Introduced in 1986, the Yamaha TZR250 was the company’s entry into the fiercely contested 250cc sportbike class that was popular almost everywhere… except maybe the US. Here, there were no tax laws or licensing restrictions concerning displacement to encourage riders to buy these smaller machines, and interest in 250cc roadracing was limited. But bikes in the class was famous for their low weight, high technology, and supreme agility. Bigger machines could certainly bugger off down long straights, but the 282lb [dry] TZR250 could hold its own against any machine of its time in the corners. Powered by a two-stroke, parallel-twin engine featuring Yamaha’s proprietary YPVS or Yamaha Power Valve System that increased the midrange power of the peaky engine, and backed by a six-speed gearbox to make full use of its narrow powerband, the TZR250 is a worthy representative of this now-vanished class.

Up for auction is my super rare Yamaha TZR 250. Not many available in the U.S. Bike has been taken apart, cleaned, detailed repaired as needed, new paint and decals, fuel system, carburetors cleaned, new fluids. Super light (approx. 300 lbs.) and very agile and quick (approx. 50 h.p.). Great bike for vintage road racing or collecting. Speedometer is in m.p.h., not km. Everything in good working condition. Carburetors may require rejetting for your particular altitude. A large tub of extra parts is included as well as a factory service manual. Clear Colorado title with a 17 digit VIN combining the frame number and bike data plate.
Here is your opportunity to own a rare bike in very nice overall condition.
The included photos are of decent quality, but it’s hard to get an overall sense of the paint condition, given the distance and the overcast conditions. A few more detail shots would be appreciated. A comment about the tachometer might be nice to clarify what’s going on: it doesn’t appear to be running in the picture so, is it stuck at 3,000 rpm? Does it otherwise function normally? A quick message to the seller should hopefully clarify, if it’s a concern to a prospective buyer. The included extra parts are a nice bonus, as virtually everything for this bike will have been out of production for decades. All-in-all a very cool bike and a terrific machine for strafing the local canyon roads, assuming you live near some nice canyon roads…

I emailed the owner about the tach being at 3k rpm and the answer was the picture was taken when the bike was running.
