RSBFS
In the past 15 years we have only posted three of these bikes. The most recent 1987 TZR250 on RSBFS was written by Donn in 2017. “A follow up to the very successful RD line, the TZR250 1KT was the very first generation of Yamaha’s liquid-cooled parallel twin sports machine introduced in 1986, and was also referred to as the “2MA,” depending on the market. It was definitely a big jump ahead in terms of performance compared to the RG250 and NS250R of the same period, and pretty much set the template for the class: aluminum beam frame, fully-enclosed bodywork, and a six-speed gearbox. Unlike other bikes in the class and even the later TZRs that used an 18″ rear wheel, the 1KT had 17″ wheels at both ends.”
We know you love two strokes. Tell us why this two stroke is cool. What sets it apart from the others?
And good luck to the buyer and seller!

Very nice TZR! But, it is not a JDM 1KT, actually a Canadian market 2ME. Although the windscreen is marked as a 2MA from Yamaha, all 2ME’s had this windscreen. The give away as to the bikes origins are the Canadian spec mirrors and turn signals. And likely the Canadian paperwork. Produced for the Canadian market for one year only. I own on myself, but I swapped the mirrors, front turn signals and rear tail light/turn signal assemble for JDM 1KT as they are much more asthetically pleasing (and how the bike was designed to look by the Yamaha engineers!)
Hi Tim! My name is John and I believe you purchased your TZR from me years ago (from Abbotsford BC). Great bikes. Hope yours lives on for many more years! Cheers. John
This bike is, as Tim says, a Canadian spec 2ME. Easily identified by the Canadian spec clocks, mirrors, signals, reflectors on front side fairings and switches. The VIN provided by the seller isn’t correct for any TZR250. 1987 Canadian Spec TZR250s start at VIN HA000101. My mint low kilometrage 2ME is VIN 133. I’ve only seen a couple of 2MEs with higher VINs. Very few sold in Canada in 1987, the only year available in Canada, likely due to the $6000 Cdn price. Note that there is a significant piece of the upper of fairing missing from the right side where the mirror mounts and then towards the rear. Look where is says Yamaha 2MA on the screen and you’ll see the piece missing and the empty fastener hole in the screen. Looks like about 4 inches is gone. A very common issue with these bikes. The fact that the seller doesn’t mention it and doesn’t show any photos of the inside of the fairing on that side should raise concern for potential buyers. It comes across as more than an oversight. If you ask the seller, also ask why the mirrors are on the wrong sides and upside down.
