Not every day you see a 996S with miles worthy of a touring bike, but today’s 996S has been around the world a couple of times plus. Sporting a comprehensive rebuild, this 996S looks excellent and has some nicer updates.
1999 Ducati 996S for sale on eBay
The first year of the 996 engine update was a 4mm overbore, and a passel of new ponies from under the minimal trellis chassis. The cooling system still required extra care, but a re-designed charging system made for better reliability. Better dampers accompanied the S-variant, and a 190mm width rear tire seems to have been a bit of spec-sheet engineering. Now traditional, the dry clutch reviewed as requiring a strong pull, with a healthy slip to launch thanks to high gearing. On the monoposto, no extraneous footpegs spoil the lines of the rear.
Almost no matter the manufacturer, a V-twin superbike with so many miles is expected to have an engine rebuild, and after 2,500-ish miles it should be past any infant mortality. Though most 996S’s would presume to have a numbered plaque, Öhlins forks plus carbon side covers and mudguards, this example looks the part in every way. Liking the polished exhaust and many 996’s have had the second pair of fuel injectors disabled to improve everyday riding. Comfy though they are, pink grips might have to go. Those rotors may look pretty, but they are very functional. For me, they were the difference between brake fade on a 95F track day or not. Worth double the money, IMHO.
Those grips are certainly…….’interesting’.
Very handsome bike. Ecept for the pinkies any way. Easy fix. A tempting offering for a rider.
