Long after emissions legislation made Aprilia’s RS250 verboten here in the US, two-stroke fans were able to sample forbidden sportbike fruit with the diminutive Aprilia RS50, as the tiny engine allowed it to be classified as a moped. But don’t let that fool you: the bike is a tiny sportbike in every other regard, with a six-speed gearbox, a monoshock aluminum beam frame, 17” wheels, and disc brakes at both ends. Snarling, smoky motive force came from a liquid-cooled, two-stroke Minarelli AM6 engine displacing 49.7cc. The bike weighed in at around 200lbs dry and top speed was around 55mph. Performance parts to boost engine and suspension performance are available in Europe, as these were raced, if you’ve a mind to make this into more than just a display piece…
Up for sale is a very clean and rare Aprilia RS50 with only 1500 miles on it. Stored inside my home on display with other rare 2 stroke street bikes. Full size bike, 6 speed manual transmission. Comes with both keys and books. Some marks on right side decals as shown in photos. Clean title in hand ready for transfer.
These little Aprilia RS50s pop up from time to time and remain much more affordable than the much bigger, more capable RS250s that captured the imaginations of both racers and wannabe racers alike in the late 90s and early 2000s. Obviously, the tiny displacement of the stock bike limits performance, although there are 70cc kits that could make this into quite the little back-road funster, giving an owner the potential to capture a bit of the bigger bike’s performance to go with the obviously appealing style.
