Introduced in 1985, Suzuki’s GSX-R750 might not have been the first bike to combine the features we now associate with the term “sportbike,” but its blend of style, performance, and affordability made it a true icon of the class. Weight savings was a central goal during the bike’s development, and the GSX-R was built around an aluminum tubular frame and swingarm. At its heart was a twin-cam, four-valve per cylinder inline four that eschewed liquid-cooling in favor of… a different cooling liquid. Suzuki’s Advanced Cooling System [SACS] used a high-capacity oiling system that meant weight savings, compared to traditional water-cooling. It was effective, and remained a feature of the GSX-R until the introduction of the 1992 model. The 749cc engine produced a claimed 100hp and a wet weight of 465lbs meant it was significantly lighter than its competition, allowing it performance parity with more powerful machines from Honda and Yamaha.
1988 Suzuki GSXR750 GR71 Slabside JDM recent import in good working condition with noticeable power comparing to similar model. Starts, shifts, and rides like it should, does not smoke or leaks. Has scratches and imperfections consistent with age. Clean and clear Texas title in hand. New Yuasa battery installed.
In case you’ve been screaming at your screen the whole time you’ve been reading this post: first-generation Suzuki GSX-R750 production is supposed to have ended in 1987. This is a grey-market import from Japan, so I’m not sure if there was something different about the bikes produced for that market. There doesn’t appear to be anything about the GR71 [the designation for a Japanese market bike] that would make it more valuable, but readers with more detailed knowledge please feel free to comment. The condition appears to be very good and miles are low, but the $11,500 asking price is definitely on the high side for an otherwise relatively plain GSX-R750.
