Habit Forming – 2013 Ducati Panigale 1199S with Zero Miles !

Hard to call a plain white Panigale an eye-catcher, but in this case it’s an S that’s never been on the road, apparently on display at a dealer.   A revolutionary clean sheet design at the time, this “new” Panigale would be a great performer even after almost 10 years on the carpet.

2013 Ducati Panigale 1199S for sale on eBay

With a cast magnesium bridging the headstock and engine mounts, the L-twin is an integral part of the Panigale’s chassis.  The superquadro engine’s bore is almost double the stroke, allowing 195 hp at 10,750 rpms.  Elliptical throttle bodies respond electronically to the twist of the proverbial wrist, and ride-by-wire describes what happens next, with computer controlled throttle response, suspension, traction control, and of course braking.  If track time beckons, the quick shifter and engine brake “slipper” will make your acquaintance, and the 2-into-1-into-2 exhaust provide audible feedback.

Often puzzling to figure what could bring a fan to chain up a beast like this, but even a dealer who knows that Ducati must keep innovating can succumb to the idea that this is the bike that will stop time.  Looks great though there certainly aren’t enough pictures here to verify.  Perfect as this unused example might be, the next owner will still have to request new Pirelli’s, though at least the cams are chain driven.

Beside the front tire size there’s very little in common with the previous 1198, but the 1199S has unmistakable Ducati looks, even in white semi-gloss.  No make offer button for this gem, and even though the eBayer has some 56,000 listings going, not too much detective work could open a dialogue with the owner.  Looks like this – dealer – has been repeatedly afflicted since a few other creampuffs are available, but this is the sportiest.

Rules Do Not Apply: 2014 Ducati SUPERBIKE 1199 SUPERLEGGERA

For years the top Ducati specification has been their R model bikes.  These race bikes for the road were released to appease the governing bodies of different organizations.  The rules stipulate that in order to qualify for the race, a specific number need to be produced to homologate them for racing.  The idea was to keep manufactures from creating an ultra low volume full bore race bike, selling a few, and then claim it was the road bike offering.  But what if the manufacture did not care about the rules?  What if this manufacture wanted to push the performance envelope and see what was possible?   Enter the Ducati Superleggera.

From The Seller’s eBay Listing:

For Sale No stories title in hand 2014 DUCATI 1199 Superleggera with only 1550 miles in perfect condition. This is 32 of only 500 stamped. If you are a real Ducati enthusiast, you can’t live without this machine.the most exclusive and extreme Ducati ever made with an unprecedented 200+ horsepower in homologated configuration and a 166Kg weight ready-to-ride without gas give it the best, by far, power to weight ratio of any homologated motorcycle.EVO tech radiator guards top and bottom, installed when bike was new, paint and radiator guard are in mint condition. BlipBox Auto up and down quick shift, CRG bar end mirrors- custom OE bar ends used Ducati bus charger connection in tail, Ducati lithium charger, integrated rear lights, 2x keys and Ducati manuals, Front Ducati OE stand rear Pitbull.

The listing is full of hyperbole and seems to not know that in the following years Ducati made a 1299SL and a V4SL.  To be fair, both of those bikes wore much higher MSRPs.  Another nit pick would be that the photographs in the listing are more suited to gain Instagram likes then  show a potential buyers the condition of the bike.

The 1199 SL used a substantial amount of magnesium and carbon fiber to shave weight.  The use of these exotic materials meant that no matter how many Ducati built, it would never be allowed to race in World Superbike.  Some period reviews made claims that this road bike weighed less and had a better power to weight ratio then some of the factory race bikes.

With the current bid just topping $10k there should be no expectation of a sale at that number, but it will be interesting to see where bidding goes on this.  Many low mile examples hit the market with eye watering asking prices.  There should be no doubt that these Superleggera models will always be desirable and over an amazing ride to a lucky few.

Featured Listing – 2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale S Tricolore

Update 12.6.2021: This bike has SOLD! Congratulations to buyer and seller! -dc

Despite its light weight and minimal monocoque chassis, Ducati managed to fit many firsts, extremes and superlatives into the 1199 Panigale S.  RSBFS reader Jason has a one-owner Panigale S is in the Tricolore livery with a few choice upgrades and just 1,457 miles.

