Update 8.1.2013: Originally spotted in February, this RG500 had an opening bid of $13,200 with no takers. It’s back and has an opening of $10,500, and I believe no reserve. Thanks for the heads up Mike. Links updated. -dc
Ah, the RG500. This is one of the most lusted after rare models posted on RSBFS. With its square four configuration and two cranks, the RG was patterned after the Suzuki 500cc GP bikes of the day. That day was long ago, and that day did not include the United States as part of the plan. Thus, nearly 30 years later these bikes are scarce and getting expensive.
1985 Suzuki RG500 Gamma
From the seller:
1985 Suzuki RG500 RG 500 Gamma, similar to the RG400 and RZ500, 4 cylinder 2 stroke, 2 crankshafts, rotary valve induction, awesome rare collectible, king of re-sale price, better investment than a mutual fund. I have to part with one of my RG500’s. 99% OEM stock RG500 parts except for Lance Float Valves, Lance filter, larger jets to match filter, mirrors, and Lance aux fuel petcocks. In my humble opinion the jets, petcocks, and filters are all the gamma needs. Cant describe the power band and the feel and sound. Japanese spec front turn signals are new NOS. The mirrors are Belgian spec copy’s, not shown, gsxr mirrors are on the bike now. The stock exhaust looks like exc. Don’t know the miles as the speedo is not original. Can supply stock air box and jets if wanted. Been repainted stock colors, gas tank never been cremed, no rust, wheels straight, frame straight, non original speedo has 25000 km or 16000 miles, new brake pads and masters front and back. Bike runs awesome, new suzuki 1st over top end with suzuki gaskets, inspected the rotor valve anti friction layer, and its perfect, motor is very low hours overall. Cassette transmission and clutch was also inspected and is perfect. Stock clutch and shifting is excellent. Fairly new Bridgestone battleaxe tires. Unlike most of the gammas that are in dis-repair, this one needs nothing. All the bodywork is OEM and in good condition for being 27 years old, no cracks dents or damage. I have the bellypan, I don’t mount it because I don’t want to damage it. Clear Vermont paperwork in my name, can be registered anywhere I believe, but check with your DMV.
The problem with collectable bikes is that lust often takes over as the sixth sense. This can be dangerous, as the mouth waters before the eyes and brain realize what is headed their way. When it comes to rare and desireable motorcycles, RSBFS always recommends doing your homework, asking LOTS of questions, and asking for additional photographs when it comes to areas of concern.
I really want to like this bike (this guy has three of them, after all), but if I were to bid on this one I would have to ask a few questions. For example, if this is 99% OEM stock, why was it repainted, what happened to the original speedo/odometer, and why are there two sets of mirrors (neither stock Gamma units)? The Lance parts are nice indeed, and the new top end is a good thing if the mileage indicated is correct or close. The fact that the bike is in Florida but titled in Vermont may be just a paperwork thing, but if you live in a state where these things are tough to register you might want to do your research first. If this all checks out, this could be your golden opportunity.
This auction just started and the opening ask is $13,200. That is higher than we have seen most auctions start out at, but in today’s market a good Gamma is worth that and more. It will be interesting to see who jumps in and how soon. For all the details and pictures, click the link and jump over to the auction. Is an RG500 on your bucket list? Let us know!

I really want this bike but the speedo, repaint and the lower not mounted all make the spidey senses tingle. If it was crashed and repaired I wish that would be stated right up front. I know they are rare, but dam $13,200 to start?!
Lust is an expensive flaw…
I am the seller and I am stating negative aspects of the bike that could be easily “not mentioned”, speedo, repaint , out of state title, etc. I dont want the buyer to have any surprises. Perfect feedback for 12 years selling old 2 stroke bikes on ebay. Feel free to contact me and ask questions. The bike was never crashed, speedo replaced with one that works, I cant load the bike on my trailer with the lower cowl on, so I always leave them off. It was repainted because the original paint was old, scratched and faded.
Welcome to RSBFS, Dave. Thanks for taking the time to explain the concerns. We hope the bike finds a good home!
Please, please, PLEASE check on the ability to register this bike in your state. I have a 2 stroke registered in Vermont, and I live in CA. There is a reason for this.
I can provide a Florida title or the Vermont one, it does not matter they are the same thing! All bikes more than 25 years old are exempt from all DOT and EPA laws, tired of people making ill informed comments! All gammas are completely legal in the USA! if they are 25 years old!
