The seller appears to be knowledgeable about the machine and has 100% positive feedback, so I’m sure questions posed by serious buyers would be answered to satisfaction. With an opening ask of only $5,000, this Bimota is starting this auction in the basement. Interested parties should get in on the action now. This is the TL that Suzuki should have made; we’re just lucky that the boys from Rimini were still around to give the TL motor some love. Future Classic: Clean, Low-Mileage 2001 Suzuki TL1000R for Sale

Look, here’s the thing. If you’re buying bikes [or cars, for that matter] that were hyped to be “instant classics” when they were introduced, thinking you can flip them for a profit… You may be waiting a while. Consider all the folks who bought the MV Agusta F4 750 Serie Oro when it was new, hoping it would be a valuable investment. That was almost twenty years ago and those are still selling at a significant discount, especially when you factor in inflation… So if you’re trying to buy low and sell high, you need to to look around the fringes, find the slightly forgotten and overlooked bikes. Maybe bikes that got universally blah reviews and didn’t sell all that well when new, but have strong performance, distinctive character and, if possible, a face only a mother could love. Something like this very low-mileage, banana-yellow Suzuki TL1000R.

When introduced, pretty much every review I read of the TL1000R was damning with faint praise. Billed as a “Ducati killer” it was too heavy, handling from the still-rotary-damped-dammit-Suzuki-stop-being-stubborn suspension wasn’t as good as the 996, and styling was… odd. Sort of like the designers looked to the animal kingdom for styling inspiration, and found… the platyus. Still, the 996cc motor was a excellent, and made plenty of power with the fat midrange for which v-twins are justifiably famous.

See, when they’re new, bikes get reviewed in context. But decades later, they get to stand on their own merits, without being compared unfairly to the bikes they were supposed to outperform. I’m joking a bit, but it’s true: reading some magazine comparison tests, you get a sense that “if you ain’t first, you’re last” and I think many very competent sportbikes have been unfairly overlooked because they made a couple horsepower less than the class leaders, had questionable styling, or had handling that tried to kill their riders.

The TL1000R looks oddly bulbous, but it makes a great road bike, and a set of aftermarket cans like the Yoshimura bits seen here liberate some pretty great v-twin throb. The 135hp won’t see you winning any stoplight races against newer tackle, but if you can’t have fun with that much power on road or track, maybe you should choose a different hobby. The package was high-performance enough for Bimota to use in their SB8R, and Performance Bikes did a series a while back, turning a nice TL-R into a literal Ducati-killer with a wild big-bore engine build, new gearbox, and lightweight bodywork.

Significant upgrades to the power might be elusive or at least expensive for those of us without engine building friends or contacts with the gearbox specialists at Nova Racing, but fit some carbon panels and maybe a slimmer solo tail, change out the rotary damper at the rear for a more conventional unit, swap in a later GSX-R1000 front end for better forks and brakes, and you might be surprised at how much fun you can have on this affordable, reliable, easy-to-maintain v-twin sportbike.

It’s time to scoot your computer chair a little closer to the screen….. grab your reading glasses and prepare to view the cleanest Suzuki TL1000R on planet earth!!  This is no exaggeration, view any of the provided photo’s below and you will see what I mean.  This bike was purchased brand new in 2003 by an elderly car / motorcycle collector and parked inside a carpeted and climate controlled garage it’s entire life.  This bike has NEVER seen a race track and has never been ridden past 8,000RPM’s, ever.  This is the most babied and well taken care of example you’ll ever see, anywhere.  Literally looks like it just rolled off the showroom floor – as the photo’s clearly show.

