We don’t get the chance to share Yamaha FZR750RR’s too often with a production run of just 500 worldwide. Even more rare, I can’t say I’ve ever seen one with the factory race kit! Since Grants Pass is only a 3 hour drive for me I decided to go down to AutomaniaGP to check this one out in person. I met the owner Ted and we talked for several hours that afternoon and I can tell you he’s one of us: passionate, professional, and eager to talk about sportbikes. He’s assisting a collector move some rare pieces and this OW01 is one of them.

This particular bike has an interesting history. It was first sold new in the early 90’s to Norman Tietz by Sioux Cycle Shop in Mandan, North Dakota. Before even leaving the dealership, the bike was rolled into the shop and a Factory Race Kit was installed. The parts that we can see are the Rear Swing Arm, Quick Release Rear Axle, Dry Clutch, Magnesium Roller Flat Slide Mikuni Carburetors, Ohlin’s forks and Ohlin’s Race Rear Shock. A set of Marchesini Wheels were installed with Brembo Calipers. Included with the YCE kit were valves, crankshaft, cams, pistons, rods and a Short Ratio Gear Box. We have boxes and parts that make it more then plausible that these parts were installed at that time but there is no paperwork proving this. The bike definitely has a Short Ratio Transmission that is the only way the Dry Clutch can be installed. The current owner has had the bike since the late 90’s.

There wasn’t a whole lot that caught my eye in North America this week so I looked to the old world for some inspiration and they didn’t let me down.



It is all about the frame here.  I’m sure I’d get a pretty big yawn out of most of you by posting an average RS125 but I thought the Spondon frame really made this a unique bike.  The seller claims only two were ever produced.


I’m interested to know how it differs from a stock RS frame.  What needed to be improved?   Maybe not much since they only produced two?  I know 125 racers are consumed with trimming weight so is this possibly a lighter frame?

As for the rest of the bike, the seller lists the specs as:  a pre 95 engine, WP forks, Ohlins shock, Marvic wheels and Brembo brakes.  The auction is on going but it also has a BIN of 3,750 GBP (rougly $6,000).

Next up is a very tasty FZR750R.  It brings up the question; do we have any RSBFS readers that own an entire late 80’s-early 90’s super bike collection?  I’ve seen Honda collections, Yamaha collections etc. but does anyone own all of them?  Say an OWO1, RC30, GSXR750RR and ZX7-RR?  On second thought, don’t tell me, it will just depress me.

This appears to be a very nice stock example.

The info:

This bike was imported from Japan in 2002 and I have owned it for the last 4 1/2 years. It has had one other UK owner. It has had very limited use while I have had it, a few little rides here and there and it has been far too precious to me to take out on the track. It has never been out in the rain during my ownership, nor for that matter has it been out in the cold! That said, it is 23 years old an has not been sat in a museum either so there are a few cosmetic signs of age. However, because of it’s limited use, it feels the same to ride as it probably did back in 1989.
Would a Japanse spec OWO1 be any different than exported models?  The auction is ongoing here with it hovering in the 7,000 GBP  ($9,000) range as of this writing.  There does not appear to be a reserve; hmmmm.


I’m just taking a flyer on this one. This could be a Suzuki UK/Dream Machine Pepsi bike or just a simple respray.  As you may know, Suzuki UK had some RG500’s sprayed in Pepsi colors (and some in Skoal Bandit) to liven up sales.  Did they do that with the RG250 as well?

A couple of things don’t quite add up to me though.  First this is listed as a 1989.  Was the RGV250 (VJ21) not out in the UK in 1989?  Now that I said that, am I remembering correctly that the UK only got the VJ22 officially imported?  Secondly and maybe more curious is that it is a high mileage bike and the paint looks unblemished in the photos.  That makes me think it is a more recent respray.  On the flip side the paint looks correct and the red seat is just like the RG500.



Be it the real thing or not, it is at least some eye candy to start your week with.  The asking price is the real thing.  They are asking  3,999 GBP ( roughly $5,200).

USA- Nice example with 12,000 miles- $17,500

UK- Another clean bike with low miles- $14,000

I always enjoy reading my email when it starts with, “G’day”.   I hadn’t heard from my Aussie connection Chris in a while but he has checked in with a RC45 and an OWO1 down under.  They are both imported bikes from Japan and not registered to hit the roads at this time.  We haven’t had much exotica for the Aussies lately so enjoy.


The RC is definitely the sharper bike of the two.  It has 7,142 miles on the clocks and is stock except for the big Yoshimura muffler.

RC45’s always look so chunky to me from the side.  Not so much from the top.  I’ve never had the pleasure.  Do they feel like a big bike when riding?

The paint work looks to be in pretty good shape.  I did notice the speedo is a MPH unit.  Not sure how that jives with being an import from Japan.