2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale S Tricolore asking price $19,500

No longer suspended from a trellis frame, the Superquadro engine in the Panigale is a structural member, and a small but robust aluminum casting carries the adjustable headstock.  The subframe holding the single-sided rear suspension connects to the back of the engine, and the integral aluminum seat carrier is above.  In between there’s an all-new L-twin, with cams driven by a gear/chain combination, and extraordinarily oversquare cylinders ( 112mm bore and 60.8mm stroke ).  Mitsubishi fuel injection and ride-by-wire throttle are in control of 195 hp, with the help of multiple electronic aids.  With engine braking control providing slipper functionality, the wet clutch has been fitted with a quickshifter.  Monobloc Brembo calipers appear to be poured over their 30mm pistons, on 330mm rotors and of course multi-mode ABS.  Öhlins dampers and lighter Marchesini wheels are part of the S package.  Designers spent plenty of time in the wind tunnel optimizing the riding position and bodywork with the goal of a superbike easier to ride fast.

Jason is a principal at Northwest European, a specialty dealer of mostly the four-wheeled variety, but has prepared this Panigale S beautifully.  Their full description is available – here – , but following are their comments about this Tricolore –

This particular example is a spectacular original 1199 Panigale S sold new with factory original Tricolore livery. Having covered a mere 1,457 miles since new, the owner, an avid motorcycle enthusiast, has maintained and serviced this Ducati with the utmost care. As many motorsports enthusiasts will do, the owner selected several specially developed upgrades for this bike, all of which can be easily removed and returned to the original state should the new owner wish to do so – Racing ECU upgrade, exhaust, ASV levers, and a multitude of carbon fiber bits are among the highlights.

As one should expect with this example, the condition of this Ducati is nearly like new. Every aspect of the bike from the colorful bodywork, carbon fiber details, and refined mechanical features are polished, preserved, and properly maintained to factory specifications. The still original tires show minimal use while the brakes, disc surfaces, and drive chain are all in excellent condition.

This Ducati is accompanied by a factory owner’s manual, an un-assembled Tamiya scale model kit of this bike still in the box, a spare seat, spare body pieces, and other original parts that were removed from the bike and upgraded per the original owner’s preference.

Northwest European asks $19,500 for this Panigale S Tricolore, and Jason can be reached at (206) 355-7727 or via email at jason@nweuro.com

As much as a motorbike is a zillion details flying in formation, Ducati appears to have looked at each one carefully, but never lost sight of the goal of lightness and maneuverability.  With a dry weight of 362 lbs., that success was quick and easy to see.  Riding reviews said that the harder to measure combination of a slightly longer swingarm, rotating the engine back a few degrees, centralized mass, and moving the rider a hair forward made for a quick and forgiving superbike.   Contact Jason at (206) 355-7727 for more information on this 2012 Ducati 1199 Panigale S Tricolore.

Modern Ducati SL: The 1199 Panigale Superleggera

The search for speed and performance can be an obsession.  Something that consumes all focus and drives decisions about every aspect of the machine.  Much of the time this pursuit is limited to racing applications.  Teams spend untold amounts of money to go incrementally faster.  This purity of design is rarely seen on the streets.  With the Ducati Panigale line someone decided that the rules around production racing were severely limiting what was possible, so Ducati introduced the Superleggera.

Not bound to the homologation rules, Ducati was free to push the envelope.  The Panigale R was the homologation special, and gaining a reputation as an amazing performance machine.  Something that frankly few thought could be made better.  With the use of a magnesium frame, more carbon fiber and a few other choice parts the weight was reduced by 30 pounds when compared to the R.  That is an absolutely insane amount of weight to pull off of an already featherweight motorcycle.  Under 400 pounds fully fueled, the 205hp engine has no trouble firing the bike down the track at triple digit speeds.

While every other manufacture was focused on creating homologation special for the sole purpose of racing, Ducati was raising the bar by offering a motorcycle that did not need to conform to any rules.  Something on another level of focus and a class of it’s own.  Wonder what the other manufactures think of this Ducati Power move.

The Buy It Now price of $48,999 means this bike will be out of reach for some enthusiasts, but this was always going to be an exclusive offering.  The original MSRP was in the $65k range, and the current model has crossed the line into the six figure territory.  You are getting top tier performance and components for your money though, as well as a rare and desirable package.  The 1199 and 1299 were the end of the V Twin era for Ducati super bikes, so sure to be cemented as a current and future collectable.  Largely stock with the exception of a few tasteful and expensive add ons.

