With each bike that Red finds for us to post I ask him what’s significant about this bike? The most common answer I get is, “This bike is SWEET!” 😉 And it is always said with much enthusiasm. Then I ask for a bit more and the reply for this particular bike is that it is a race kit.
A ha. This bike has the magic of an 8-year-old boy’s birthday.
Based on the survey we conduced last year with our subscribers, I know that many of you are mainly interested in seeing what is on the market. You want to know the miles, the price and a few quick details, along with photos. The more photos the better. You like visiting the site to keep a pulse on the market.
That said, I also know some of you enjoy to read and you are very knowledgeable about these bikes. So out of respect, I clickity-click deep through the interwebs to see what I can find beyond the clear fact that this bike is sweet.
SBkencade sold a 1997 Yamaha TZ125 last year on BaT and he had this to say, “For anyone that has never experienced one of these real GP bikes, here are a few specs you might enjoy. The bike weighs in at about 170lbs and kicks out around 40 rw hp. It is a liquid-cooled single-cylinder purpose built GP bike with none of the normal streetbike compromises. The TZ125 is generally considered a little bit bigger than the Honda RS125. I have seen guys over 6ft tall race these bikes. I’ve personally been clocked at Daytona on a 125GP bike at 143 mph!
Still to this day, these GP bikes are one of (if not the best) bikes to teach new racers the craft. You make adjustments and the bike responds and teaches what those changes do to a setup by removing the streetbike variables.”
So it seems that beyond this bike being rare, and looking really cool, it can also be a ton of fun at the track. And it has a practical purpose for teaching the skill of racing.
According to Billy on the video the bike is “Cool X 1000.” You gotta check out the video in the ebay listing where you can see Billy screaming down the road. If you are a Kaplan fan like us, you’ll enjoy it.
Has anyone taken one of these to the track? It certainly looks like an exhilarating ride!
Good luck to the buyer and seller!
