WOW! 32 years old and looking damn fine if I do say so myself!

Not me, silly- the CB-1! Besides I’m sitting squarely in my fif. . . I mean my mid-life crises stage and will be placing a bid on this one as soon as I finish babbling on about it.

Let’s a take a serious look at this one- shall we?





I’m still in awe of this little CB-1. I’m guessing it’s because we regularly see so many neglected machines with 500 miles look dirty AF.
I see a little oxidation on the side panels, but again, we see a lot more on than this on a regular basis. Hopefully I don’t need to remind you of the fact you’re looking at what appears* to be an un-restored 32 year old machine.


These weigh in just a touch under 400#’s, produce 56ish HP, a paltry 27 lbft of torque and utilize a single front and rear disc to keep all that power and torque in check. I know it’s a little heavy for being a small displacement motorcycle, but it wasn’t built or intended to burn up the race track. These were built for and are perfect commuter bikes with a comfy riding position.

These hit the showroom floor with a MSRP $4,299 and as you can imagine, they went over like a Led Zeppelin. Even though it didn’t make a splash back in the 90’s the little CB-1 has RSBFS.com and myself to keep it’s flickering flame alive and well.

This Honda NC30 is from our clients estate collection. We took care of the more modern machines and are very familiar with this bike in particular.
Imported recently, he had us install the Tyga exhaust and jetting work. We also upgraded the radiators and cooling lines. New Chain and sprockets along with a complete service and detailing. This NC has steel braided brake lines front and rear.
This is one of the nicest looking and running NC’s we have had come through here.
Legally imported with all documentation,this machine was not registered before he passed. At 25 years old and with all import documentation, it is ready to be titled in the new owners state and name.


Tyga states their full exhaust system coupled with their Maggot silencer adds 7hp bumping it to 59hp and reduces weight by 50% over the stock exhaust. If 59hp isn’t enough for you, I’m quite certain the boys have a few gallons of leaded Power Mist Fuel to help you reach 60hp. 🙂
As mentioned, you can see the new sprocket, chain and braided rear brake line.


This one hasn’t been out much and only showing 18,962km or 11,782 miles on the odometer.


Dressed in Honda Ruby Red, an 18″ rear wheel takes care of the party end while the 17″ front paired with 296mm dual discs handles the business end.

As you can see by all of the high-res images- this little VFR is in excellent condition and the boys at the shop have it ready to roll. As a matter of fact, this one is so nice it may be better served posted up on a race stand in the toy room.

1993 Yamaha SRX400 For Sale on eBay!

In 1993, an almost liter bike sized machine with a funny sized front tire was all the rave and blah, blah, blah #BeenThereDoneThat
While Baba was doing his thing, Yamaha was off to the side tinkering on their own niche machine- the SRX 400 Thumper!

I normally frown upon rare machines with a complete overhaul and modern updates, but I also realize I’m almost as old as dirt and my favorite 90’s machines are starting to require some freshening up.
I’m not a fan of the muscle car term they use for such overhauls and I literally hate to say it, but in this case it fits . . . I can’t even type it.

Whew! The seller didn’t use the muscle car term, but they did mention a beautiful high end titanium exhaust! Let’s have a look- shall we?

That my friends is a dime piece! Lets look at that again-

The SRX was already a welter weight at 374#’s and we all know the 5# stock exhaust is best used as a boat anchor. So that sweet ass Ti exhaust drops it down to 370’ish#’s and definitely adds a few ponies. Now, it’s a given that SRX ponies are almost as hard to find as frogs hair, but rest assured, they are there. How many you ask? Let’s be generous and call it 35’ish with the Ti exhaust and one cylinder.

The Olhins is a nice touch and I’m sure the stock unit was worn out and FUBAR.

Meet You Half Way – 1979 Yamaha RD400F Daytona Special

To celebrate Kenny Roberts’ 1978 Daytona win, Yamaha styled a distinctive final-year model with all the air-cooled improvements since 1973.  Here’s an Ohio native that shows like it has 1,2oo miles instead of the 12,000 the odometer says.

