Throughout most of the 80s and 90s, anyone interested in serious sporting motorcycles was largely forced to deal with bulky fairings, cramped ergonomics, and clip-on bars. Unfaired or “naked” motorcycles were generally also-rans, in terms of outright performance and handling. That’s not the case these days, with Ducati’s brutally powerful V4-engined Streetfighter, the Aprilia V4 Tuono, and others making high-performance and top-shelf handling available to riders who want reasonable comfort to go with their arm-stretching acceleration. But back in the early 90s Honda’s CB1000 combined modern styling in a classic superbike package: a liquid-cooled 998cc inline four engine producing a torque-rich 97hp, backed by a smooth five-speed gearbox. The twin-shock frame was a bit retro, even by 90s standards, and the 18″ wheels might make fitting quality tires these days a bit of a chore, but they visually shrink the bike, and the package was extremely polished and very versatile. Unfortunately, the bike was only sold for a few short years before being discontinued, making this a rare machine here in the US.

This particular example of Honda’s Big Red Retro is being offered by Kaplan Cycles in Connecticut and, like all of the bikes they list, appears to be in excellent condition, although the Buy-It-Now price is very high for a Honda CB1000, considering what nice examples were selling for just a few years ago. It certainly has had extensive work put into it, in terms of both maintenance and upgrades, so it very well might be worth what is being asked if you add up all the hours already invested and wouldn’t be interested in putting all that time into it yourself…

Beautiful example of this model line from Honda. As mentioned in the video…”Hard to find one in this over-all condition…w/low miles…and nicely sorted!” Prices have been escalating on these over the past 3-4 years. This one’s very nice and the “asking price” is indicative of that condition! Would love to own it! GLWS/GLWA.
