As the icing on the 1970’s superbike cake, Kawasaki’s KZ1000 built on the 900 Z1’s formidable reputation.  Bob’s Z1R-D1 has quite low miles and a curatorial owner who emphasizes correctness for finishes and mechanical updates.

It’s easy to see the lineage from earlier Kawasaki’s early -70’s four cylinders, even though the factory stylists put a great set of bodywork on the Z1R.  Inside, the 1015cc mill had a heavier crankshaft and the four Mikuni carbs had slightly larger bores.  The new four-into-one exhaust let the 94 horses loose and weighed less too.  Headstock gussets and firmer rear shocks shored up handling, and three big disk brakes – drilled up front – slowed the 18-inch alloys with authority.  The angular café design is resolved from nose to tail and even takes in the rectangular fuel cap.

Look into the background of Bob’s pictures and you’ll see many Z1R’s, other period superbikes, and blue ribbons – as he says, this one won’t disappoint.  The engine and chassis have been given new gaskets and fasteners but keep their original looks.  Period upgrades like V&H exhaust and K&N filters accompany the rebuilt carburetors and new Avon tires.  The silver blue metallic paintwork has been refinished, but is virtually indistinguishable from new.  Some of Bob’s comments from the eBay auction:

I THOROUGHLY INSPECTED AND RE-SEALED THE OUTER COVERS/SEALS AS NECESSARY WITHOUT REPAINTING THE ENGINE SO NO OIL LEAKS ON YOUR CARPET. THE ORIGINAL CARBS WERE ULTRASONICALLY CLEANED AND REBUILT, RE-JETTED, AND SYNCED  WITH ALL NEW SEALS AND GASKETS. THE PERIOD CORRECT VANCE & HINES EXHAUST WAS DISASSEMBLED, STRIPPED AND RE-CHROMED TO BETTER THEN NEW SPECS (NOT AN INEXPENSIVE TASK).
 
THE WHEELS ARE ALL ORIGINAL AND IN PERFECT CONDITION. SHE IS FITTED WITH AVON TIRES “SEMI PERIOD-CORRECT”. THE BRAKES WERE COMPLETELY OVERHAULED. THE SEAT IS A CUSTOM SEAT FROM THE 70’s AND IS IN AMAZING PERFECT CONDITION. THE WINDSCREEN AND SEAL ARE “NOS” AS ARE THE LEVERS AND MORE COMPONENTS THEN I CAN LIST. A NEW RK CHAIN AND SPROCKETS WERE INSTALLED. 
THE FRAME HAS NOT BEEN REPAINTED. THE FRONT FORKS HAVE BEEN REBUILT WITH THE LOWER LEGS PROPERLY REFINISHED TO OEM STANDARDS. THE REAR SHOCKS ARE PERIOD CORRECT PROGRESSIVE UNITS. THE TANK AND SIDE COVER EMBLEMS ARE NEW OLD STOCK. THE ORIGINAL OWNERS MANUAL AND KAWASAKI POUCH ARE INCLUDED. THE BIKE HAS THE ORIGINAL LION HEAD KEY. LIKE ALL MY BIKES THIS WILL BE A BIKE THAT WON’T DISAPPOINT.

The KZ1100 and Z1R went a lot of places, of course it liked a good straightaway and did well at the drag strip.  When race-prepared they were a force in superbike racing – AMA and all over the world.  Compared with its contemporaries, it struggled against newer designs from the other Japanese manufacturers and got gigged for the smallish fuel tank.  But for many owners, the bulletproof mechanicals and sharp fairing give the Z1R a head start.  Bob’s auction has a $12,000 starting bid and buy-it-now of $17,900 and he can be contacted through the eBay auction.

Pugilist: 2003 BMW Boxer Cup

I know there are some RSBFS faithful out there that refuse to believe a BMW can be sporty OR rare. I beg to differ. As such, I offer you this 2003 Boxer Cup machine, created by BMW to capitalize on what was essentially a one-make Battle Of The Twins series. As #172 in a 200-bike limited production, it is justifiably rare – even if this is really an upscale version of the R1100S model. As for the sporting equation, I rely on the likes of Reg Pridmore, Randy Mamola, and Kevin Schwantz to comment; all have been competitors on BMW twins. Sure, at age 77 Reg could probably beat all of us on track even if he were riding a motorized skateboard, but each of these professional riders has shown the possible performance attainable from the bikes out of Bavaria.