From the auction:

We bought this bike into Australia from Japan under competition import approval,

however we know of another imported RC45 owner that intends to get his bike

registered through the low volume registration rules at a cost of about $2,500.00


I’d love to know more about this process from any of our Australian readers.  What sort of hoops are you guys jumping through to get your imports registered?  $2,500?  I thought our bone head politician’s  were bad.

I think the old FZR has seen a much harder life than the RC.  It isn’t a basket case by any means but it isn’t collector quality either.  It has been repainted  ( I always wonder why) and is missing some street equipment.  Apparently it does have a set of nice aftermarket Keihin carbs though.

Looks like an aftermarket exhaust there.   Might be a keeper if it is a full system.

For the right price is would make a sweet daily rider or a winter project to restore to original condition.  I guess a summer project in Australia.  Is it just me or is it squatting a bit too much in the rear?

This 1990 OW01 for sale is a fine example of Yamaha’s response to the superbike wars of the late 80’s and early 90’s. This is my second listing from Jeff’s collection, and this is a relist on RSBFS (see the first posting). Regular readers are probably familiar with this collection of bikes, all rare and in fantastic condition. He has one photo of 3 OW01’s sitting next to each other, so it would only be fair to share the love, right?

The OW01 was a homologation special from Yamaha intended to compete with the Honda RC30 in WSB racing. Although Fabrizio Pirovano was not able to take this bike to the promise land, Eddie Lawson won Suzuka and Dave Sadowski took the 1990 Daytona 200 on an OW01 – see a replica of that bike here.

The bike itself is typical homologation stuff from the era – Ohlins shock, titanium con rods and magnesium calipers. Production was the magic 500 units, but surprisingly few of them came to the US . In the seller’s words:

All original and in excellent condition with reasonably low milage.

Shown with YEC Kit exhaust canister but will have with original Yamaha exhaust muffler in place at time of sale

as the original has been wrapped up and boxed for safe keeping.

For those true enthusiasts and collectors out there, you”ll already know the history and how rare the 0W01 is here in the United States.

Reportedly, there were less than 30 of these machines Stateside when Yamaha imported them back in ’89-’90

and supplied the AMA Superbike team with theirs to race.

Most became race bikes -so the number of original condition machines that were never raced remains VERY low.

My guess is that the seller would be happy to fetch somewhere between his starting bid of $15k and $20k; any more would represent a strong sale. 1989 Yamaha OW 01 750 FZRR

Yes, I had to obtain special permission from the Boss man to post a non US listing, but since I know he is a sucker for OW 01’s I knew it wouldn’t be a problem. This one has 6,998 on the clock, which I think is necessary for a 20 year old bike. Much like the other Super bikes I’ve posted recently, I think it is important to ride them every now and then to keep everything lubricated and working properly. It also allows the new owner to have less guilt when he/she takes it out for a spin. Garage Queen bikes are good, but what fun are they?

The late 80’s/early 90’s Homologation Super Bikes are my absolute favorite. I know, I know I have a lot of favorites, but this era is the pinnacle for me.

Some information:

YAMAHA FZR750R OW01 SUPER BIKE first registered April 1989. Completely original bike in near perfect condition. Very hard to find like this and probably the best one we have been able to offer. Low mileage with only 6988 miles covered. These bikes are amongst the greatest bikes of all time and a collector’s dream. Frame type # 3FV – 300kph speedo. Road use only, not tracked. UK registered with log book V5 and MOT.


The paintwork is excellent.The frame is exactly as it left the factory – not polished and the fork lowers are again spotless. This bike has the twin Ohlins remotes and the aluminum top shock mount. The exhaust end can is perfect with no marks The bike stops, steers and rides beautifully and there are no strange noises . The motor pulls sweetly from low revs and idles evenly. Yes, it is expensive, but the best always are.

It is being offered in US dollars for $14,392, if my conversion is correct, or 8,995 pounds. As the seller states “it is expensive, but the best always are.” It looks to be all original with the exception of the tires and chain/sprocket. We posted a few RC’s recently, one with original everything and the other with replacement tires and chain/sprockets. The difference in bids really amazed me; the all original fetched bids up to 28g’s and the other stalled around 20g’s.

At $14,392.00 usd this is an absolute steal!

I would like to thank Jeff, one of our avid fans, for setting me straight on the valuation of these bikes.

These are super rare and this one looks like it would make a fine addition to any Homologation Collection.

Rory and his business partner have contacted Rare Sport Bikes For Sale to alert of us of a collection of 17 bikes that will soon be for sale.

His message included the following details:

My business partner, Lee and I are trying to help his neighbor sell the bikes owned by her late husband. The 17 bikes that are left to sell are primarily sport bikes and they are all somewhat special in one way or another: Limited Editions, grey market, low (or no) mileage, etc. It’s taking some time for the widow to have the bikes re-titled in her name, but we are now getting to the point where we need to figure out how to find buyers looking for the somewhat unusual bike.
