While the 851 is generally looked down upon compared to the later evolution of the 888, there’s no denying that one that has existed for 25 years without ever being fired is something to take note of. This example is in Australia and according to the description has been recently uncrated for photographs and is suitable for a museum. Buy it now price is $33k.

I know folks in Perth are prepared to pay more for things but 33k for an 851 seems like a lot
Alot of interesting bikes seem to be in Australia. I’ve read the Aussies think the sales prices on used bikes in the U.S. are dirt cheap. So $33k may work for them, just sayin’.
Marty, it is a lot but where else you going to find another example like this? I have an 851 sp with 750 miles and I wouldn’t sell it for $32K, wouldn’t find another one…
Marty..My friend…l have known you a loooong time…But l have to say…you have your head up your arse again….
If l had the coin l would snap it up in a minute…
always nice to hear from friends here on RSBFS 🙂
Regarding price, I truly hope the seller gets it. But given that there are 3 other 851 for sale right now (2 are on gumtree and one on ebay us), I would say its going to take someone who collects zero miles/crate bikes. Anyone who wants one to actually ride is probably going to go for one of the others.
Prepare for an influx of “exotic motorcycles and cars” as the arse falls out of the mining industry in Western Australia. The price of iron ore[which keeps that state alive]has fallen below $70 dollars a tonne on the international market.Seventy dolars a tonne is the break-even point for most mining companys.Jobs are already being lost and expansion projects cancelled.Still, their loss will be be the other states gain.Name your price and stand firm.
Definately….that’s still a bargain for us.Then again,we don’t work for tips.
Marty, Australians used to think bikes in the US were cheap because of dreamers like this. Now the old bevels are as expensive elsewhere, if not more so, and it’s the good ol’851’s turn. If you what a good cheap 80s Ducati there is only one place left….and it ain’t Oz, especially not West Oz.
Prepare for an influx of “exotic motorcycles and cars” as the arse falls out of the mining industry in Western Australia. The international price for iron ore is now trading below $70 dollars a tonne. And seventy dollars a tonne is the brake even point for the mining industry in Australia.Jobs have already been lost, and there are more layoffs to come.Future projects have been cancelled.Australia was the only country in the western world to dodge the GFC….it just didn’t happen here. But the party is coming to and end.The Aussie dollar has dropped from $1.10 to $0.82 in just 24 months. You are going to see a lot of material junk come onto the market from sellers in Western Australia over the next couple of years.
Lots of things to do with large amounts of money besides spend it on non-running motorcycles that aren’t that good looking compared to others of the same make and time period.
I love the 851 and 888 series bikes. This one definitely qualifies for a premium price – I prefer an 888 SP4 for that kind of money (even if it had 10k miles on it – but well taken care of) – when I was selling my 91 851, people would comment that they could get a newer 748 for that kind of money! I had to tell them to go look for a 748. The 851 was like an F40 of motorcycles. Goodluck with the sale.

THAT’S NOT A KNIFE, I spent a great deal time in Australia three years ago and considered moving there, however I predicted the same thing, would happen to their economy as it did ours and really didn’t want to live through that twice. Their economy is surely a bubble about to burst and when talking with the locals I said, “you guys are making all the same mistakes we made in the state”.. and of course they were all in denial as we were in 2008.
Hope we’re wrong for their sake, and Eric, if you can spend $32k on a bike you can already do the other things in life. There are lots of none running unattractive motorcycle cycles worth a pile of money.
Spare me the ill informed doom and gloom economic forecast Piehead. Have you spoken to Andrew Mackenzie, Sam Walsh or Twiggy and got the skinny on their bottom line because I can assure you they are all very different. What a stupid half truth comment about the Iron ore proceeds propping up WA therefore there will be heaps of toys for sale. You forgot to add that WA is also propping up the rest of the country……..so what the whole countrys going down the shitter ? “Name your price and stand firm?” You know little about bikes and less about Australias economics. Stick to knitting and late night romcoms with the ladies matey.
Kill Bob…Kill…
Maybe you should get stuck into these guys as well……

Don`t get me started Piehead. Your naivety is pushing new boundaries. You actually swallow what the media spits out ?
Australia is in strife for a number of different reasons – not just falling worldwide commodity prices. ( I am not usually a conspiracy theorist but I suspect there is also some price manipulation going on with the big 3) The 6 year Krudd/Gillard fiasco cost the country over 700 billion. The previous Libs with Costcutto had Australia with a significant budget surplus and over 50 billion in our futures fund. We are now almost a trillion in the red and the outgoing labour idiots justified it by saying there are plenty of nations worse off than us ?????? Yeah that may be true but they have over 10 -15 times our population and a capacity to pay it back. Put very simply, with very cheap interest rates we are spending more than we are earning and at some point the ledger needs to be squared. I`m not saying “big ears” is the answer but he has stopped the bleeding that the previous govt orchestrated. Now about that bike……………

“Thank you Your Honour. No further questioning.”

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt.
Nicely put Bob. And, gosh, thanks for proving your own little aphorism.