With carbon fiber fender and mudguard, a full belly pan, carbon valve covers with cylinder head pucks, twin under-seat exhaust, Ohlins suspension on both ends and a special setup that raises the rear of the bike to aid in cornering clearance, the Replika machine is as sporty as you could get in the BMW world during this time. Evoking the 5 year racing series was a marketing coup for BMW, and with model-specific graphics (including Mamola’s replicated signature on the fairing) this BMW promises to be something different.

This rare bike is amazing to ride! Comfortable, smooth, fast, and people love the timeless design. If you have made it this far into my listing, then I don’t need to write 10 pages explaining the Boxer Cup racing series and the limited production of very rare commemorative Bimmers that were sold around the world. Specifically, this moto is a great example of a well-preserved and maintained R1100S BCR that has always been adult ridden, never dropped or even leaned on, garage-kept, and will always be a fan favorite to every type of rider.

I purchased this from a private owner in spring of 2016, had it enclosed shipped from Florida, and loved every second of riding it. Sadly, I am moving and need to downsize for the time being. The spark plugs, all fluids, and tires were replaced at 7,300 miles (shortly before I purchased it). This bike is nearly spotless: I’d rate the condition of it around a 9.3/10 with only stress cracks on the windscreen, a few very minor scratches on the gas tank, seat cover, and a few chips on the lower front of the bellypan. I have pampered this moto for 3,000 miles, and most of them are highway from weekend adventures. The rear tire is starting to show a little wear, but should easily perform for another 2,500-3,000 miles before replacing.

Sure, it was not until the S1000RR and piles of money that BMW finally met the competition head on in World Super Bike – but the Boxer Cup paved the way. This example is very, very clean. Miles are certainly low for what we all know to be a dead reliable lump of a motor, and unlike some of the high-strung Italian supermodels you can ride this one through some pretty decently sized service intervals. It’s everything you would expect from a BMW twin, with a little extra cachet, performance and exclusivity. Check it out here for all of the details and some great photos. Cream of the crop: 1975 BMW R90S in Daytona Orange

For Sale: 1975 BMW R90S in Daytona Orange

RSBFS Homologation sportbike enthusiasts might be wondering what a lowly Bay Um Vey is doing on this site. After all, these teutonic tourers from Der Vaterland are not exactly known for Superbike performance. But in the mid-1970s with the R90S model, BMW took the performance fight to the Japanese and became the FIRST manufacturer to win a Superbike championship. That’s right: Reg Pridemore, riding a BWM R90S, won the inaugural AMA Superbike championship in 1976. Not bad performance credentials for the “gentleman’s express” brand of bikes.

If you can get past the Creamsicle appearence of the orange sunburst paintwork (known as Daytona Orange), this is one sharp looking bike. The bikini fairing gives the bike an aggressive stance and provides a surprising amount of wind protection. The instrument cluster features a speedo and a tach (although the 7,500 redline is a bit low by today’s standards), a volt meter and a clock. Top speed in stock form was reported to be approximately 125 MPH.

The classic airhead boxer twin pumps out a moderate 67 HP as delivered from the factory. Those are not big numbers today – nor were they in 1975, amid the era of the Japanese 750cc and 1000cc fours; certainly some creative tuning was utilized during the AMA era. This particular bike, while clean, sports non-standard plug wires. Sharp-eyed readers might spot the Brown Motor Works aftermarket sidestand – a huge improvement on the willowy stick BMW originally included on the bike.

Up for auction is a 1975 BMW R90S in Daytona Orange. This legendary and ground breaking motorcycle was only produced for three years. It is THE collectable BMW from the ’70s. It debuted in 1974 as BMW’s first sport bike and the first production bike to be sold with a fairing. It utilizes higher compression and BIG Del’Orto carburetors to produce a lot more power than the standard R90/6, making it a lot of fun to ride. This one is in excellent original cosmetic shape and has only covered 10,630 miles in its 36 years on the road. It got new tires two years/2,000 miles ago. It runs and rides beautifully. It has Lester mags, which were the hot aftermarket alternative to the original spoke wheels. It also has a Brown side stand and ride-off center stand. The front fender has a nice looking repaint, and the rest of the paint on the bike is original. It shows its age here and there but looks great overall. This is a bike that will only go up in value.

This particular bike looks to be pretty well cared for considering it is pushing 36 years of age. With the clock only showing 10,630 miles, there does not seem to be a lot of chance for abuse. The bike is quite presentable, and as the seller notes, this is one of THE collectable models in the historic BMW line. Located in the Windy City of Chicago, IL, this looks to be an interesting opportunity for prospective collectors.
