Featured Listing: 2000 Triumph TT600

Spring has sprung and we are just starting to see the tendrils of growth that promise to make this another banner year. And right on queue comes this wonderful Triumph TT600 Featured Listing. While perhaps not as rare or expensive as some bikes in collecting circles, the Triumph is a wonderful and unique machine that certainly fits into the rare and unusual category here on RSBFS. We don’t see them all that often, and these 600s represent an inexpensive way to get into a quality sport bike riding the road less traveled.

Featured Listing – 2000 Triumph TT600

In 2000, Triumph was the only manufacturer outside of Japan to take on the Big Four at their own game: the 600cc hyper sport segment. To be successful in this ultra-competitive space, the Hinkley, UK-based constructor needed to bring some serious mojo to the design table. What they crafted was a powerful, fuel-injected inline four cylinder screamer housed in a twin-beam aluminum frame. Eager not to fall into the trap of “not invented here,” ancillary components were sourced from the best that the Japanese had to offer, putting the TT600 on the same footing as the competition. Brakes were excellent Nissin units (310mm front, 220 rear), and front and rear suspension pieces were provided by Kayaba. In an attempt at cutting edge, Triumph engineers fitted the TT600 with a Sagem digital fuel injection unit. This ensured that the bike was firmly rooted in the new century (producing power AND fewer emissions), but Triumph was to discover the this new technology was not without pitfalls.

2000 Triumph TT600 for sale in great condition. Has 13,000 miles on the unit. The unit is rated at 110 HP, I have replaced the stock exhaust with an aftermarket pipe. I do have the original pipe to go with the bike. I have purchased a rear fork jack for storage. The bike has Diablos for tires currently. The bike comes with a cover and also a tank and rear foot peg video or go pro attachment. I also have a TT600 jacket that is in red and silver color. New battery as 11/2020. The bike runs well, it will need service on oil and brake fluid before taking it out for a long ride. The bike has an excellent riding position for long rides or tearing up the corners. There are very few left in the market place.

Reviewers of the day lavished the bulbous Triumph with high praise, being extremely comfortable despite being a competitive crotch-rocket. The Kayaba suspension was set up a bit softer than the other middleweights, and the engine was a estimated 110 HP powerhouse that pulled hard in the upper revs – although suffered from some fuel injection stumbling at lower throttle settings. Handling was reported to be excellent as the alloy chassis was ultra stiff – even when compared to the Japanese competition. Overall build quality was up to a very high standard as well, making these motorcycles as exotic in the US as other European brands. Here is a video shot by the seller of this exact bike:

The TT600 model evolved in the 3 short years of its existence, paving the way for the Daytona series. Today these are relatively rare models, and difficult to find in decent condition. Today’s Featured Listing is a well-cared for rider that has the miles to prove the TT600 concepts works well, yet still looks as rare and unique as it did 20 years ago. In fact, given that most of the competition maintains a very angular design language, one might argue that the Triumph has aged far better that its peers; it certainly makes a distinctive statement in 2021. The exhaust upgrade helps with sound, performance and looks (win win win), and the overall package is listed for just $4,000. Interested parties should give Peter a shout. The Triumph TT600 is a great looking bike that owns a rightful place in history as a serious 600cc contender. Check out all of the pictures and video and then talk to the man.

Use Your Boost to Get Through – 1983 Suzuki XN85 Turbo

Vying for additional power without displacement, the 1980’s saw major cycle makers attempt to tailor the excess heat and complexity of turbocharging to sport bikes.  Suzuki’s entry is the rarest and this one has ultra-low mileage, and just one tangle with the mischievous elves that tip stuff onto parked motorcycles.

Suzuki based their turbo on a 673cc inline four, and used electronic fuel injection to tailor the fuel delivery through the variable throttle / boost map.  85 hp are claimed, leading to the model designation.  An early adopter of innovations like Full-Floater rear suspension, air-oil cooling system ( with piston squirters ), and 16-inch front wheel, the XN85 was a bit of a tech showcase.  Kayaba provided the suspension, with anti-dive forks.  Triple disks are big but not oversize considering the 550 lb. ready-to-ride weight.  Angular fairing and sculpted tank owe royalties to the then-recent Katana.

