A Few, Very Rare, Race Bikes For Sale; Ex Roberts & Aoki

These three authentic race bikes are very special in their historical value, for winning and for not!

First Up:

Bike:  1999 Honda CBR900RR Erion Racing; Ex Kurtis Roberts

Location:  California

Price:  POR

The seller, RMD Motors, is sparse on the details, but it should be obvious what you’re looking at being that this bike is said to be authentic.  They do state that the bike produces 200hp at the rear wheel, comes with nothing other than what is in the photos (Read: No spares)–but that does include Kurtis’ actual leathers.

The AMA Formula Xtreme series is intended for production bikes, with some, but not many, rules on what parts of the bike you can exchange for aftermarket parts.  The intent of Formula Xtreme is to allow as many types of motorcycles to compete, anything from inline-fours to air-cooled V-twins.  Formula Xtreme racing is usually one of the more competitive and entertaining races of an AMA weekend; Many veterans such as Eric Bostrom, Jake Zemke, Josh Hayes, Nicky Hayden and Kurtis Roberts among others have cut their teeth in Formula Xtreme.

Erion Racing has continued to be a prominent name in Honda AMA racing with even a special Erion Racing edition CBR929RR released for the U.S. market by the manufacturer.  For 1999, Erion Racing was the winner of the Formula Xtreme championship with another title in 2000.  I’m not adept on the Formula Xtreme rules for 1999, but it’s obvious looking at the bike what some of it’s features are:  Race bodywork with mounts, analog tach’,  race fuel tank, larger radiator, Erion SS/Carbon full exhaust system, aftermarket triple clamps, Ohlins forks & rear shock, Brembo calipers, Marchesini wheels and I’m sure much more that I didn’t notice!  This is a chance to own a fantastic looking, legitimate, race bike with a championship under it’s belt.  I’m unaware how many races this particular bike won, I’m not sure about the 900 designation as this should be a 919 or 929 based on the year, but you still have a serious piece of AMA history regardless and I’m sure RMD would be happy to answer your questions.

Next Up:

Bike:  2002 Kenny Roberts Proton KR3; Ex Nobuatsu Aoki

Location:  California

Price:  POR

As you may know, 2002 was the last year for two-strokes in MotoGP.  Two-strokes had their last hurrah in 2001, but couldn’t overcome the 490cc deficit they had to the four-strokes in 2002 and were finally obsolete–How you may feel about this is up for debate.  Regardless, Proton KR racing had a respectable finish in the 2001 championship with Nobuatsu Aoki & Jeremy Mcwilliams finishing 12th & 14th in the championship, respectively.  The disadvantages for the privateer team of Proton KR were immense and they didn’t receive much help from their V-3 format.  The four cylinder bikes of 500gp had the most tractable power delivery–If it’s possible to say that for a GP two-stroke–while also having the most power.  As an example, the NSR500v was a V-Twin example of Honda’s factory NSR500 designed for privateers and had nowhere near the power of the factory bike.  The theory was that the two and three cylinder machines had a lower weight and could out corner the larger bikes, in practice the two and three cylinder bikes hadn’t a chance but on a wet course or a very tight one.  The Proton KR3 debuted in 1997 and was a joint venture between legendary racer Kenny Roberts and Malaysian giant Proton.  While they may not have won any championships, or come close–and as frustrating as I imagine it was for KR–I’m sure “King” Roberts enjoyed it, I know I would have!

This example looks to be in fantastic condition.  The seller states that this bike will run and comes with a small selection of spares.  As I’m sure you can imagine, it would be no small feat to run this bike anywhere, especially when consumables are accounted for.  However, if you have the funds, ask yourself:  How many times does a 2001 500GP bike come up for sale?

Lastly:

Bike:  2004 Kenny Roberts Proton KRV5 XM2; Ex Kurtis Roberts

Location:  California

Price:  POR (Rumor has it $300,000)

The Proton KR KRV5 debuted in 2002 with the adoption of four-strokes.  The V5 in KRv5 denotes that this bike has a 60deg V5 arrangement and a displacement of 990cc, putting out 200hp @ 15,000rpm.  The bodywork appears to be the latter iteration of the KRV5, which is consistent with the Valencia technical inspection sticker.  For 2004, Kurtis Roberts was only able to finish twice in France and Brazil with 15th and 19th, respectively.  The bike for sale here shows a technical inspection sticker for Valencia in 2004, however Roberts never started the GP at Valencia in 2004.

