Superbikes were ultra-competitive in the late 1990’s and Honda got only two or three years out of each re-design of their CBR900RR. The SC44 generation of 2000-01 gave away a lot of displacement to Yamaha’s fresh R1, but the CBR’s compact and lighter weight design proved their mettle. RSBFS’ friend Seattle Used Bikes has a super-sharp CBR929RR with a refreshing lack of mods and a long ownership and maintenance history.
2000 Honda CBR929RR asking $5,999
Hard to imagine re-engineering a superbike engine every few years, but at least Honda had the unquestioned knowledge base and financial stability. The 929 was a big update, even more oversquare with higher compression and PGM fuel injection, pushing a thousand more RPM on its way to 152 hp. Chassis and components kept up with stepless adjustments to USD forks, 330mm Nissin brakes, and 17-inch wheels front and rear. Factory splurges like the all titanium exhaust system kept weight under control. Fairing and ergonomics were a bit more generous than earlier CBR’s, with middling handlebar height and reach.
Evidently a SUB customer for several years, the owner of this CBR kept things nice and besides a complete lack of damage or corrosion, just a few mods are visible – lower profile blinkers, un-used frame sliders, and the triple-friendly key fob. Dave at SUB points out the new Dunlops and lighter muffler, and has these comments:
This very nice condition 2000 Honda CBR929RR has been owned by a friend for the past 10 years. It was the sportier Honda in the garage and over the first 5 years it saw limited use, maybe 500-600 miles a year. He then decided the time had come to take the Honda RR to its natural environment and signed up for a few track days, 4 total over the last 5 years. Oil was changed before each track day, last oil service was just last year. It is completely stock other than a basic slip-on. We made sure it got a fresh set of Dunlop Roadsmart 3’s, a safety inspection and a good clean up. This is a great running 929, we don’t see many of these, very typical rock solid Honda motorcycle. Come take a look and get ready to go have some fun! We have 2 keys and a clean WA title.
The price of this CBR929RR has been reduced to $5,999, and Dave at Seattle Used Bikes can be contacted on (206) 535-6812 or you can hold the bike with a deposit – here -.
The 929RR couldn’t budge the R1 out from under its crown, but in Sport Rider’s 2000 shoot-out, the CBR was just 5/100’s of a second behind at Willow Springs Raceway. The apparent inside storage has helped this example, and the move to fuel injection means that there’s no carb cleaning on the horizon. Since Honda mobilized their engineers to pursue the 954RR for 2002, the 929 had a short run, and isn’t seen regularly. SUB’s offering looks to have the desired pre-owned checklist items – garaged, very clean, and not too many owners, miles or mods.