Detailed photos should be part of an auction with a high falutin’ buy-it-now, which this eBay bike parts dealer probably knows.  Nothing a pre-purchase inspection can’t remedy, however.  Some history and service record(s) would be a help, even for a bike with so many years and so few miles.  Short and sweet from the eBay listing:

483 miles – all original except petcock, last ran in December 2018. Also, have Service Manual, and original title.
Right rear tail section has scratches that can be fixed.

Suzuki’s turbo was the sportiest of the big four’s litter, though even at that it’s more of a GT.  None were real showroom success stories, but maybe their role was more of leading edge glitterati for the dealer.  Under just the right conditions, the XN85 could woosh through the traps first, or just look great on the sidestand.  Either way the XN85 can provide liter-size performance from a boosted mid-size, and maybe the make offer button will let us know whether this is a survivor or museum piece.

Rev. 1.0 – 2000 Triumph TT600

Taking the sportbike fight right downtown, Triumph’s all-new 600 made a valiant run at the big four.  Light weight, nice handling, and quality components, it unfortunately had to be shipped before the fuel injection could be adequately tweaked.  And though software updates have corrected the throttle response issues, the damage to the reputation caused the TT to be superseded after only three years.

Triumph’s twin-spar alloy frame carries 43 mm Kayaba forks and monoshock, both fully adjustable.  Quality Nissin brakes use dual 310 mm front rotors and 220 mm rear.  The rounded full fairing incorporates two fresh air intakes above the fork legs.  At a time when most manufacturers were using four carburetors, Triumph made a big wager on Sagem electronic fuel injection.  Peak power was competitive at 110 and nearly 13,000 rpm, but rideability suffered from the faulty fuel injection map.

With just about 8,500 miles, this TT looks great with its polished exhaust and recent tires.  The mid-west owner says this in the eBay auction:

Here for sale rare 2000 Triumph TT 600 in excellent condition.  The bike is running, riding and shifting excellent and has only 8441 miles (as of today).

It is 600cc 4 cylinder water cooled engine with 110hp and 68Nm. 6 speed and 154mph top speed.

Very nice example of British sport bike.

Most TT600’s received updated software under warranty, but it might be worth checking the maintenance records on this machine.  Triumph’s return to the sportbike market should’ve been a great success.  Once the fuel delivery woes were sorted, the bike got great reviews as a nicely equipped sharp handler – maybe without Japanese street cred but a fine start.  This one looks smart in red and appears to be a cared-for example, might end up being a bargain.

Parts Bin: Forken A! Kayaba RGV500 And Ohlins GSVR Forks

Who has some Christmas cash burning a hole in their pocket?  Technology has probably long passed them by but what Suzuki project would not be just a bit cooler with some old works parts?  Don’t you wish you lived in the UK to hit the Suzuki GP HQ yearly yard sale?

 I know the picture shows Kenny Roberts Jr. but the seller claims these are forks off a XR79 RGV500.  If that is the case, that would place them as 1993 models with Schwantz and Barros on the Team.  I’m pretty sure they had moved on to Ohlins by the time Kenny joined the team as well.  Who know’s how many sets of forks they would have cycled through in a year and we all know the settings would not be applicable but  I wouldn’t turn my nose up at an opportunity to own a set if I had a applicable project waiting for them.  The seller didn’t include any dimensions/specs on them unfortunately.  He does mention they were also used some Kawasaki race bikes (I’m assuming ZXR’s) as well.

Asking price is 1,955 GBP

Have no fear if you like your factory parts more current.  This set of Ohlins is claimed to come off of John Hopkins 2005 GSVR.  The seller claims they even have a super secret Ohlins parts number (I embellished that a little).  This seller did supply the numbers I’m sure you’d like to know if interested:

Lower triple: 56mm
Axle hole: 30 mm
Caliper bracket length : 108mm

 

 

For the 3,500 GBP price tag, I hope you have better luck with them than Hopper had.
