You’d be forgiven for thinking that, by 1991, all of the Big Four Japanese superbikes were pretty much following the same formula: aluminum beam frames wrapped around liquid-cooled inline fours… [record screech]. Not Suzuki: their seminal superbike, the GSX-R750 had, from its inception in 1985, been focused on weight savings and simplicity. In pursuing that goal, they felt that including water-cooling would add both weight and complexity. So, until the introduction of their 1992 “WN” model, they used an air/oil cooling system known as “SACS” [Suzuki Advanced Cooling System] to keep their sixteen-valve inline fours running smoothly. This 1991 model was the end of the line for the “oil-boiler” Gixxers and, although seller refers to it as a “Slingshot,” I was under the impression that it was only the 1988-1990 models that were called that. The nickname referred to a design quirk of the carburetors used on the bike, so it’s entirely possible the 1991 bike used the same components, as the 1991 model year updates appear to have been mostly focused on a significant, more aerodynamic redesign of the bodywork and fairing.

1991 Suzuki GSX-R750 Slingshot – Extraordinary condition. This bike is very close to 100% stock, and has the correct Yoshimura header and muffler that is also in beautiful condition. I only changed a couple things from stock: Replaced Fuel valve with a Pingel setup, smoked windscreen, and replaced rear turn signals with some original front turn signals which are shorter and look much better, 2.5 degree timing advancer, brighter headlamps. Comes with the shotgun seat cover / solo seat and the original second passenger seat and I have the original manual and it has the original under-seat tool kit. I will also include a bunch of parts that I have collected along the way. I bought this bike several years ago and have restored it in many ways. As soon as I received it, I pulled the head and completely rebuilt it with all brand new Suzuki original parts. I went through every piece of hardware and replaced everything that was is less than good condition with original Suzuki hardware. I rebuilt the carbs with original Mikuni parts and re-jetted all carbs with Stage 1 jets. This bike is beautiful and has just a few marks and blemishes that are pretty hard to see. Everything works correctly and it is an absolute joy to ride. It handles exactly as you would expect and has loads of power. I am going to be moving soon and want someone to get this bike who knows what it is and what they will have when they get it.
I’m generally more a fan of European sportbikes, but there are notable exceptions and the “slingshot” GSX-R750 Suzuki is definitely among my favorite Japanese machines, although I prefer the earlier, twin-headlamp bodywork. This example has obviously been ridden and enjoyed, but appears to have been enthusiast-owned and very well-maintained, with sensible, period-appropriate upgrades. Bonus: the frame isn’t polished! The $7,900 asking price might seem high, but prices have skyrocketed in recent years, and examples this nice are nearly impossible to find. Unless you’re looking for a garage-queen collectible, I don’t think you’ll find one much nicer.