If you’re a true motorcycle enthusiast, this particular bike will bend you at the knee’s.  With with only 2,583 ORIGINAL MILES, it’s probably the lowest mileage TL left in existence too.  Look anywhere you can think of…… Cycle Trader, Craigslist, Ebay, Offer up, or anywhere else you can think of and you will see how rare these bikes truly are.  Most of them have been highly modified, raced or stunted and abused.  Primarily because they are so well built and tough – they can handle the abuse of people beating the hell out of them.  As sad as that sounds, you will have nothing to worry about in that department with this bike.  Look over all of the provided photo’s in detail and you will see what I mean.  This is the closest you will ever get to showroom perfect as they come.  And SURELY the cleanest 2001 TL1000R on the market – anywhere. Hands down… Guaranteed!!  You absolutely WILL N O T find a cleaner TL anywhere.  This bike is SO clean you could eat your steak dinner right off the engine.  I have provided close up images showing the inner wheel hubs, the engine cases, coolant lines, chain, seats, trunk, dash, brake levers, shocks……. everything you would hope to see if you were buying a bike.  Look closely at the images provided and you will see what I mean.  Being garaged and covered it’s entire life, there is no rust, no corrosion and no discoloration from road grime or road salt etc.  This bike looks just as clean underneath and inside the fairings as it does on the outside.  The paint condition and quality is (literally) like new.  No pit marks or chips on the front end and no (dirty rag) swirls or marks on the body.  As I said – this truly is the cleanest one you will ever find.  This bike is so clean it could be parked on the showroom floor at a Suzuki dealership on a display stand just to show it off.  Unsuspecting customers would mistake it for a brand new bike……. it’s THAT clean!! 

Although there are no internal motor modifications, there are a few bolt on upgrades:
– Dealer Installed Yoshimura RS-3 polished slip on dual exhaust
– Dealer Installed power commander
– Custom rear fender painted to match
– Carbon fiber brake & clutch levers
– Zero gravity smoke tinted windscreen
– Smoke tinted flush mount turn signals
– Smoke tinted rear tail light lens
– Brand new front & rear tires (just installed 4-18-18)
– Rear under tail fender setup painted to match (never installed)

Being a collector bike, all stock parts were saved, packaged, boxed up and will go to the new owner.  If the new owner would like to put everything back to OEM stock condition, the parts are here and can easily be re-installed.  It comes with the original sales contract when it was purchased new, the original TL1000R owners manual and original TL1000R CD service discs.  It comes with a matching yellow helmet, only worn twice.  There’s a custom motorcycle cover too that will go to the new owner.  It fits the bike like a glove!!  I even saved the original OEM tires that came on the bike when new.  The tires were still in good condition, but I wanted to install brand new one’s for safety.  Not good to ride on old tires in my opinion, so I just had brand new tires installed front & rear.  All of the extra’s that come with the bike are shown below in the photo’s.  
 
Flaws:
As with any pre-owned motorcycle or vehicle, normal signs of wear & tear may be present.  Scratches, nicks, chips, dings etc.  If you have any questions as to the condition of this bike, by all means – bring your mechanic and feel free to inspect it in person prior to bidding or purchase.  The only noted flaw I can find on this entire bike is on the left mid section of the fairing there is a small scratch in the chrome TL-R graphic.  Not even sure how it happened, but it’s about the only noted flaw I can find.  Replacing the TL1000R left side logo sticker would eliminate this completely. Also on the back edge of the left fairing just above the letter “K” where it says SUZUKI there is a small mark.  At one point in the bikes past, the fuel petcock sprung a tiny leak and some gas ran down this specific edge of the fairing which caused the smudge area.  This can most likely be rubbed out or buffed back to yellow with ease.  Also there is a tiny smudge on the back left outer edge of the Yoshimura slip on.  Looks like it was done from shoe rubber.  Will most likely rub off with a bit of effort.  You would have to be sitting on the pavement looking eye level at the side of the bike to notice either of these imperfections.  However, it is Ebay and I value my reputation as a seller so it’s something I wanted to point out. Aside from this, the bike is a close to mint as you will ever find.  This bike looks like it has barely been ridden. 

Obviously, I’m not really suggesting the TL1000R is a great investment opportunity. But they’re surprisingly affordable, offer great everyday performance, and really should increase in value over the next decade or so. Maybe not as obvious: for all the cheap shots I’ve taken at the TL1000R, I like them. This example has seen just 2,600 miles so far, so you can actually do some riding on your duck-billed modern classic and still maybe make a few bucks when the time comes to sell it on to some sucker… err, collector, when values have really spiked down the road and you’re ready to move on to the next forgotten superbike. And before you scoff too loudly, or in print in the comments below, remember that nice, first-generation GSX-R750s have pretty much tripled in price over the past few years. That may not be the reason you buy motorcycles, but it’s nice to know you might at least break even on your weekend toy, after you factor in consumables and a bit of maintenance. The seller didn’t set some wishful-thinking Buy It Now price either: bidding is very active and up to north of $4,000 as I write this.

