Forget all of those tempermental Italian twins: Here is a “made in the USA” model that worked nearly as well (American made except for ancillary components and engine, of course). Unfortunately The Motor Company didn’t have great interest in sport bikes – nor did the majority of their customers. Erik Buell’s magnificent creations languished on the showroom floor – yet showed real potential. What could have been with a little investment….

I caught this one late – so auction ends in a day or so. Starting bid is sitting at $6,000 and there have been no takers as of yet. We don’t see too many 1125R models around, so these are legitimately rare. Click the link to get into the action. Check it out and let us know what you think. American Superbike or also-ran? Leave your thoughts in the comments section.

Theres usually a couple of these for sale at a time in my area. People seem to try to sell them at/around the 12K mile service. Maybe the valve adjustment is expensive?
I had the pleasure of racing the whole summer of 2010 on my ZX6R. There were a few guys running these and they would run with the best if them. A good rider on one would turn good lap times. They ran in 600 class and were a little over powered for that according to some. I found it interesting to add American race bikes to the mix. They are missed.
Appearance wise, a bit ugly duckling, like early Ducati 999 with stacked headlights. How horrified we were to see that. Then the various race livery versions helped me get over that and want one: Bostrum, Parts Unlimited, Fila, etc…
Chris
Did those have harley motors? maybe rotax? I have seen some Buell 1200 with low miles going for 3-4K, look cool, but I dont want anything with a harley motor, except a XR750.
it is a rotax powered engine in the 1125r
Yes- it’s a Rotax engine. When HD killed off Buell, dealers were blowing this model out at $6K and even under- which is the opening ask on this example. Good luck with that, Mr.Seller. Even then, you have to get past the known recalls, issues, problems, quirks, worst resale values in the industry, the ugly styling, and that hideous aftermarket exhaust system and wrap. Not gonna happen.
Rotax engine, great torque, lightweight, great brakes, good tires, fine cornering… what’s the definition of sportbike? This beast has nothing to do with Harley; they can’t sell sportbikes, because you can’t hang chrome and leather on them, throwing away half the parts which came on the bike. Buell struggled mightily against a culture of idiotic greasy longhair greed to produce this machine, and that’s a victory.
I wonder how this would compare to the new ebr 1190rx

After doing some online searching, Think I rather have an Aprilia RSV, I also see them going in the 3-4K range, fairly low mileage bikes, good ole rotax v-twin. The Buell 1125 R seems risky? spare parts, prices, service, etc
This particular model is not a desirable looking Buell and actually fairly hideous and I own a Buell. The xb9’s and xb12’s are the ones that most people are after these days due to the naked bike scene and they are the best looking out of the Buell line up. The sound coming out of those bikes puts most v-twins of all the genera’s to shame, and to be fair they don’t sound Harley like.
The more rare ones from that are the latter xb series are the “SCG” (lowered models) and the “SS” is the longer swing arm versions.
I had to go back to the OW01 and GSXR Limited after looking at this Buell to get the taste out of my mouth. Please stop putting Buells on this site. They aren’t that rare and they aren’t that desirable. Please stick to the exotica.
The 1125R won the 2009 AMA Pro Daytona Sportbike Championship with Danny Eslick riding for Bruce Rossmeyer / Geico.
By the definition of sportbike, the bike fits. As far as rarity is concerned, 5836 were made over 3 years production 08, 09, 10. That production rate averages 1945 per year. The MSRP was $7995.
A championship winning low production sport bike on ‘rare sport bikes for sale’? It fits, so quit whining.
The only people who think this all to be ugly are those who’ve had to discover all this when they were passed by it and had to see it all from the back. Personally, I don’t think the bike should have been in with 600’s, but then again, Erick always complained loudly that the AMA would not let him make the 1125 light to compete with the 1000’s. So, all you 600 owners who were passed, take you gripe up with the AMA, not the machine. Please, get over it, will you? The bike belongs, stop whining.
MSRP $7995, wow thats cheap! Hard to find a project RG500 that cheap. I think the Buell fits in this site, a 2007 GSXR 1000, no! Too common, but a great bike!
Despite what mack says I still agree with Erik.
Here is one in florida for asking $4500

Sorry Mack- your the one whining that this bike deserves mention here. Its shit… all Buells are shit.
Erik i beg to differ aaaaaall the cookie cutter bikes are shit mine’s got chain drive, 1190 kit ,EBR Exhaust. at the end of many track days people say WTF is in that thing.Rc8r,ZX10,R1 1098s all History. You don’t have enough tear-offs to keep up with me.
Ya i wouldn’t go as far to say that none don’t belong on the site or that they are all shit. They can be pretty fun bikes more so than Japanese mainstream bikes just some look hideous.
Now the new EBR 1190 (40+k) bike Belongs on this site more than most bikes that get posted.
