For Sale: 1990 Yamaha FZR400
In deference to the far-away bikes I have posted recently, here is a little gem tucked up in the wine and avocado growing region of Southern California. The FZR400 has been a staff and fan favorite for a long time, including the racebike of choice for RSBFS contributor Doug (we miss him, but I called dibbs on his office!). With good power and razor-sharp handling, the lightweight FZR is also a great bike for the wife or significant other, and a reliable track day favorite.
This baby Yamaha has some miles under her belt! Thankfully, these bikes are known to be fairly bulletproof, and the seller has indicated that some major maintenance has been performed on this ride. The bike has also been upgraded/updated along the way, including some tasty suspension and braking enhancements that would suit a track day rider just fine!
From the seller:
1990 FZR400 ready to ride, lots of mods on this one. Top end was done less than a 1000 miles ago and this is one strong running 400. I have a stock 89 and this 90 is so much more high strung and peaky. Has a rear Penske shock,
updated front calipers, braided front lines and a radial master cylinder. Bridgestone Battlax BT090 tires. NRC left and right engine covers and 1990 FZR600 carbs and 520 chain conversion. Doesn’t have deltbox swing arm (has 88-89). I don’t need 2 FZR400’s so this or my wife’s 89 needs to go. Bikes is plated and titled in Ca, ready to go. This would make a great track bike or ride as is on the street.
From the seller:
This is a 49 state bike and just has the EXUP tail from a CA. bike. I will include the extra tail piece with the bike if it sells. The top end was just done before I bought the bike last summer and the owner was frustrated with a carb issue. All the valves and springs where changed and I have the old parts. The original carbs had bad diaphragms so I replaced the carbs with a clean set from a 90 FZR600. They are the same 32mm size but have flat slide diaphragms instead of round. I don’t know a lot about the FZR400’s but after riding one last year I bought the only 2 that where around at the time. I’m building a 72 Kawasaki H2 and a Honda CB900F cafe racer and just don’t have room in the garage.
The good, bad and ugly of this bike is really in the details. As a model line goes, the FZR400 lineage is all goodness – a great frame, strong motor, and ergonomics that suit riders of many sizes. This particular example has seem more mileage than most, and has been through a few owners and a few mods. These need not be deal killers, however, depending on your needs.
400cc bikes will always be peaky, and to extract the most from them will require the upper register of the tach. The pipe will exacerbate this to a degree, as will the flat slide carbs. It is not clear if jetting remained stock or was changed (the pipe likely necessitated a change), but most of these pieces point to more power at a higher RPM. Maybe not perfect for a new lady rider, but great for the track!
This bike is available now, and interest has been moderate. While not as unmolested as some that we have seen on the pages of RSBFS, this one still looks the part and has some decent upgrades as well. The current bid at time of this writing was just over $1,000 with reserve still in place. These FZRs have been $3k-$5k bikes lately, and I would place this one closer to the lower end of that range. Fair money for a great bike! To check out the auction, click the link and make the jump. And to prove the track worthiness of the little Fizzer, here is our very own Doug ripping it up in his glory days. Good Luck!

^The definition of an oxymoron^ Glory Days- Hell yes! Ripping it up- LMAO!
Much appreciated, but this is the funniest thing I’ve heard in quite a while. Hell, I’m still laughing….
Thanks for the write up on our FZR400, it’s such a fun bike. FYI the carbs have been jetted for the exhaust too.
Thanks for the comments Ron. I’ll bet that bike it is a blast to ride. Good luck with the sale!
This is myold bike did all the mods and the top end. Good to see others enjoying this little gem. Hope it goes to a good home