The RD400F is just bit more grown up than the original RD350, though it shares the wheelbase, 28mm Mikuni’s and kickstarter.  Along the way it acquired five additional ponies, alloy wheels, capacitive discharge ignition, and a wider rear tire.  Its additional 35 lbs. meant 25 more feet in the 60-to-zero test, though braking was identical with front and rear 267mm discs.  Changes to the engine’s porting and an internal bypass improved rideability and lowered emissions, along with an almost Suzuk-ish shroud on the head which improved the noise signature.

Probably looking better than it did on day one, this collector’s item has been restored and polished to a fair-thee-well.  Since the Daytona is an exercise in white, black and chrome, it’s naturally photogenic.  Expert readers will have to weigh in on any discrepancies.  Comments from the eBay auction:

Only 12,122 miles. Clear title in my name. Numbers matching with all the 2VO stampings also. This is a beautiful survivor. The body set has been repainted with the pearl white to perfection. New seat cover. Tires are also new. Gas tank is clean metal inside. Everything works like it should. Starts easy and runs and rides great. Pulls hard and smooth through the gears just like it should. This is stunning survivor.

When the last RD400 rolled out of the showroom, Yamaha was in the middle of a staggering 12 year run of luck in the Daytona 200, and Roberts also won the last of that streak on his YZR680 / OW69.  Yamaha brought back the two-stroke twin ( in a water-cooled form ) in 1983, but took it offshore after only two years.  The sound, simplicity, and lighter weight make the air-cooled RD’s worth pursuing, but rather few are in this remarkable condition.

Francisco’s Portuguese collection had two NS400R’s, and the second is in the very collectible Rothmans race colors.  Totally stock with 14,609 miles, it’s still in very show-worthy condition.

Honda built the NSR500 for the GP circuit, but realized even their best showroom customers were merely mortal road riders, and especially for the home market, wanted a bike that could be licensed and insured.  The NS400R had a lot in common with the two-stroke triple, like downdraft carburetors, alloy chassis, and separate ATAC exhaust systems for the single and paired cylinders.  The closely spaced six-speed was tall to start off, but allowed 125 mph in top.  The short wheelbase turned out to be comfortable for full sized riders, and has an incongruous pillion ( this example under cover ).  The Rothmans tribute livery leaves room for the rest of the sponsorship decals as seen on Wayne Gardner’s GP machine.

Representing a Lisbon collector, Francisco has shown several classic sportbikes to RSBFS readers,  all very collectible and showing quite clean and original.  The Rothmans finishes and metals are much better than the almost 10K miles and 35 years would have you believe.  He has this to say about the NS400R in the eBay auction –

Reviews showed the NS400R to be capable of embarrassing bonafide superbikes in between straightaways, and sometimes most of the way down a short straight as well.  Similarly, this NS400R could be in a collection’s sweet spot, but still be available for a mental health day.

Part of a Portuguese collection, this excellent NS400R is a rare three cylinder two-stroke. In ready-to-display condition, its combination of peaky power and light weight seems too promising not to at least try.

Transferring concepts directly from Freddie Spencer’s GP bike, the 387cc engine has two forward cylinders with a middle vertical, providing a relatively smooth 72 hp.  The torque band is extended by Honda’s Automatic Torque Amplification Chamber system, which helps the engine breathe at lower rpm’s.  It has an early adoption of the alloy chassis, and anti-dive forks based on brake application.  More and better tires are now available for the NSR’s staggered 16 and 17-inch wheels, which are very light Comstar variants.  The livery is a great commemorative and just needs a big number 1 in the yellow panels.

Original right down to the exhausts, this NS400R presents beautifully and could be in the garage or the studio.  Francisco represents the collection and has these comments in the ebay.uk auction:

Though they could’ve marketed a fire-breathing 500 smoker, Honda toned it down to the point where a mere mortal rider can have a ball on the NS400R, and leave most of their friends in an aromatic blue cloud.  Recent auctions have put NS400R prices in the range of four times the original MSRP, but rarely with this example’s cosmetics and very original presentation.

What Could Be – 1986 Honda NS400R

With most riders expecting the best part of 200 hp per liter, later two-strokes of middling displacement are often treated like caged animals. This Honda V-3 doesn’t appear to have been babied, but does boast current California registration.