Seller note: Open to trades, would consider a trade up or trade down on a RC30, RC45, NC35 and possibly an Ow01 or Ow02, already have an NC30 so I’m good there. Yes, I realize the RC’s and OW’s are quite a bit more but if the offer is fair, I’ll make up the difference in cash. Would also consider a Hypermotard (only bike I miss after I sold and want another one soon!). Two nice Bimotas in one week! Today’s SB8R Featured Listing that can also be found on eBay doesn’t bother with a traditional Italian powerplant like the DB2, but does stick with a v-twin, in this case the liquid-cooled, 996cc unit from Suzuki’s TL1000R. The TL-R may have been flawed as a sportbike, but there was surely nothing wrong with that engine, and Suzuki supplied it to Bimota and Cagiva to power their Raptor line as well. The engine was largely stock, although Bimota used different fuel injectors to bump power to a claimed 138hp. It’s reliable, sounds great, and offers up plenty of performance in this lightweight machine.

Styling certainly isn’t as svelte as the Ducatis it was pitched against, but the look is distinctive, with lots of exposed carbon on the bodywork and frame. Of course, that frame really is the centerpiece of any Bimota and the SB8R uses a sophisticated, composite design that uses aluminum spars and carbon fiber side plates, a design inspired by the one found on Cagiva’s Moto GP bike. That curvy tail is made of carbon as well, and is self-supporting. Up front were beefy Paioli forks and a traditional Öhlins rear shock replaced Suzuki’s troublesome rotary rear damper. These components helped shave nearly 50lbs compared to the TL-R and improve both the power-to-weight ratio and handling of the SB8R.

Suzuki donated the headlight and the gauges as well. They don’t look quite as special as you might hope for on a pricey Italian exotic, but they also actually work, something that wasn’t guaranteed on other 1990s Bimotas, so it’s a sensible choice. Those huge carbon intake tubes may hearken back to a late 1980s Kawasaki ZX7, but that beautiful top triple they frame really shows the incredible details found on Bimotas of every era: innovative frames, trick bodywork that removes with just a few fasteners, machined from billet frame parts, footpegs with eccentric adjusters, and top shelf components. If you don’t like what you see at first, just look a little bit closer.

From the Seller: 1999 Bimota SB8R for Sale

This example is number #18 out of 250 ever produced, with just 50 SB8Rs officially imported into the USA.  Hand built Italian super bike weighing in at around 380 lbs dry and 135 HP. This Bimota is truly stunning, especially considering it’s 18 years old!  The red paint is a vibrant red, white is very clean and the carbon work is amazing.  The only imperfections that are all quite minor are the barely functional mirrors (look good for display though) and a tiny little crack in the “carbon tube base” where it meets the fuel tank (I pointed it out in the picture with my finger) but even that would be a very easy touch up, if you even noticed it.
 
The bike is pretty much stock other then a carbon Arrow Exhaust, 6 pot ISR calipers (rebuilt in 2016 with receipt), aftermarket kickstand (stock ones are known to collapse) and adjustable rear sets.  I have the stock exhaust and a few other things in a box.  Bike starts right up as it should with the choke engaged and is currently sitting in our warehouse under a soft cover.  Will need tires pretty quick though if you’re planning to ride.  If you want to fly in and ride it back, I’d be willing to have new tires installed prior to your arrival at your cost of course…the labor would be free though.
 
I’ve been a huge Bimota fan since they first came out but back then they were out of my budget and just a poster bike.  The workmanship with the beautiful gold forks, CNC’d fork legs, carbon fiber frame and beefy swing arm are truly Italian Art.  The reason the SB8R is one of my favorites is that it utilizes the TL1000R motor which means you get the Italian style and an exceptionally easy motor to work on whereas some of the other models are belt driven Ducati’s and much more expensive to keep running.  This is one of the few collector quality motorcycles that you can actually ride.  It’s not a small bike by any means (I suspect it may be large for anyone under about 5’10) but it’s exceptionally well planted on the freeway, excellent torque, fantastic brakes / suspension and much more comfortable then many of my prior bikes.
 
