SELLER
Classic ’89 Yamaha FZR 1000 sport bike in excellent condition with 9757 original miles. The bike has always been adult owned, lightly ridden, and runs great. It has never been down, retains all of it’s original plastic panels, and is stored in a climate-controlled garage. Cycle World magazine awarded the FZR 1000 “Bike of the Decade” honors back in the day.
Extensive documentation includes an original bill of sale, parts and service receipts, registration certificates, and an owner’s manual. A few period correct modifications include a Vance & Hines Powerpack and a SuperTrapp slip-on muffler. An optional factory solo racing seat and Yamaha bike cover are also included.
Under my ownership, the carburetors were rebuilt and synchronized, the front and rear brake pads were replaced, new filters installed, and the fuel lines were replaced. The oil is changed annually using Yamaha branded oil and filters, and the brake fluid and anti-freeze have also been periodically drained and replaced.
The paint and body work show very well, but a few scratches and scrapes are evident mainly on the front fender and lower fairings. Also, both wheels have chipping on the polished finishes. Currently, the only thing the bike needs is to have the tires replaced, primarily due to age. I figured I would leave this decision to a prospective buyer as most people tend to have a personal preference when it comes to performance tires. This bike would make a great classic ride, as well as a necessary addition to any comprehensive sport bike collection from the late 80’s/early 90’s.

Looking back through our archives, we have seen a few of these pop up over the years. Besides the rarity of seeing one in good condition with under 10k miles, and the fact that Red loves screaming fast Japanese sportbikes, anytime I see original manuals the scrolling stops. It is just plain cool to have the original paperwork.
Back in 2018 RSBFS featured an ’89 FZR1000 that sold faster than we could even post the article! Tad shared some great insights, “Considering that Yamaha’s FZR1000 makes just 20 more claimed horses and weighs nearly 40 pounds more than a modern R6, you might think that these old-school machines would be no match for even a much smaller machine from today. But it’s the 79 ft-lbs of torque from the FZR that makes it so effective: a modern literbike like the BMW S1000RR makes just a few more foot-pounds. So how did they do it? Well the GSX-R1100 obviously benefited from a few more cubes, but the smaller 1002cc FZR1000 combined Yamaha’s five-valve Genesis head with their EXUP or “Exhaust Ultimate Power” valve to provide both low-end torque and high-end power.”
“Five-valve heads have pretty much disappeared these days, the theoretical advantages proving insufficient to outweigh the additional complexity required, but EXUP-style exhaust valves are ubiquitous, now that Yamaha’s patents have expired, allowing other manufacturers to take advantage. By the late 1980s, servo-operated “power valves” were common on two-strokes, but this was the very first use of the technology in a four-stroke, and the result was a very flexible engine with a 170mph top speed.”
Good luck to the buyer and seller!

Neat to see a classic for sale. Definitely rare.
not a fan of polished aluminum. Life, the rideable season, and non-working days, are too short for that kind of maintenance crap.
no mention of the front end swap on this. Guessing it is from a later model FZR. Not sure when Yamaha upgraded to the 6 piston caliper (as an identification aid). But that bodes well for serviceability and hopefully a less cobbled together setup.
@Michael. Guessing the front end swap would have been from either the ’94 or ’95 model as I believe the brakes were upgrade beginning with the ’94 model
1991 brought inverted forks. 1994 added the six piston calipers.