So, what are you getting for your money?  As things stand right now, you’ll get a fully functioning seven year old, privateer, MotoGP bike with a minimal spares package.  This bike currently doesn’t hold the value that any of the factory bikes would and shouldn’t for a long, long time.  However, none of those factory bikes are currently available–that I’m aware of–and you’ll probably be waiting a very long time for one to pop up if you don’t already know someone who has one.

So, all of these bikes look to be from the same seller/collection, but which one is the one to have if you can only choose one?  Obviously, the most expensive will always be one of the Proton KR bikes, with a large gap back to the CBR.  My money says that the 2002 Proton KR3 will always be the most valuable bike of the three; The most important influence being that it is one of the last two-stroke 500GP/MotoGP bikes to ever be produced–privateer or otherwise.  The 2004 KRV5 will always be a interim MotoGP bike and if the rules are again revised to allow 1000cc bikes, it won’t even have a displacement draw.  The CBR is a National Championship bike, even if it’s only in Formula Xtreme, and that kind of provenance doesn’t come everyday.

There are two kinds of collectors these bikes are for:  One who has a decent amount of money to spend on a collector bike, and someone who has obscene amounts of money for a collector bike.  The Proton’s are obviously the expensive bikes with the Erion CBR checking the affordable box.  Both of the MotoGP bikes have parts that you’re never going to be able to purchase from any retailer, and I’m sure the CBR has some good HRC bits on it too.  I wouldn’t be ashamed to have any of these three bikes, but I’d absolutely love to have a final year Grand Prix two-stroke.  If nothing else, spend a little time to enjoy the photos!

1985/86 Buell RR1000 Battletwin Factory Racer Located In The U.K.

This is a Buell RR1000 that ran for the factory in AMA competition!  Located in Tring, United Kingdom is a 1985/86 Buell RR1000 Battletwin. 

Supposedly there are 50, or so, of these running around the world and due to collectors eating these up early on–Gasp!–the majority of the bikes were never raced.  The chassis that is featured here has, as the seller claims, been run in the 1985/86 AMA Battle of the Twins events and a Battle of the Twins event in Italy.  To know the entire history of this bike, we must go to the seller:

This bike was purchased as a kit of parts directly from Erik Buell in 1992 (less wheels, forks and brakes) by an Italian collector who then built the bike to it’s current specification in 1993. The bike was then raced in the italian BOT (Battle of the Twins) of that year under the CR&S banner.

The chassis varies slightly from the production RR1000 chassis and is described by Erik Buell as a “lightweight version which is better for racing”. This chassis and other parts were used by Buell Racing in 1986 as part of the “works” supported race effort.

This bike is top spec inside and out built with Brembo billet brakes and race discs, Ohlins suspension; front forks are GP type and rear shock was built for Buell and the wheels are Technomagnesio. The Engine, primary and gearbox were completely overhauled in 2002 receiving new pistons, titanium valves, race springs, rods, all bearings and crank rebuild. Cams are Storz and the heads are fully gas followed and twin plugged. Carbs are 42mm flatside Mikuni’s. Exhaust is Buell works. The bike has done very little work since but has been maintained regardless.

This bike seems be made up of some very real factory parts with a very real race history.  The seller claims to have, and shows, the documentation of this bike’s history.  Recently, everyone seems to have become sentimental to anything with a Buell badge–except perhaps a blast–because of the recent demise of Buell.  The sale of this bike seems to coincide perfectly with this rose-colored rush to remember the good times before H-D brought everything to a halt.  This bike is all the money at $155,000; however, it is one of the first Buells and actually carries an AMA season and European race history.  This bike is very rare no matter what your thoughts of Buell as a company are; What will reassure that this bike stays insanely valuable will be a large number of people feeling that this bike is very, very special–I don’t think this should be a problem.  See a fantastic write up by Dave Gess here.  See the RR1000 on eBay .

