Silver Meteor – 2007 BMW K1200S

Unlikely as it would be to see a shaft-drive Beemer with a stretched swingarm and a stance that says “staged !”, it’s even more surprising that those wild Bayerischen built it themselves !  For just a few model years the R1200S made a flat out name for itself, though this Miami example looks to have been ordered with every option and then pampered for under 6,000 miles.

2007 BMW K1200S for sale on eBay

BMW had a 1200cc four in the stable for several years before the K1200S, but the new model was optimized for power – with 13-to-1 compression, electronically controlled ignition and injection, and 167 hp.  Torque was prodigious at 95 ft.-lbs. but peaked at sporty 8,250 rpm.  BMW’s  new Duolever front end used a double-wishbone system to isolate steering and braking forces.  The Paralever rear was stretched to accommodate the superbike power, with a wheelbase some four inches longer than a more track-oriented sportbike.  As speed helped the K1200S feel like lighter than its 500-plus lbs., the slippery bodywork masked the land missile’s velocity.

Presented by a used moto boutique, this K1200S is a premium build, with ABS and electronic suspension adjustment.  The brushed Remus exhaust plays well with the silver bodywork, and might be the only mod aboard.  Despite a liberal slathering of protectant, this -S looks great and the dealer has these comments in the eBay auction –

This K1200S is in great condition, always kept in the garage, no accidents nor major dents or scratches and a clean title.

It is a very comfortable motorcycle, with symmetrical deeply padded seat sitting positions to the handlebars and the pegs are positioned just right, to create a real all-day riding position. A design screen with full benefit of its protection from windblast, while mounted clocks show all the necessities, including a gear indicator and fuel gauge.

Bonneville regular Andy Sills was enlisted by BMW to take a new K1200S out to the salt flats, the fall before the 2006 model year would ship.  A stock class record was ratified, the average of two runs just equaling the 173,68 mph mark set by Ernst Henne’s supercharged BMW streamliner in 1937.  Rather than four miles of full throttle, hoping this example will just get the occasional blast down the connector, maybe as Andy set another record – with a fearless pillion.

Looking Forward to the Weekend – 2022 Mecum Motorcycle Auctions

We visited on Friday and have a picture gallery on our RSBFS Facebook page. -dc

Bidding on this – 1975 Ducati Imola racebike – didn’t meet the reserve Friday morning, but tomorrow’s another day.

RSBFS contributors are attending the Las Vegas stadium auctions this week, and spied a few standouts for Saturday.  Enjoy a look at the rider controls, but review the details – here –.

S28 1992 Kawasaki ZX7R

S54.1 1982 Suzuki GSX-1000S Katana

S142 2002 Ducati MH900E

S184 1985 Kawasaki 750 Turbo

S225 1972 Harley-Davidson XR750

S272 1991 Bimota YB9

S274 1999 Bimota SB8R

Like any auction, some bikes looked great, some raised a few questions, re-affirming that there’s no replacement for an actual look at what’s for sale.  The pack seemed a bit thinner than years past, still you’ll see some special and rare machines, just have to temper your bidding to accommodate a contingency or two.  A worthwhile trip and Vegas isn’t bad either.

Oca Nera – 1995 Moto Guzzi Sport 1100

Moto Guzzi has always incorporated their classic ideas into new models, and the 1100 Sport is a great mix of engineering and style.  This one has new batteries and tires and looks ready for a long summer trip.

1995 Moto Guzzi Sport 1100 for sale on eBay

Presenting a new machine at a certain price point is a series of compromises, in this case trading their V-twin four-valve engine for 100 more cc’s and pushrod actuated valves, giving the Sport 1100 90 hp and the usual plentiful ft.-lbs.  40mm Dell’Orto carburetors met emission regs with a catalyst, and the typical backbone chassis was enhanced with cast alloy side plates to mount the swingarm and footpegs.  The half-fairing has become a Guzzi classic and incorporated fresh air intakes.

