NSR Chameleon: 1992 HONDA NSR 250 SE MC21 For Sale
Gardner and Doohan wannabe’s, start your engines. Just as Lucky Strike paint catches a Suzuki mans eye, nice Rothmans paint work does the trick for NSR men. I don’t blame anyone for painting their bike in Rothmans colors, they look damn good and bring back memories of Honda GP dominance (unfortunately).
This one is a chameleon though, it didn’t leave the factory looking like a pack of Rothmans cigarettes. By the way, the seller is upfront about this and not trying to pull one over on you.
It sure looks good in pictures but paint always has to be seen in person. The seller states the bike is stock and has our favorite piece of governmental paperwork here at RSBFS. That would be a nice CA title for anyone riding the short bus.
I now it is minor but the front turn signals are not stock items. It looks like it is missing some back padding for the seat and the rear seat itself.
This one has me a little perplexed. The Ebay listing, lists the mileage at 12,000 miles. 34,781 KM’s converts to 21,611 miles though. You might want to ask about that.
Why do I have the urge to smoke?
I guess this is as good as time as any to talk about resprays. What I’m about to say is a general statement and does not pertain to this actual bike. Always be a little cautious when looking at a bike that has been resprayed. Every now and then it is done to hide the true condition of the bike. Be sure to look past the shiny exterior and compare the paint to the nuts, bolts, frame, hoses etc. Make sure they are all in the same general condition.
The reason I said that doesn’t apply to this bike is I’m not noticing any of the usual corrosion of a poorly maintained/stored bike.
The details:
For sale is my 1992 NSR250 MC21 2 stroke. This bike is all original and super clean, with a fresh top end. Bike runs perfect and needs nothing but a new good home. Fully street legal, all working lights horn etc. and CURRENTLY registered in CA. The bodywork is original but has been repainted in the SP Rothmans scheme, this is NOT an SP edition bike, it is however still a very rare bike especially this clean and this original and registered with proper paperwork. Title is in hand and bike is ready to go. The reserve on this bike is super low so it is listed to sell. I know what it is worth but with the economy market value has changed. I am open to serious offers so dont hesitate to contact me. Bikes this clean and rare are very hard to come by so take advantage while it is here. This is the only time I will be listing this bike.
So, what’s the price to live out your Rothmans fantasies? The seller has BIN of $6,500 to go along with the auction. I’m guessing in this soft market that BIN price is optimistic. The only bikes I’ve seen selling for top dollar currently are the true collectibles. That means low mile, original bikes of the rarest versions. Considering the year, mileage, model and market I’m thinking $4,500-$5,200. What do you think Honda boys? The seller claims the reserve is set quite low. To find out how low, place a bid here.
Ian
This bike is a total scam! It’s an R model and the seller is advertising it as an SE with SP bodywork. It’s not worth $4,500 on a warm spring day. Buyer beware!
Truth,
This bike aside, what do you think the average price for a clean, titled, early 90’s two stroke is?
From my experience an average (any brand) titled two stroke from the early 90’s will run in $4000-$5000 range.
The title is worth $2k. This bike is a bloody bargain for $4500. I have an original MC28 Rothmans that isn’t as clean as this. Also, I know Clint at AIP and he is a first rate mechanic and very honest (does the word honest really need an adjective?).
fwiw,
Joel
$2,000 for a title? Again, not on a warm sunny day my friend-
Average 90’s 2 stroke, with a title, should bring $5-6k with exceptional examples going from $6-8k. If it’s of the SP variety they should go for $9-10k, but then again, I’m a nobody screaming to those who’ll listen.
I forgot to qualify my above statement.
I consider this bike to be less than average with high miles and Chinese MC28 plastics.
Wasn’t it just listed on this site last month for $10,000? Nice to see honest people still around.
The bike has a salvage titile.
At $4K it be very cool purchase, esp cuzz i’d want to ride it to work at least once a week and enjoy it!! I agree title is VALUABLE, the hoops and luck I had registering my Canadian 86 GSXRLTD was worth over a grand to me…
I was under the impression that the plastics were OEM stock that were painted in the Rothmans scheme, not Chinese knock-offs. As for title value in CA, can’t put a price on it, but if you want to ride the bike, it would be worth $$$ to me.
First poster is correct in that this bike is an “R” model.
SE and SP came factory with a dry clutch which this on is clearly a wet clutch. They also came with adjustable front and rear suspension, which this one clearly does not have, where is the rear shock resevoir…
With those kms a fresh top end is nice, but I would say it is ready for a crank if it hasn’t been done.
my 2 pennies
I saw this today and it’s definitely an R with chinese plastics. I’d have to agree with Truethscreamer on this one. The plastics don’t fit together well. There are gaps where the plastics come together especially at the tail. I have them on one of my NC30’s and it bothered me enough that I bought an OEM tail off ebay. But it still is an NSR if you want to ride the wheels off it. If I had it I’d upgrade the suspension put another front end on it and it would a blast to ride but I wouldn’t be willing to pay much for this after seeing what else is out there. I’d much rather own that MC28 and just title it out of state. Now that is a sick two stroke.
^^^Collin – You’d better fix the dent in your NC30’s tank before bothering with the tiny gap in the bike’s Chinese tail. 🙂
Haha I already have another clean totally stock NC 30 with no dents in the tank but I’m still hunting around ebay for a matching red and white tank with no dents. Still nice to have one that’s a little beat up for my track days.
Keep the NC30 off the track!! It’s too nice. That’s why you have your Aprilia/CBR400 hybrid for . . . the track.
Collin – Your other stock NC30 doesn’t compare to your “California” NC30. I KNOW.
Hi
Guyz just to let you know Im the new owner of this bike. I just bought it last week & is currently in transit to its new home in fL
I got it for $5000
Im pretty happy with it considering I paid $7000 for my 92 RGV, which I sold for $8500

Congratulations,
dc
No prob, ill keep u all posted. 1st thing Im gonna do is the wire splice, to take the restricter out, then convert the forks over to inverted RFV400 forks. Tyga seels an aftermarket one just for this purpose, Im hopping Ill still be able use the stock wheel with some spacers mod’s & possibly be about to use the 400 6 piston calipers on there as well. Next Ill order a set of Jolly Moto chambers An HRC jet/needles kit Tyga readbox with carbon reeds, lightned flywheel mild port work thru Tom Morgan Racing & she should be good for 65 hp. Next step after that is to move up to the 300cc convertion sold thru Tyga aw well.. I will unleach the beast inside. 🙂 Ill keep everyone posted as the work gets done.
Be careful, you might just unleash a lot of flying metal inside the engine.
Just remember once you start modifying these bikes they can become a handful to get to run correctly.
As long as you are up for it, see what you can get out of it!
