According to Tad, these can be “a great tool for terrorizing your local back roads”, lol.
“Spanish motorcycling manufacturer Derbi is largely unknown here in the US, but the company has long and storied racing resume, with a number of World Championships in the smaller displacement classes. The Derbi GPR50 Malossi Replica or “Grand Prix Replica” was the company’s first fully-faired roadbike, a learner-friendly 50cc machine with oddly sophisticated specifications: it featured oil-injection and liquid-cooling for the little two-stroke engine, a six-speed gearbox, an aluminum twin-spar frame, 17″ wheels, and upside-down forks. The big-bike styling and tiny engine meant plenty of space under the “gas tank” that can be used for storing groceries or a helmet, with the actual fuel residing in a centrally-mounted fuel cell, with filler access under the locking pillion seat. Stock, the engine is good for just 6hp and 65mph, although the bike’s light weight means surprising performance. In the corners, anyway…
..Designed as an entry-level machine for European riders, this Derbi GPR50 is obviously pretty underpowered for most American roads and our one-size-fits-all licensing system. But these do show up from time to time for sale here, and generally don’t seem to go for very much money. With just 20 miles on the odometer, this one might need a bit of work to get it road-worthy, but performance parts seem readily available and affordable. Just slot in a 75 or 80cc big-bore kit for 10 whole horsepower, and go tear up your local go-kart track.”
Good luck to the buyer and seller!