I’ve been shopping for one for years but they were not the condition I was looking for or perhaps I didn’t trust the source.  So why sell after a short stint of ownership?
 
My son had went down on his Daytona 675 last year (see it on my other ebay auction), he’s saved up enough for a new ride so we stopped to see a pretty special bike on the way to Laguna Seca last week.  Turns out, he has my UNICORN of motorcycles…the one bike that I’ve never been able to get my hands on, a beautiful condition RC45!  He also has the CBR400 my son was looking for.  Here’s the catch, he’s getting up there in years and cleaning house.  He will only sell me the RC45 if I take all 7.5 of his bikes (the .5 is a  rolling chassis)…  I’ve never really wanted a large collection, just a handful at the most, not to mention I just picked up some classic sport bikes in the trailing weeks to fix up with my son.  SOOOO.. seeing that I can’t pass up this RC, looks like I’ll be selling some of these others once I get through all the paperwork and figure out what I want to keep (tough life I know…HAHA).
 
Bear in mind, I’m not letting the Bimota go for cheap, if it doesn’t find the right owner then I’ll focus on selling some of the others.  Fact is, this SB8R is in such great shape, I feel bad to ride it… just too hard to find bodywork and I’m not the kind of guy that just looks at my bikes. The RC45 comes with 2 set of bodywork which is perfect for taking her out and new skins for showing it off :).

With a starting bid of $8,000 and several days left on the auction, there’s still time to pounce on this bit of Italian exotica, so head on over and bid at eBay if you’re interested! This example has been thoughtfully upgraded with six-pot calipers and a set of classic Arrow cans, as indicated by the seller. There are just over 7,000 miles on the clock, which is low enough for collectors, but not so low you’d be afraid to put on a few more riding your handbuilt superbike.

If simply going fast is your thing, you probably don’t spend much time on this site. You went out and bought a Suzuki GSX-R1000, threw some sticky rubber, rearsets, and a Power Commander on it, then went out to dominate road and track, with stone axe reliability and off-the-shelf parts availability. But in a sea of same, some of us want to have our cake and eat it too, and exotic bikes don’t necessarily have to cost a fortune to buy and own. Bimota’s exotic SB8R generally trades for south of $10,000 and offers up v-twin character and midrange punch, light weight, sophisticated handling, and the reliability of a Suzuki.

Styling is striking, if not actually pretty, and the view from the seat is dominated by those huge carbon intakes that recall the ZX-7R of the late 80s and early 90s. Handling was much improved compared to the TL1000R: it weighed a good bit less than the donor Suzuki and, if nothing else, it replaced the famously troublesome rotary rear damper with a more traditional unit.

The SB8R is surprisingly wide for a twin, but the bulbous fairing at least provides some wind protection but, like all Bimotas, the frame was the real centerpiece of the SB8. In this case, it was a sophisticated variation on the beam frame often used by Japanese superbikes. But here the construction is composite, with aluminum spars and carbon fiber side plates. The tail piece is self-supporting and also made of carbon. If that headlight looks familiar, Bimota wisely cribbed the part for their SB8, along with that very ordinary-looking, but functional dash. Suzuki obviously also lent the bike their eight-valve, liquid-cooled 996cc v-twin engine, modified with different injectors to produce a claimed 138hp, and a real-world 124whp.

Keep in mind that, until World Superbike twins grew to 1200cc and started chasing hp at the expense of the midrange that was previously their forte, 124hp was considered huge power for a twin. Especially when the only traction control was your sensitive right hand…

I hate to let my dream bike go, but I have to do it. It’s got the factory fuel trimmer and full Arrow exhaust. I have the stock mirrors and rear fender/taillight/blinker assembly. I installed a lithium battery less than a year ago. It makes servicing/accessing the battery a TON easier.

As far as Bimotas go, these are pretty common, but that’s not saying very much. The listing is pretty spare, but the photos are good and should give you a pretty good idea of what to expect. Obviously, the engine should be easy to service, but bodywork will be difficult and/or expensive. As always, Bimota experts are welcome to weigh in and point out anything for potential buyers to be aware of but, aside from some slightly faded carbon as you’d expect on a bike this old, everything appears to be in order, or available from the seller. Bidding is very active but currently up to just north of $4,000 with the reserve not met and just a couple days left on the auction.

