Collector Quality RG: Titled 1986 Suzuki RG500 Gamma
I don’t care how many of these we post, I never get tired of them. This one is a gem. If you didn’t mortgage the house on the YZR500 replica from a a few days ago maybe you’d like to land a low mile, mint and titled RG500.
It doesn’t get much closer to showroom condition than this, especially for a 26 year old bike. Somebody really cared for this bike. I think it is in 100% stock condition.
It is a boring photo but very telling to me. Look how the “off/run” button isn’t faded. It hasn’t seen much sun.
Not very often does an opportunity to own a near perfect – low mileage ( 3280 miles / 5307 KM’s ) California titled 1986 Suzuki RG 500 come around. If you are reading this then chances are you already know the value – collectability and shear awesomeness that these bikes possess. They are the ultimate two stroke motorcycle and If you have ever had the thrill of riding or owning one — you know what I am talking about. They also go up in value very quickly — especially the few with low mileage and in great condition– as this bike represents.
Easy to ride around town — tame and relatively quiet — but get the revs up and suddenly you are on a mid 80’s GP race bike – these things are very peaky in GP hi rev mode and nothing sounds and accelerates quite like them.. Unintentional first – second and third gear wheelies … The power band is amazing.
4 cylinder 2 stroke perfection…This bike runs perfect – shifts perfect – looks perfect — Totally stock and in showroom condition. A 9.9 out of 10..
( This is a 26 year old bike that should be in a museum / it looks that beautiful — there are however 3 minor imperfections )
1.) Bottom of belly pan ( can’t see it unless you crawl under the bike) has a small melt spot as a result of fuel drippage / drain hose previously routed incorrectly ..
2.) Touch up on front fairing near headlight.. 1/4″ — look close and you still won’t see it…
3.) Left side panel near screw hole a small (1/4″) crack which was repaired.. hard to see so look close.
( All are very minor but wanted to mention them to the serious buyers / collectors that i am sure are looking at this fine example..)
Never dropped – never rebuilt – never abused and always stored in a temp sensitive pampered environment ..
It will be very hard to find a finer example with such low miles ( 3200) so if you are seriously considering grabbing one of these before they climb above $25K — and they will shortly — this is the RG you want — Just installed two new Bridgestone Battle ax ‘s front and rear..
The only decision that has to be made is what kind of RG buyer are you? Are you the type that leans to the collector side and like them stock? Or are you the type that wants to put some miles on it and a twist that throttle like it was meant to be twisted? The later I would assume would be much more interested in an RG that has had the more modern updates performed to it. For the collector types, well this is what you wait for. Add it to your collection here.

Best RG500 I’ve seen in a long time. I’d say its worth its 16k asking price in todays market. Now the 50k Walter Wolf I’m not to sure about….
The U.S economy is in a terrible state.Double digit unemployment, government debt is currently more than 100 percent of GDP,real estate values dropping like a lead balloon, share market looking like collapsing yet again. With no solution in sight.Let’s be clear.Boys toys are worth didely-squat,and will be for many years to come.IT’S A BUYERS MARKET.If you bought toys pre-GFC,expect to get half of what you paid for them,in the current market.

OldSkool, i kinda see where you’re coming from, except that people who collect things are generally well-off and aren’t affected by the economy the same way that most people are. that’s why high-end homes, yachts, lambos, and other nice things are selling just fine. gammas won’t ever sell for $9k again. they’re still a good buy and will continue to increase in value. it will be a while before you could sell one for $30k, but it will happen. i want one super bad and can’t just shell out $16k without it hurting, but if i could, i would in a second. one of the coolest bikes ever made, hands down.
Offer him 10k. Your dream will probably come true. Anyone who says sells something for 16k’s and then,in the same breath, says it will be worth 25k very soon is either ??????,or desperate for some cash.
No need to even debate, the seller ended the auction so my guess is someone offered him a very reasonable offer.
OldSkool the RG500 sold for its 16k asking price. I got that from a very reliable source. The DOW rose today as well so we can all breath a little. I believe Gamma futures are the way to go!!
For all you speculators — bike sold for $16,500 without a fight.
So i think old skool needs to change his name to old stool as it appears he has been talking out of his butt.
Peaple that are wealthy do not let something minor like a down economy get it their way of what they desire…….
Hello Oily,
To answer your question I would have to say, I’m not at all sure if this is the machine I purchased from RS, because it didn’t look anything like that when I arrived for the following reasons:
First off the machine I purchased recorded 14,680KM on the odometer. This machine in the ad shows 5,307KM.
When I viewed the machine it had white 1988-89 type GSXR wheels and Nissin brakes and adapter plates on the forks, not stock. I did receive a complete stock wheel and brake setup from RS but it wasn’t as pictured when purchased.
The upper quarter fairing was a replacement that had been damaged and repaired.
The ad claimed “New” Bridgestones, not when I picked it up. New tires yes, but cheap chinese type, not Bridgestones.
The indicator lens on the instrument cluster was crazed.
Many subtle other things are not as pictured compared to the actual bike I viewed
So without going on and on this picture may have been the bike I purchased at some point in it’s life just not when I picked it up.
Also I want to be clear, I decided at this point in my life after wanting one for 20 years it was time.
Even though I voiced some upset about misrepresentation on ebay, this was the best example I had found in over 3 years, so even though I didn’t like what I saw at the home of RS when I viewed it, I went forward knowing I was going to have Rick Lance or someone like that get it straightened out.
It’s just the whole presentation of the product that wasn’t right.
Best,
RP
I went with Rob to pick up this (?) RG500, and I second that the bike Rob picked up looked NOTHING like this. The bike Rob got, if it’s in fact this one, looks a whole lot better in pictures then it did in the flesh. If you know ANYTHING about bikes, you could tell at first glance that Rob’s RG was pretty well hammered; aftermarket fairing upper, bent fairing mount, dings in BOTH wheels, road-rashed front master cylinder (odd, considering Roy stated that the bike had never been down………………..guess he just rides REALLY good and leans over very far)
Bottom line……………….Roy seem to be, uhm, less then truthful. Nice guy……………….while he’s feeding you BS story.
Be very careful!
