East Peoria, IL – 10,714mi – $3,549 No Reserve
It’s been a while since we have seen an FZR400 here on RSBFS and that makes me sad. I love these bikes and to me they represent what RSBFS is all about. What they represent is a combination of performance, classic sport bike looks, and the rare and exoticness that people like me, and most of you, will drool over.
There is a reason that this bike is still considered one of the best handling bikes… because they are. And how does a 59hp inline-four blasting its way to 14,000rpm sound? Sounds great to me! You get all of Yamaha’s trick goodies of the day including, but not limited to, the EXUP system, widening the power band. All tucked into a lightweight package and covered in classic late-80’s Yamaha graphics.
The particular bike for sale right now looks next to as clean as you could hope for. Aside from some lower fairing issues from the bike being tipped over, it’s hard to spot any outstanding issues. I have seen lots of these that are thrashed and/or converted to track use with a 600cc engine in there.
From the seller:
THIS IS A RARE FIND. 1989 YAMAHA FZR400W. I PURCHASED THIS UNIT LAST YEAR FROM A COLLECTOR WHO WAS THE THIRD DOCUMENTED OWNER. I HAD THE INTENT OF KEEPING IT FOR YEARS HOWEVER I AM RUNNING OUT OF ROOM AND SOME OF MY TOYS MUST BE SOLD. HERE IS THE HISTORY ON THE UNIT:
This is a VERY rare find, an unmolested, never raced, lovingly cared for, garaged, 2 owner, bone stock Yamaha FZR400.
How this one never made it to the track still bewilders us, we have built and raced these bikes since the late 80′s and have a vast amount of spares along with of wealth of info and support to go along with the purchase.
*Full history and All documentation comes with bike*, Purchased new in 1991 for $4300 by an older gent, he started a binder of info and service records that are pictured. Including the original invoice and setup sheet. He sold the bike in the early 2000 to a hot Asian Med. student in Md.
She used the bike to learn how to ride and commute to Med school in Baltimore. In learning how to ride it has fallen over and shows minor scratches on the air intake of the lower fairing. Not crashed or thrown down the road,,,IT FELL OVER. The mileage is accurate and low because she lived in the city close to school.
Now a famous (still hot) Doctor she has no time ride or risk messing up her pretty little surgeon hands.
So thats how we ended up with the bike. There are no stories here it’s all documented and 100%.
It had been sitting for a while so we took care of a Full Service and safety ck, inc.
New Bridgestone tires,EBC brakes,EK chain, plugs, all fluids changed. Carbs were cleaned and rebuilt and a new battery installed. It runs as it should and needs nothing. Except a new owner.
Sold only to a good home! please no kids who are gonna try to put a 190 tire on the back or wack some flush mounts on it.
This is a collector quality piece and will make a great scoot for you or your significant other.
We typically see these bikes in similar condition for sale from about $4,000-$4,500, with the price increasing with lower mileage and more pristine condition. I could easily see this bike pushing the $4.5k mark given its current state. Let’s face it, these bikes are damn cool and they aren’t making anymore ’89 FZR400’s. If you got to have it, you can check out the auction here. But you better act fast as there is only a couple days left.

I’ll agree it’s a nice example, but it is not 100%. The upper fairing is missing the red stickers, the windscreen is not OEM and it’s also missing the turn signals block off plates. The stickers and windscreen are no longer available from Yamaha and the block off plates were getting hard to find. Obviously, new stickers can be made, but the other two items are Elvis.
Ooops, I hit submit before I was finished-
With the upper fairing missing the red stickers an block off plates any perspective “serious” buy should investigate if it is an OEM upper or after market resprayed. A few years back I purchased the last OEM white upper being shown on dealer inventory. Now, that’s not saying there aren’t some still floating around, but at that time it was the last one in dealer inventory available for the 1WG.
I have the same bike. Mine has 11k miles. Nice to see the price rising on the FZR’s
Ah thanks Doug, your knowledge is far superior to mine. And that upper fairing did seem a little off to me when I saw it. Shame on me for not investigating further. I’m not worthy. 🙂

You can still get the plates if you search. I had to buy new ones for my 88. I have two FZR 400’s. A 1988 that is MINT and a full blown 1990 race bike. Glad to see there still are a few around. I’ll never sell my 1988.
I’ve owned too many not to recognize the little things on my beloved 400’s.
The one cool thing about this one is that it appears to still have the original grips.
I’m just mad about the one that had 815 miles on the clock that was less than an hour away from me last year. 🙂 -JS
Good call on those details Doug. I bid on this one and called the dealer back east who was a very straight up sounding guy. What a bitchen little bike.
At least, he could have written his own description instead of copy/pasting ours, of the same bike.he even used some of our pic’s.
When we sold it, a client in Florida bought it,dunno how it got out to Ill.
Doug I’m surprised you didn’t catch it,you busted my balls about the upper and signal surrounds,,,remember 😉

This must be a very fetching Asian Female Doctor, given that she’s been mentioned in all of the listings’ descriptions.
Any provenance on that aspect 🙂
Sold for $4,700 on a last second bid. -JS
Sold to a hot Asian woman is actually in the description? Bike guys sure love women who ride bikes. My gf used to borrow one of my bikes to commute but gave it up because she got sick of guys trying to talk to her everywhere she went. Not very classy there guys…