Spawn of Sausage Creature: 2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera

This 2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera has barely covered its break-in period, and comes complete with a boxful of accessories and two Akrapovic exhaust setups. And, if you’re so inclined, the option of a two-year warranty. On a 200-horsepower, 400-pound Scud missile. With a license plate. And turn signals.

2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera

It is nigh on impossible to avoid cliches when describing the 1199 Superleggera, as writers have been trying to come up with ways to describe ever lighter, ever faster, ever more mind-bending bikes since Harley and Davidson strapped their first thumper to a Safety Bicycle. Weapons analogies seem appropriate, though, as a race bike handled carelessly will have the same effect on you as any of Beelzebub’s evilest creations.

Even with three years under its belt, the 1199 is an amazing machine, carrying all but the final, infinitesimally small and expensive tweaks that Ducati’s WSBK steeds do. Though it will pass emissions and safely indicate a turn, this bike has very little business on a public road, needing only its first two gears to land you squarely in jail, or turn you into Hunter Thompson’s aptly-named creature.

The bike seen here comes from a dealer in California and is, for all intents and purposes new. Judging by the size of the chicken strips on the tires, it has rarely, if ever been ridden in anger. It comes from smack in the middle of the Superleggera’s production run, wearing number 294 out of 500 examples.

From the eBay listing:

2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera RARE SUPERLEGGERA – PERFECT

Extended warranty for 12, 24 or 36 months available at a discounted rate.

WOW! We are proud to have this rare piece of motorcycle history available for sale. The 1199 Superleggera is exactly what its name translates to in English – Super Light. Ducati’s performance recipe of lightweight and more power, and designed a machine that creates over 200 horsepower and has a dry weight of just 341.7 lbs., which is the same as Ducati’s WSB racer. Ducati created 200 new parts for this most exclusive slice of exotica, including a carbon fiber seat unit, titanium fasteners, a feather-light 700g lithium battery and revised electronics.

Ducati outfitted the 1199 Superleggera with a lighter, tungsten-balanced crankshaft, titanium con rods, and a lighter flywheel. Ducati also used aluminum cylinder liners instead of steel

With these enhancements, the 1199 Superleggera produces more than 200 horsepower. To tame this type of power, Ducati incorporated a host of electronics, including Ducati Wheelie Control (DWC), Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and Engine Brake Control (EBC). These systems are optimized “with new automatic calibration of rear-tire size and final transmission ratio.” Ducati also added a race-derived, handlebar mount to easily adjust the levels of these systems on the track.

Here is the chance to own the rarest motorcycle in the world and still save 1000’s.

You’re Not Worthy: 2014 Ducati Superleggera for Sale

2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera R SideThis weaponized Ducati Superleggera, resplendent in nuclear red paint that looks like it causes cancer to people standing near it is one of those bikes that lives up the hype. Many Ducati special editions have been a bit disappointing, unless you were looking for a living room decoration. All that carbon fiber added to the cost, but saved just a few pounds compared to bikes that weren’t all that light to begin with, and the upgraded suspension bits may have looked cool, but racers probably binned the original bits for even higher-spec parts before they hit the track, as the stock parts often looked better than they performed…

2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera L Side Front

But the Superleggera went on a truly ruthless diet. Yeah, the usual fairing panels were replaced with carbon as you’d expect. But then basically everything on the bike that could be lightened or replaced with lighter parts, was lightened or replaced with lighter parts. The updates were comprehensive, and include magnesium airbox/headstock, magnesium engine cases, lightweight internals, and a carbon-fiber subframe.

The result was a bike that weighed in, full of gas and still wearing lights and mirrors, at under 400lbs. That’s nearly 70lbs less than the BMW S1000RR, one of very few bikes that could outperform the stock 1199.

2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera R Side Rear

And it’s a screamer, too: I’m still getting used to the idea of a 1200cc v-twin that revs to 12,500rpm. That was four-cylinder territory until this bike came along. Pankl rods, titanium valves, and other lightweight internals all add up to a bike that puts out almost 190hp at the wheel, well over 200hp at the crank.

This is, quite literally, a World Superbike that’s completely road legal. Well, it’s actually a few horses short, but it’s also lighter than a World Superbike…

From the original eBay listing: 2014 Ducati Superleggera for Sale

The 1199 Superleggera is the most exclusive and desirable Ducati ever made. Materialized in magnesium, carbon fiber, and titanium, it boasts the highest power-to-weight ratio of any production motorcycle in history and will be produced as a limited edition of only 500 units. Discover all the details and in-depth information in the sections dedicated to materials, technology and mechanics.