1994 Honda RVF750R RC45 #19 Of 50

A very nice looking RC45 has become available in Ohio!  Located in Canton, Ohio is a 1994 Honda RVF750R with less than 2,000 original miles.  The seller states that this bike has been meticulously maintained and is in perfect condition.  The seller states that this bike is number nineteen of the fifty RC45’s that were imported into the U.S to satisfy AMA requirements.  The bike has been fitted with a titanium full exhaust system by Yoshimura (A rare piece in and of itself), Zero Gravity windscreen, and a K&N air filter.  The seller states that “The PGMFi has also been wired to top secret HRC specs.”  I suspect this is a reference to the ECU that originally limited the power output to 85hp but could reach 148hp with serious HRC components–I doubt this bike has that much power but it would be curious to know what “top secret” things have been done to it.  Phil posted a UK RC45 with zero miles that was listed for $39,000, making this bikes price of $35,000 agreeable as it is actually in the U.S., has less than 2k miles, and is fitted with the titanium Yosh system.  The original MSRP for these bikes was $27,000.  The RC45 was the first production Honda to feature USD forks and is fitted with the sixteen inch front wheel that Honda preferred during the 1990s.  As with the majority of the bikes we post on RSBFS, this is one that I’d be happy to own.  See the bike on Craigslist here.

1993 Ducati 888 SPO In Virginia

This is a very nice looking 888 SPO located on the East Coast.  Located in Varina, Virginia is a 1993 Ducati 888 SPO with 17,500mi.  The ’93 SPO is what was offered in the U.S. because the SP5 couldn’t pass U.S. regulations and they needed something to Homologate the 888 for AMA Superbike.  These are more closely related to the 888 Strada than the SP5 bikes.  Some more information about the SPO:

The SPO engine was identical to that of the 888 Strada, but many chassis components were shared with the SP5.The stainless-steel front discs and Showa fork were shared with the 888 Strada, but the SPO had a single seat, upswept exhaust pipes, and an Ohlins shock absorber with eccentric ride height adjustment. Even though it was a Monoposto, there wasn’t an aluminum rear subframe as on other Sport Production models.

Doug posted one of these SPO’s with 13,696mi for $8,900 just less than two weeks ago and it can be seen here.  The asking price for this example seems to be a very fair $7,000 in comparison.  This bike looks to be in perfect, original and unmodified condition.  If you’re looking for art that you can take out on the town and into the back-roads, see this SPO on Craigslist here.

2006 Yamaha R1 Limited Edition–Still in the crate

Again, I know R1s aren’t rare but, the LEs are and this one is still in the crate.  Located in Cedar Hills, Oregon is a 2006 Yamaha R1 Limited Edition in unused condition.  To quote the seller:

I have a 2006 Yamaha YZF-R1 Limited Edition for sale. This is one of only 500 ever produced, and still in the original crate at my warehouse. It’s in pristine condition, has never turned a wheel except maybe after it rolled off the assembly line and into it’s shipping container.  This bike sold for $18,000 new, and I purchased it primarily as a collector’s item never intending to use it. A nice display piece for sure, but would be great for weekend rides, or track days for someone who wants one of the best all time sportbikes, unmatched for it’s speed, powerful engine and superb handling.  The bike is still in the crate, but I will be happy to assemble and service it for the new owner. I am a career Honda, Yamaha, Kawasaki, and Suzuki tech.  A factory service manual, owner’s manual, and Limited Edition R1 tool kit will be included with purchase.

3 Yoshimura Suzuki AMA superbikes

Please be aware that two of the three have all of the data logging, traction control, and race instrument clusters removed. This drops the price considerably. Due to the current AMA roadracing rules, Yoshimura Suzuki bought these bikes from a dealership before converting them to race bikes. So they have proper VIN, registration, and titles! So in essence, one could convert these 200+ HP Superbikes into streetbikes if they wanted.

The last bike listed is Mat Mladin’s race bike, as is, with all the insane factory race bits still on the bike. As a matter of fact, the tires are still the same ones still on this bike as last raced.

Due to the new homologation rules of the AMA Superbike series, Yoshimura Suzuki started out the 2009 season using 2008 bikes. So though these are ’08 models, they were only built back at the beginning of this year, just in time to start the 2009 race season. This is the real deal. Factory spec full on superbikes.