Given the Bimota SB8R’s exotic reputation, you might be surprised to learn just how affordable they can be. They’re one of the most commonly-seen Bimotas and offer up Ducati noise and performance with looks that you’d never confuse with anything else.

The slightly odd styling certainly matches the exotic brand and the bike uses Suzuki’s own headlight, making it look far better than it ever did in the duck-billed [and tailed] original. Suzuki also donated it’s eight-valve, liquid-cooled 996cc v-twin engine, tweaked here with different injectors to produce a claimed 138hp, and a real-world 124whp. Not impressive compared to 190hp Panigales, but with a huge midrange as opposed to power further up the rev-range, the SB8R will still be plenty fast, especially in real-world conditions.

The heart of any Bimota, ironically, isn’t the heart: with engines sourced from outside manufacturers, and bodywork just a shell, it’s the frames that have always set the company apart, and the one here is a stunner: a composite unit, with aluminum and carbon-fiber elements, along with a self-supporting seat unit. Supposedly inspired by the frame on Cagiva’s Moto GP bike, it helps shave almost 50lbs off Suzuki’s original TL-R while giving a better weight-distribution as well.

A more traditionally configured Ohlins rear standard shock versus the easily-overwhelmed rotary unit matched to a Paioli fork helps give race-ready handling, and the SB8 had some success in World Superbike competition, although they struggled to meet homologation numbers…

The stock Suzuki gauges are a bit of a let-down on such a wild-looking motorcycle, although at least they’re nestled down behind those massive carbon intake tubes and at least they should prove reliable! And the new owner can certainly plump for a nice TransLogic digital dash or something if the standard gauges are too pedestrian…
These exotic machines offer up a bit of a conundrum. They’re race-bred, but you’d be likely to tiptoe your beloved Bimota around the track for fear of a crash. The bodywork was designed to ease access and reduce the costs of a crash but, fifteen years later, panel availability may be a challenge. And even if you’re well-heeled and keep your pride-and-joy rubber-side-down, sometimes the maintenance parts needed to keep extremely low-production motorcycles running just aren’t available, at any price. And if they’re NLA, then you have to find folks to make you one-off parts: gaskets, fork seals…

Emerging from the V-Due induced bankruptcy, Bimota produced a master stroke, a beautifully designed monoposto based on the exciting Suzuki TL-1000 twin.  With only 150 built, they show up on the market with surprising frequency, but an appearance by the big twin is always exciting.

Based on the 996 cc V-twin, Bimota produced their own fuel injection system and exhaust for the engine resulting in 135 hp and 78 ft-lbs. torque.  Some street rideability issues emerged and many SB8R’s have aftermarket controllers fitted.  The chassis is an art piece, twin aluminum spars mated to carbon frame connectors.  The seat sub-frame is also carbon, as are the fenders and fairings.

Suspension front and rear is by Paioli and fully adjustable.  In the braking department, top of the line Brembo 320mm front disks are followed by 220mm rear.  Reviewed as a bit of a hodgepodge, the full fairing has a wide presence for a tandem twin, the Suzuki headlight flanked by large ram-air intakes.  The carbon fiber intake tubes dominate the flight deck, at least until you’re under way.

On display for several years after 8,000 miles, some renovation work has been done, but the bike still needs tires before riding at speed.  Looking good except for a scrape on the right swingarm and a craked left mirror ( might be tricky to replace ).  From the eBay auction:

This Bimota was recently serviced and a new battery installed.  It starts immediately and runs strong, with a very deep & throaty exhaust note.  The cosmetics look good overall, but there is some evidence of minor scratches and flaws (and a crack in one mirror base) that indicate that this bike probably saw some track duty early in its life.   Since this bike has been on static display for some time, the tires should be replaced for safety if it will be ridden regularly.

Bimota’s of any year are exotic and rare, but the later bikes have technology that was leading edge then, merely special and expensive today.   The company had a factory race team in 2000, and Anthony Gobert won the Australian GP after having the bike for only 5 weeks.  Sadly, the sponsorship crumbled and the team folded halfway through the season.  Well-engineered as a make-or-break bike for the new partners, the Bimota SB8R is one of those keeper bikes, but ride it for a bit before you put it on display…