2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera Triple Clamp

This bike is notable for being the lowest-priced Superleggera I’ve seen so far which, at $49,999.00 maybe isn’t saying all that much. This rock-bottom price might be because of the massive 2,500 miles this thing’s racked up since new… But it is nice to know these things are being ridden by some of their owners. I’ve even seen them on the road and in the canyons.

And ride them you should: after all, that’s perhaps the very coolest thing about modern motorcycles. We’re quickly heading towards Moto GP levels of performance on our streetbikes, and that would obviously be impossible for most riders to handle without some electronic aids to keep that killing power in check.

2014 Ducati 1199 Superleggera L Side Rear

Oh? You say you’re so good you don’t need that stuff? Yes you do. And that safety net means that you folks who are convinced you’re better than this bike are that much less likely to high-side yourselves into Low Earth Orbit, and there might be a few of these left for me at some point.

This one’s actually a bike I’d love to own at some point, once the prices drop. If they drop: I’m hoping for an F4CC sort of precipitous drop in values over the next few years, but that might just be wishful thinking…

The Price of Perfection: 2014 Ducati 1199 Panigale Superleggera

I’m not one to gush over a bike, and usually, this sort of thing doesn’t interest me: a limited-edition Italian superbike with tons of possibly pointless bling thrown at it, colorful anodized and blacker-than-black carbon everything, the slightly matte rainbow glow of titanium piping, all stuck to the bike to make it more “exclusive.”

But the Ducati Superleggera isn’t really that bike.

2014 Ducati Panigale Superleggera R Side

Many of these I’m sure will end up cocooned in heated garages, squirreled away in collections, never to turn a wheel in anger, except for an annual roll-out into the sun where they will sit, blinking dazed into the light, while they’re licked clean by owners too terrified to damage their investments and egos by putting miles on something this unforgiving. But these bikes were built to be ridden, not collected…

Normally, bikes like these are the province of Ducati-specialists NCR, who can actually improve your Desmosedici by making it both lighter and more powerful. But Ducati took a page out of NCR’s playbook book and just built their own nearly unobtainable special.

This is the superbike, perfected.

Not “perfected” like a BMW S1000RR HP4, with techno-geek sophistication and nods to everyman affordability, but with every part lightened, replaced, or improved in infinitesimal ways, cost-no-object. The frame replaced with… Well, it never had a frame to begin with, but the normally aluminum airbox/headstock is replaced with cast magnesium…

2014 Ducati Panigale Superleggera Subframe

The price for the finished bike? Well the Buy-It-Now price on this one is $66,995…

From the original eBay listing: 2014 Ducati 1199 Panigale Superleggera for Sale

Truly a once in a lifetime opportunity to own a piece of motorcycling history!!  With only 500 units being made worldwide and only 200 slated for the U.S., Ducati says once those are sold, that will be it for the Superleggera

The rest of the listing is just a reprint of specs. Which is sort of pointless, if you asked me, but what else is there to say? There’s no history for this example, with 32 miles on the clock. No mods, no customization, nothing but the window sticker, and some included “race” bits that includes an Akrapovic titanium exhaust.

2014 Ducati Panigale Superleggera Dash

Weighing in at 390lbs with a full tank of fuel, more than 70 pounds less than the aforementioned BMW, with 200 claimed horsepower at the crank, you’d have to add weight to be legal in any racing class. With no regulations to conform to, this thing is lighter than a World Superbike. In fact, it doesn’t meet the requirements for any race class. It’s pointless. It’s useless. It’s better than you are, better than you will ever be, a testament to the idea of speed.

These bikes aren’t friendly: the electronic aids aren’t there to help you go faster. They’re there to allow you to go faster, if you have the skill to exploit them.

2014 Ducati Panigale Superleggera Front Wheel

And I’m sorry, but I think we can safely say that you don’t. Honestly, you will probably be faster on that BMW: this isn’t some smooth, refined experience. It’s an animal. A brutal, terrifiying, hairy-chested thing. You must be THIS tall to ride this ride. Under 18 not admitted without parent or guardian.

2014 Ducati Panigale Superleggera Clutch Cover

Look, I was never really a fan of the 1198. While the 999 maybe took too many stylistic chances, the 1198 didn’t take enough: basically a modernized 916, it was sleek, but bland. The Panigale, on the other hand, looks like nothing else, and is much more exciting for going its own way. The Superleggera just turns the volume up to 11, to indulge in one last cliché.