This Wisconsin owner states he is the second rider, and it looks very good for its 23,000 miles, but with a little attention could be a star.  The NLA Staintune mufflers are a period upgrade and are well-suited to the carburetted engine.  And sound excellent in the owner’s – video –.  Durability has long been a Guzzi strong point and there’s no reason to thing this Sport wouldn’t want all the miles a new owner could throw at it.  From the eBay auction:

In overall stock condition and ready to be enjoyed.  It has the highly desired Staintune exhaust which sounds spectacular.  It has brand new proper sized Pirelli front and rear tires on it installed in May of 2021 that only have a couple hundred miles on them.  These bikes have two batteries mounted in the tail and BOTH batteries are new as of May 2021.  The oil was changed in spring of 2021 as well.  From the prior owner there is a receipt for some gear box seal work being performed.  This Guzzi runs great, shifts great, brakes great, and does not leak.  Hop on and enjoy the unique experience !

As stated, the cosmetics overall are very nice.  It is an extremely presentable and attractive machine.  It is the type of machine that draws quite a bit of attention and passion.  It is in nicer shape than would be expected for the age and mileage but it does have some typical minor nicks and light scratches here and there, but nothing that stands out or distracts from the motorcycle’s presentation.  The black finish is still the original Guzzi factory applied finish, is of impressive quality, is exceptionally smooth and glossy.  I have only lightly detailed it here and there.  With some more effort with polishing the finish and other areas on this bike would turn out even better.  Note:  In the photos/video it is shown without bar end weights.  I have since installed bar end weights.

I am essentially the second owner, and all owners have been adult motorcycling enthusiast owners.  The original owner had it until a couple years ago, until he passed away.  He resided in Wisconsin and put the majority of the miles on the Guzzi, and took excellent care of it.  One can tell it has been stored indoors, kept clean, and been well maintained.  A collector purchased the Guzzi from the original owner’s estate, owned it for  a couple of years, and I purchased it from the collector.  I have greatly enjoyed riding it and it offers up such a unique experience.  The 1100cc V-twin offers up such a sweet exhaust note and are known for being rock solid reliable.  This 1995 version is the carbureted model and as stated runs excellent, no tuning or adjustment needed.

In the Guzzi galaxy, the Sport 1100 is on the sportier side, with low clip-ons and seat’s backstop indicating great potential.  The realities of the big axial twin require smooth power additions in the corner, though it reviewed as a very stable handler.  With the Make Offer button, this might be a great addition to a Moto Guzzi collection, or a a perfect place to start.

Glamourpuss – 1994 Ducati 888 in Britain

The 888 was designed by Pierre Terblanche and a light update to the muscular 851, Ducati’s first desmoquattro.  American Doug Polen had won the 1991 Superbike World Championship on an uprated 851, and the 888 homolagated the changes for the next year, returning with the #1 plate.  This 888 has been treated to a silky resto-mod and a day in the photo studio.

1994 Ducati 888 ( Britain ) for sale on eBay

The architecture of Ducati’s original four-valve desmo led to a distinctive sound, the rat-a-tat exhaust announcing 104 hp.  Often seen with number plates front and rear, the fairing has fresh air intakes and snug monoposto seat.  Showa forks and Ohlins monoshock were constants throughout the build, and for 1994 a carbon front fender was added, and wheels were painted to match the bronze frame.

Just about everything about this English 888 has been updated and/or re-finished to a very high level.  The robot-faced front end and engraved triple-tree won’t please everyone, but the owner says most stock parts are included in the eBay auction:

Some features include:
Twin injector throttle bodies.
Full 50mm race exhaust system. New.
Corse slipper clutch.
Alloy subframe.
Vented engine casing (clutch side).
Rear ride height adjusters.
New brakes (Braking rotors), pads and lines.
New Nitron race prepared rear shock.
Revised and updated front nose with new lights.
Extended/strengthened side stand. Now does not lean over too far or spring up.
AFAM alloy chain & sprocket set.
New Bridgestone tyres BT016.
Revised one off airbox with foam filter & 916 style bell mouths and 916 throttle.
Billet rear sets, handle bars, petrol cap, levers, pre-load, reservoir caps and clutch slave cylinder.
Carbon belt covers, front mudguard, hugger, instrument surrounds.
Engraved top yoke by Don Blocksidge. Plain mirror polished top yoke also sold with the bike.
Rear swingarm, yokes, suspension linkages and fork lowers have had casting marks removed and then mirror polished.
Paintwork brought back to top standard.
Every nut and bolt changed to stainless steel.
New hoses.
Heads removed from bike and full service with valves brought up to race specs with new belts.
There’s been a lot of bespoke parts made for this bike and 100+ hours spent on the build.

