Today’s Ducati SportClassic 1000S is very far from stock, although it appears to be extremely well put together and includes very high quality componentry. In spite of the fact that Ducati’s line of SportClassic retro-modern sportbikes didn’t sell particularly well when new, other than a flurry of interest when the bikes were initially introduced, prices today remain high, particularly for the original Paul Smart replicas and the Sport1000 roadster that was styled to evoke the 750 Sport of the early 1970s. The early SportClassics were solo-seat only, a result of Ducati using swingarms with an unusual assymetrical design and an offset monoshock. Later bikes like this one used an even more retro twin-shock setup and did feature passenger accommodations. The SportClassics were never especially quick machines, although the 992cc “Dual Spark” engine makes very useable real world power and handling was excellent.

“Cafe racer style with MotoGP power and handling”?! Oh, the hyperbole! Let’s be honest: a two-valve Ducati v-twin is never going to make anything near MotoGP levels of power, even with a built motor and two whole spark plugs per cylinder… And, in spite of all the bling thrown at it, this Ducati SportClassic 1000S probably still weighs pretty close to the stock bike’s 414lbs dry weight. But that doesn’t make this machine any less special. Obviously, the $38,000 asking price is far in excess of what you’d pay for a stock example and offers very poor value but, if what you want is the ultimate SportClassic, you’d be hard-pressed to build one better.

I thought resetting odometer was illegal?
Advertising an odometer reset is pretty odd. But we will just have to take his word for it that it only had 2K miles. Which in Ducati land is believable, no one actually rides these bikes. They just wait a few years for the next “look a no miles example” sucker to come along and buy it…
