For Sale: 1972 Harley-Davidson XR750TT Road Race Replica
Here at RSBFS we generally stick with rare factory bikes; there are simply too many modified and hot-rodded machines out there to consider them all. Every once in a while we come across a custom build that is worthy of – or even better than – factory. This XR750TT replica build is clearly one of those cases. Even if you are not interested in the bike, check out the pics and enjoy the quality of this offering. You will not be disappointed.
Just because this mighty giant does not have factory paperwork does not mean it does not have real history. This very bike has been raced successfully in AHRMA and WERRA series, and has triumphed under the likes of none other than Jay Springsteen. If there is a guy that knows what a XR750 should feel like, I reckon that Jay is that man. Given that the bike looks killer, it is nice to know that it has the potential to run like it looks!
From the seller:
Here is one of the Hourglass Racing XR750TT racers that many of you have seen on the tracks over the years. It is, as all our race bikes are, in immaculate show winning condition. It is also ready for the track by adding oil and race gas. If you do a search on “Hourglass Racing” you will find a great deal of info on this bike.In the last few years it has been raced in AHRMA and WERRA road races. The riders have included myself, Chuck Davis, Tim Joyce, and of course most famously three time AMA National Champion and Hall of Famer, Jay Springsteen. Every rider has won races on this bike, with multi-time AMRMA champion Tim Joyce and “Springer” being the most successful. It has also been ridden in practice and parade laps on tracks throughout the country by the following racers: Mert Lawill, Mark Brelsford, and most recently at Road Atlanta by Chris Carr. Several journalists have also ridden the bike for articles about what its like to race an XRTT.
The bike was NOT born at Harley Davidson. It was assembled using parts and pieces, bought, found, and fabricated by many friends who were interested in seeing one of these bikes compete once again on American race tracks. The bike was built in the Hourglass Racing shop, and always maintained by us. The XR750 engine was bought new in boxes from Harley, and built by Carl Patrick in Ohio. Carl has always done our engines, and in our opinion, there’s no one better anywhere with an XR engine. This engine has done a practice session at Barber but no races.
This is a race ready showpiece that can win on the track or in any show. To build a racer of this quality would cost in excess of 70K not including your time. We have built three of these racers over the years, and until now, never sold one. If you want to own a piece of art, that you can win on the track or at a show, this is your bike. To verify this info do an internet search on Hourglass Racing, XR750TT, and/or Springsteen.
Springer can pretty much win major events riding a moped held together with duct tape and zip ties, but his history on this bike must have an impact on the collectability and indication of performance of this amazing build. This looks to be choc-a-bloc with top notch componentry, and the fit and finish look far beyond that of the usual historic race bike.
All of this quality, performance and history does not come cheap – but then a base XR750 is a pricey foundation to start with. This auction is going on right now, and the seller has set a BIN of $45,000. I would think it would be very difficult to source all the parts at that sum, much less put it together into a working, effective racer. Throw in the documented history of riders, and you have a very complete package for vintage racing and collection at a relative bargain.
Here is a great video of Jay Springsteen racing against the late Gary Nixon. Jay is astride an Hourglass Racing HD (it might be this very bike), with Gary seated on a Triumph 750. Some great stuff from those legends.
