Obviously, the headline for this post is stolen from Jaguar, but it applies equally here: the Triumph Daytona 1200 was no agile sportster, it was a comfortable grand touring machine, with stable handling and power to spare. The fruits of John Bloor’s efforts to resurrect the brand in the 1990s was a range of machines built around a common spine frame design and two engines: an 885cc triple backed by either a five or six-speed gearbox, and an 1180cc inline four with a six-speed. This allowed the newly reborn Triumph to keep costs down and remain able to react quickly to market trends. Unfortunately, it didn’t allow them to produce cutting-edge machinery to compete with Japanese superbikes, so they didn’t bother. Instead, they focused on creating a quality experience, with higher build quality and good ergonomics. But that doesn’t mean the Triumph Daytona 1200 is slow: dry weight was just under 500lbs and the bike produced a claimed 147hp.
We generally like to include at least a significant portion of the seller’s original eBay listing but, in this case, it was just an ad for their dealership and associated marketing boilerplate. Which is strange, if you’re trying to sell interesting old motorcycles. In any event, the $5,999 asking price for this Triumph Daytona 1200 seems very fair for what you’re [hopefully] getting, assuming it runs and is otherwise in good order. Personally, I’d try to find a nice Daytona Super III but, if you’re in the market for something vintage, but with modern-ish handling and long legs, these seem like an affordable alternative to ever-increasing GSX-R1100 prices…
