Never Better – 2004 Suzuki SV1000S

Suzuki jumped on the liter V-twin bandwagon in 1997, and though the fine TL1000S didn’t meet sales expectations, they made some changes and released the SV1000S in 2003.  This one-owner example has been tuned and personalized, but ridden only 3,000 miles.

While the vacuum-cast aluminum chassis looks beefy, a look from – inside – shows it is not solid, but a complex array of stiffeners, adding lightness and rigidity.  The 996cc twin has many changes from the TL1000S including forged pistons, lighter con-rods and timing chain.  The intake and valve train is optimized for its 75 ft.-lbs. torque – though peak power isn’t nothing at 123 hp.   Right-side-up forks and monoshock are multi-adjustable, and there is a steering damper and slipper clutch to help the big twin mind its manners.  Brakes are from Tokico and 310mm in front, 220mm out back.

This South Jersey owner has addressed every comment the media had about the SV1000S, and made several cosmetic updates as well.  A more open exhaust and accompanying Power Commander has allowed the engine to be heard, some reviewers thought it was too quiet.  Braided brake lines firm up the lever and pedal feel, and an adjustable steering damper has been added.  Suspension has been updated and tuned, and the supersport fairing has been made full with factory parts.  Not to mention a lot of blue anodized and carbon accents.  From the eBay auction:

The SV1000S could only long for the success of the jack-of-all-trades SV650, and though Suzuki could have presented a model as exciting as this owner’s, the cost probably wouldn’t have helped matters.  As offered, the bottom line is a little more than the usual 15 year-old Suzuki, but the new owner of this SV will have a basically new bike, itself a comprehensive update to the TL1000S, professionally updated in every important way.  It’s also one of a very few monoposto SV’s with full bodywork, its angular complexities downplayed by the dark blue color.

Featured Listing – 1989 GSX-R750 Slingshot

Presented in their alternate red and white livery, this K-variant GSX-R750 is ready to do battle at the next street cred concours. It has a careful 12,000 miles which is low, but more of a survivor than babied collector. Suzuki designed it with a laser focus on light weight and usable power, which made the GSX-R750 instantly popular.

Suzuki went seriously oversquare in the comprehensive 1988 revision, the 73mm bore and 44.7mm stroke allowing 13,000 rpm and 112 hp. Still air/oil cooled though, which eliminated weight and complexity. 36mm Mikuni carbs featured the asymmetrical slide hence the “Slingshot” name, beside the way it took off from the starting line. The alloy frame was updated, but continued with its lightweight and braced theme, carrying the engine lower than before. Cartridge forks were still right side up, and the Full Floater swingarm controlled the rear. Brakes were a more modern size with 310mm front disks. Without a spec sheet or caliper you can see the wheels are wider and noise is contained by a 4-into-1 exhaust.

The owner Scott’s comments:

If you’ve always wanted a really nice Slingshot here’s your chance. Red with white just under 12,000 original miles. This is a true survivor which is mostly stock other than the airbox and Supertrapp silencer. New battery just serviced all new fluids and carburetor cleaning/rebuild, new rear brake line, petcock, and cush drive. Everything including dash lights are in perfect working order, its ready to go for the new owner. It comes with a hard to find unpainted rear seat cowl along with a back of the gas tank bra. It’s a lot of fun to ride for a thirty-year-old bike. Rides very close to a modern bike and makes great sounds. It’s never been down to the best of my knowledge.

Here’s the back story, I bought it with the thought of turning it into a vintage race bike. When my friends saw it, particularly one that’s a GSXR nut, they convinced me it was too nice the convert. They were not willing to buy it but would not let me race it! So I found a Slab-side that was a better candidate. As I’m more of a track guy my street riding in next to zero nowadays so this has been sitting in my climate-controlled Man Town.

I like to sell bikes with no stories hence the recent service. I would rate this an 8 out of 10. It’s not a museum piece but a really nice original survivor that you will be proud to ride and turns heads wherever you go. There are a few stress cracks in the bodywork which is normal. There’s also a crack in the top right side of the fairing right underneath the throttle.

I’m a fifty plus year old you guy that collects bikes so I am quite picky and tend to understate a bikes condition. It’s registered in New Hampshire which does not title anything over fifteen years old, but I do have the previous owner’s title. I do not need to sell this bike so please don’t waste either of our times. I have a more pictures and happy to answer any questions. Thanks for looking!

1989 was the second year of the 2.0 GSX-R750, and small changes were made, mostly to increase available lean angle ! Otherwise it was a fitting second generation of a middleweight bred for the track, and a great value for the ante. Rather than a sheltered collector, this unrestored survivor could be enjoyed inside and out.

Suzuki Saturday – 1988 Suzuki GSX-R750

1988 brought the first comprehensive update to the 750 Gixxer, with a revised frame and shorter stroke engine, “slingshot” carburetors and 17-inch wheels.  A little heavier than the introductory GSX-R, the 1988 was still lighter than the competition and had the more rigid chassis and additional power to improve overall performance.   Looking very original and excellent for its 22K miles, this GSX-R750 has had some nice mechanical care as well.