Hard to argue with a Euro-spec 888 – brawny, rare and championship-winning, and there are a lot of nice touches here.  The alloy seat frame and improved side stand are my favorites, and the undressed pictures are at least as interesting as the studio shots.  Finding the rider to pay this kind of premium might take a little doing, but the current owner can enjoy the view while the search goes on…

Fundamentally – 1996 Buell S1 Lightning with 23 Miles !

When introduced in 1996, the S1 Lightning was a little easier on the bank account and slightly improved in the power-to-weight department.  Way back to basics, this all original Lightning has just 23 miles and needs only a new collector.

1996 Buell S1 Lightning for sale on eBay

Buell’s second production motorcycle, the S1 incorporates some usual Buell features like the 1203cc Sporty engine with belt drive, patented isoplanar engine mounts, tube frame, with horizontal pull-shock and muffler.  The later rim-diameter front disk brake is hinted at but this single disk is more conventional.  Undersized bikini fairing, fuel tank, and passenger seat all indicate a short-haul fun machine, and the 101 hp / 95 ft.-lbs. drivetrain made shifting the 5-speed more or less optional.

Right down to the rarely seen plastic rear fender, this Buell really is new-old-stock.  The owner indicates it was originally in the collection of Robert Petersen, publisher of Hot Rod, Motorcyclist, and many other magazines.  Pictures show it to be spotless through the glare.  From the eBay auction:

This is the cleanest Buell you will ever find. It has just 23 miles on yes 23 it had 11 on it when it left the Peterson museum and was serviced and they test rode it for 12 miles. I have not started it but the factory battery still has a charge. The fuel was drained. This bike is as it left the factory. Not a mark on it anywhere and the paint is as bright as it was at the day it left the factory as its never been outside.

Buell had their ups and downs, but a surprisingly long and innovative run from the Battletwin to the 1125R some 22 years later.  The S1 was only made for a few years, and around 5,000 examples.  Outdated when introduced, the S1 vibrated to the potato-potato beat, and was somewhat overweight for being naked.  But beloved by some for its brawny basic-ness.  No doubt there is a H-D dealer or collector who’ll want this first-year S1 for the display stand…

Special Order – 2001 Aprilia RSV Mille R

As good as Aprilia’s first superbike was, the R-spec variant was worth stretching the budget for.  This RSV Mille R is in an eye-catching color not often seen in 2001, and impeccable condition.

2001 Aprilia RSV Mille R for sale on eBay

Aprilia was showing off their design and manufacturing chops on the RSV Mille, the box tube perimeter frame elements aren’t box-like but sculpted triangular, welded to cast frame connectors and steering head.  Similar construction for the banana swingarm which allows the out-sized exhaust to climb out from underneath.  Carbon mudguards, fairing vents, and hand deflectors are the real deal.  Big changes for the -R are full Öhlins suspension including steering damper, and forged Marchesini seventeens.

Apparently in private ownership after a stint in Meguiar’s Car Care collection, this RSV has just under 3,100 miles and is awfully nice for its age.  The owner says this in the eBay auction:

one of a kind Aprilia RSV 1000R, custom ordered from the factory by the Meguiar’s car polish family’s private auto collection in 2001.  Although it has been in their collection since new it has been ridden and maintained so it has some mileage on it.  At only 3000 miles and not a scratch.

All the paint color is bright and vibrant, all of the fluids and manufacturer recommended scheduled maintenance is followed by the book.  This bike is as new as you can get in the way it looks and runs just like the day it rolled off the manufacturer’s floor.  This bike has all oem parts just the way it was ordered from Aprilia factory with upgraded Öhlins front and rear suspension and all carbon fiber fairings and fuel tank.

The bike has brand new factory brand tires with aftermarket rim tape for cosmetic appeal.  I was honored that they sold me this bike and have had a real blast owning it and showing it off.  I own a number of exotic bikes and am an avid sport bike enthusiast.  Letting go of a couple of my bikes to make room for a brand new bike.