Honda acknowledged that the 500cc GP formula was not going to be won with the four stroke NR500, and returned to the podium with the NS500.  Wishing to capitalize on their success within Japanese regulations, they presented a 387cc race lookalike, which was brought stateside in a plain gray wrapper.  The surprisingly symmetrical triple had two forward cylinders and the third more vertical.  The bank of three 26mm Keihin carburetors are plumbed directly in from the top, with the outside exhausts riding underneath and the center taking a scenic underseat route to the license plate.  Even with Honda’s ATAC power valve, acceleration below 7,000 rpm is gradual, then a controlled explosion to the 9,500 rpm peak of 72 hp.

Thirty-plus years on, almost every bike will have some unknowable history.  This example has evidently received more attention on the mechanical side than to the out-front details that grab eyeballs.  Seems like doing about 10% of the required beautification would make a 90% improvement.  From the eBay auction:

Just serviced and ready to ride.  Has some cosmetic issues as can be seen in the pictures, but the previous owner installed a brand new engine which has less than 1,000 km or less than 600 miles on it, even though the odometer reads 26,296 km which is about 16,400 miles.  Odometer may change slightly as it is ridden occasionally to keep it in great running condition.  Starts easily and runs great, but needs new kill switch assembly.
Previous owner had installed a new engine, and we rode this bike a few times over the years, but with 60 bikes in the collection it did not get ridden very often. I had it completely serviced in August 2019 and new CDI units were installed (this bike uses two).  Just had the carbs cleaned last week so it is running fine.  The bike has a CA title and registration and I have it in hand.

The livery on this NS400R is similar to Honda’s GP works livery in the early 1980’s, when Freddie Spencer was quickly drafted from Honda’s AMA Superbike effort.  Spencer hit pay dirt in 1985, winning at Daytona as well as the 500cc and 250cc GP championships.  This NS400R has a lot of question marks – high mileage, engine change, and pictures that serve only to start a conversation.  But if some of those could be resolved, it might justify the owner’s reference to a high-dollar Mecum auction winner.

Nimble Welterweight: 1988 Yamaha FZR400

The Yamaha FZR400 has a fiercely devoted following as a track day and club racing darling, thanks to its unusual for the time aluminum Deltabox frame, screaming engine and lithe curb weight. You don’t see too many on the streets in this country, where big-bore horsepower has always reigned supreme.

That’s a shame, because they’re a fantastic option for a cheap and exciting weekend mount, with an easy-to-use chassis, reasonable ergonomics for such a small bike and legendary handling. They don’t shine as every day rides, as the peaky engine really doesn’t appreciate being lugged around in traffic, but when reserved for occasional blasts they’re a riot.

The 1988 Yamaha FZR400 shown here is in great shape for a warm-season alternative to your regular steed. Its OEM plastics are long gone, replaced by decent-looking replicas, so there’s no real incentive to baby this one. Throw it in the shed until the roads are warm and dry and go play.

This is a 1988 Yamaha FZR400. The fairing is aftermaket except for the tank cover which is OEM, it also has OEM mirrors and turn signal covers which are getting very rare.. The bike runs and stops well. The carburetors need some work, the bike is cold blooded and requires time to warm up before it runs well so that will need sorting. The front calipers have been rebuilt and the motor has NRC case covers, Pro Tek aluminum clip ons also I installed a new battery last year.There is a small crack in the right front fairing and a small section of the clear coat is chipped on the tank cover, please refer to the pictures. This bike has been sitting for too long, I don’t ride it and it needs to go to a good home. This is a 30 year old bike, it has its quirks but saying that the FZR400 is an excellent handling motorcycle and a blast to ride.

I am including a FactoryPro carburetor recalibration kit, ignition advancer, nickel plated stock replacement emulsion tubes and transmission detent kit, the roller has been installed but not the spring.Thats over $500 in spares.

The bike has attracted little bidding activity with a few days left in the auction and the opening bid set pretty close to what we would expect the bike to be worth. It does come with a pile of interesting spares and has seen very few miles, but north of $3,000 sounds like a lot for a 30-year-old 400.