In the engine re-design, Suzuki took 4mm from the stroke and added 3 to the bore, more oversquare and with lower reciprocating losses than before.  Peak power and torque are at 11,000 rpm, while the redline is at 13,000.  The high-volume SACS oil cooling system was also heavily revised, with larger, less restrictive tubing, and a 4-into-2 exhaust was required to limit muffler size.  Brakes and forks are built for the era, and dual headlight fairing has fresh air intakes running back to the airbox.

 

The Illinois owner of this GSX-R has preserved the cosmetics, and actively maintained the running gear.  Suspension has been updated in the rear, rebuilt in the front, brakes improved, and engine maintenance is up to date.  From the eBay auction:

The GSX-R750 reviewed as a quick-handling powerhouse, with serious racebike ergonomics, and very nearly beat the company’s own 1100 to the 1/4-mile traps.  A nicely resolved update to a ground breaking design.  This particular GSX-R is a win-win, great factory cosmetics and all maintenance issues addressed…

2nd Generation – 1989 Suzuki GSX-R750

Coming off 1988’s major re-vamp, the GSX-R750 for 1989 had the new frame, upgraded engine with slingshot carbs, revised fairing from the previous year along with a couple of tweaks to improve cornering clearance.  Would that it were an R or RK, but the base K model was a great ride, and could be very quick if suspension set-up was done individually.

Sporting the SACS ( Suzuki Advanced Cooling System ), the 748 cc motor uses a two-stage oil pump with oil routed past the combustion chambers and piston squirters to help maintain its composure as 13,000 rpm and 112 hp quickly approach.  36mm Mikuni flat-slide carburetors are helped by a shorter intake path, fed by ports beside the headlights.  The perimeter frame is welded up extrusions and forgings of aluminum, as is the swingarm.  Right side up cartridge forks are without anti-dive but adjustable for preload and rebound damping, as is the Full-Floater monoshock.  Stainless 4-1-2 exhaust is new for this year, though this bike has been fitted with a D&D 4-into-1 system.  Brakes are Nissin 310 mm fronts with four-piston calipers, with 230 mm rear.  Steering damper on the left frame is standard.  Though available set up for a passenger, this GSXR has the matching monoposto seat fairing.

Offered by a New Jersey dealer, this GSX-R750 looks excellent or better and claims only 1,407 miles.  Sharper eyes may see mods but I’m not.  None of the body faux pas look like accident damage.  From the eBay auction:

Incredible find.  1989 GSXR 750K, its an ICONIC sport bike and becoming highly collectible.  Its not only incredible that this bike still exists but its in really great condition too.  

Bike is ready to ride with fresh oil/Filter, brake flush, New Tires.
 
Bike comes with factory (VERY RARE) solo seat cover with bump pad and also included is the stock seat cover/tailight surround.
 
I have tried to detail most of the defects in the paint but certainly can not get them all so i concentrated on the most obvious ones.  I have not noticed any cracks at all in the body, even all the small tabs seem to be intact.  The wind screen is a bit marked up and most of the scratches can be polished out but I opted to put an original windscreen on the bike verses a flimsy cheap aftermarket one.

Though a production machine and not a rarity at the time, a road registered original like this is not seen often.  Claiming a substantial horsepower advantage over its competition, the factory made some ride-height adjustments and re-shaped the exhaust collector for 1989, resulting in a sharp handling powerhouse.  Since summer is here, any number of aftermarket windshields would serve the purpose while you polish the original or search out a new-old-stock part…

2000 Aprilia RS250 Street Titled & Registered In Illinois

This is a fantastic RS250 available in the Midwest!  Located in Chicago, Illinois is a 2000 Aprilia RS250 with 3,646 original miles.  The description is sparse but it does have all the important information:  Titled & registered, original street bike, and low miles.  This bike is originally from Germany and looks fantastic in the photos.  This bike also looks to be fitted with aftermarket expansion chambers and silencers.  The asking price is at the higher end–but I believe to be close to market correct especially moving into spring–at $9,750.  Doug posted a fist gen. with similar mileage that was in California for $8,300.  These RS250s are fantastic machines and I wouldn’t expect to see them depreciate due to lack of market demand.  These second generation machines (’98+) feature a 72bhp, two-stroke, V-Twin capable of pushing the bike to 130mph.  When released, the RS250 was tied with the Ducati 916 for the most ground clearance of a production machine and, at 309lbs, this bike can flick side-to-side as fast as the rider dares.  These have fully adjustable front & rear suspension, a dash that reminds you when services are due, rev light, clock, lap timer with storage for forty laps and a max. & avg. speed calculator.  The RS250 is full-size and will fit anyone accustomed to pretty much anything that ends in RR.  If I’ve sold you, which I hope I have, see this bike on Craigslist here.