The RSV reviewed as a little overweight, but the torquey, trouble-free drivetrain makes up for a lot.  This monoposto is more of a special order than a custom, a low-mileage creampuff with the desirable -R equipment.  Bidding is quite active and it’ll be interesting to see where it goes…

Less Being More – 1993 Honda CBR900RR

Honda set the superbike class on its ear in 1992 with the CBR900RR FireBlade, for all intents dropping liter performance into a mid-weight machine.  No longer would a 1000 cc bike have to be a GT weighing 500+ lbs., the CBR900RR was a sharp-handling supersport with a trim endurance fairing.  The low-mile RR on offer has been fawned over and looks museum-ready.

Based on a stroked 750 engine, the 893 cc engine claims 122 hp, fed by 90’s state of the art – four 38mm carburetors.  Developed by a special projects division, the aluminum-beam frame holds 45mm conventional forks and Pro-Link rear suspension.  Handling is helped by the choice of 16-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels.  Honda addressed the issue of weight divided by horsepower in the CBR900RR, and made few compromises.  Brackets that could have been steel are aluminum, and castings that were aluminum became magnesium.  All said and done the RR weighed just a few pounds more than Honda’s own 600, but ran the 1/4 in well under 11 seconds.

Exhaustively pictured with and without bodywork, it’s hard to even see where a wrench has touched this CBR.  Seems like the 4,300-odd miles might be an overstatement.  Battery out and fuel system drained, it’s a display bike as the owner states in the eBay auction:

It does have low miles and the bike should tell that story and it did. The tank was clean, no rust or paintwork had been done and it started right up and ran and idled very well. Once home the bike was stripped down to frame and motor. The bike was in great shape underneath as well and was cleaned up, oil and filter changed, fuel and air filters changed, tank and carbs drained, battery removed and discarded then put into climate controlled storage. I have all the receipts of parts that were ordered and installed. All put into a binder for the new owner.

Can’t say what the reserve might be on a pristine classic like this, but the auction has a lot of bids and a few days yet to run.  Maybe you are starting or looking for the capstone to a collection, this CBR900RR appears to be able to meet any requirements…

MV Agusta package deal! F4CC and F4 Serie Oro

2006 MV Agusta F4CC (#76/100) and 2000 MV Agusta F4 Serie Oro #281

If you have been looking for a way to start an awesome motorcycle collection, are a big fan of high-end Italian bikes, and have about $92k burning a hole in your pocket, then look no further than this MV Agusta F4CC and MV Serie Oro combo pack. It is essentially a buy one, get one free deal… kind of. If you use the Buy-It-Now option for the auction, then you get two bikes. Seems like too good of a deal to pass up!

It can be hard to get things accomplished here in the RSBFS office with a bunch of bike nuts when it’s the longest day of the year and sunny out. I was the first back from my ride and had these bikes sitting on my desk thanks to RSBFS super-fan Marty. Thanks! Marty puts it best when he says.

While some say the MV Agusta F4 is the greatest design ever done by Claudio Castiglioni, personally I think that honor goes to the 916/996. Sadly we will never see any more of his designs. Its been almost a year since his passing last august at the age of 64….

The F4 isnt a boy racer/thrash bike for the track, its appeal is typically more cerebral than that. Perhaps the best way for those uninitiated to the F4 is to thin of it as an iron fist in a velvet glove. If Ducati is the Ferrari of motorcycles, then perhaps MV is the maserati..

While the price seems high right now, this auction does include both a 2006 CC and a 2000 Serie Oro along with a bunch of extras so collectors take note.

Not only do you get two bikes if you use the BIN price, you also get a ton of extras that any MV collector would love to have. This includes a watch from the F4CC, jacket, rear stands, brochures, certificates of authenticity, bike covers, and even an Arai R7-RR Agostini replica helmet. There are some more things included as well. Some of which aren’t included if the F4CC sells via the standard auction and the Oro isn’t included. Be sure to check the auction and read the details carefully. There are a couple of ways the sale could play out.

Read all of the seller’s description by clicking here!

These are some seriously gorgeous and collectible bikes. You could pick these up, then maybe see if the seller wants to sell that Senna in the photos too! Just need to add an Ago and a Mamba kitted F4 and you are set! You can check out the auction here and start you collection today!
