Eye of the Storm: 1987 Honda CBR600 F Hurricane

Winter is upon us with its stormy moods. A perfect time to sit inside by the fire and reflect. What better time to take a look at a pretty cherry CBR600F model Hurricane and revel in its ability to survive. Sure, I know what you're thinking: there is no way that a UJM that was mass produced in the tens of thousands will ever be rare. And I can see the point. The whole crux of the laws of supply and demand move us to a place where demand outstrips the supply - this is difficult to do with a commodity product. But this was a commodity more than 30 years ago. Today to find a well preserved CB600F model is not all that easy. It may not be Supermono or Tesi scarce, but certainly no easier than finding a clean Ducati "R" model, Superlight or the odd Bimota SB/YB series example. Today's Hurricane has traveled fewer than 500 miles per year of its life, and is looking spiffy for it's existence of relative relaxation. Let's dig deeper.

The bikes we covet today are direct descendants of the 1980s, that watershed era when manufacturers experimented like hippies in the 1960s. Trying any number of cylinders in a variety formats, different types of induction, liquid cooling, four valves per cylinder, mass centralization, full fairings and air flow management, tire and wheel sizes, brakes and exhaust, the Big Four went crazy with bringing new ideas to market. Honda in particular exhibited A.D.D. during this period, offering air cooled, V-4 and inline four models with varying performance characteristics. But it was the Hurricane that open the door to the fully-faired repli-racer look that continues to this day in the 600RR line. That is a pretty amazing run for a very capable machine.

Excellent condition for a 32 year old ICON in the Motor Cycle World.

It'd be nice for it go to a collector who understands what it is and appreciates it's excellent condition. I just rode it yesterday for 15 miles out in the country and the bike pulls clean and runs - idles perfectly. Please note in the pictures & the video that some of the angles the sun makes the red color look faded out. It is all bright RED as it was when new.

Before this ignites a storm of another kind, we have seen this seller before. The consensus is that the bikes represent themselves better mechanically than cosmetically - but that doesn't mean everything offered is in the same condition. This bike looks very clean and in far superior shape to most any of the vintage Hurricanes we have seen. 15k on the clocks is higher than many would consider, but aside from some minor cosmetic damage if the bike is as stated mechanically what you have here is an excellent rider. Check out the pictures and video. And as alwasy, RSBFS recommends that you do your homework. Look closely, research the model, and ask the seller questions if any data or detail is unclear. This holds true regardless if you are buying a RC30 or a YSR50.

If you've weathered the storm thus far, you have seen a clean example of a 1987 CBR600F. And while this is definitely not everyone's cup of tea, this No Reserve auction has shown some decent action. There is no gold-plated Buy It Now option here. $100 bought you the first bid in this game, and the price has quickly climbed over $2k. How high will it go? There are lots of watchers on this one, but from the looks of things the price is still firmly in the bargain basement territory. I don't see really see this above the $5-6k mark, but there may be someone out there that just has to have a vintage Hurricane. Jump in if you're nostalgic for the bike you couldn't afford in high school, but don't expect to be making a brilliant investment. There will always be a market for a clean, older bike - even one that isn't in high demand - but the value appreciation will be slow at best. But who really cares? The value is in what you see, and who doesn't see something cool in a well-preserved sport bike artifact? Check it out carefully, and bid with gusto - after all, Christmas is just around the corner! What could have been: 2009 BMW HP2 Sport

In 2008 BMW launched the ultimate boxer sport bike, the HP2 Sport. An offshoot of the stillborn GP racer project (which management wisely decided could not be competitive in a straight up fight), BMW instead released a no-compromise sporting twin of uber-exclusive status. Limited in numbers and impossibly expensive, the HP2 Sport was a brief, flashy prelude to the more conventional S1000RR. I've been eyeing this example for a bit, and decided it was finally time to share with RSBFS readers.

The BMW HP2 Sport is a bit of a dichotomy. Long known as the gentleman's transport, BMWs staid reputation was based on longevity, quality and composure; out and out sporting intent was conspicuously missing. Incorporating all of the traditional elements of BMW - including the boxer twin and shaft drive - the HP2 Sport stretched the boundaries of what was possible. New cylinder head design opened up the airways with four valves, yet were shorter than older 2-valve assembly. That new dimension, bolted onto cylinders that were placed a bit higher on the bike, made for better cornering with less risk of touching down the heads during spirited cornering. Power was up - way up - with an estimated 130 HP on tap. While nothing compared to the following S1000RR's 200 ponies, this was a high water mark for a factory boxer. Top level brakes (Brembo) and suspension (Ohlins) complimented the package, along with a generous sprinkling of carbon fiber. Test riders universally liked the HP2 Sport, outside of the price tag and the limitations of the boxer packaging. By 2012 the HP2 Sport faded into the sunset, and with it the future of the boxer as a serious sporting platform.

For the BMW Motorrad enthusiast - a 2009 BMW HP2 Sport ABS in absolutely pristine condition. Freshly serviced by A&S BMW in Sacramento, it's been fitted with a rare Fat Cat slipper clutch (with less than 100 miles since installation). As used on the race versions, this Suter-designed clutch is the final piece that transforms the torquey HP2 into a fluid track day or backroad delight. Very few HP2 Sports have been equipped with one as they are hard to find (this one came from England) expensive to buy and install, but worth every penny on a big-bore high performance twin like the HP2.

This motorcycle has been garaged, covered, and impeccably maintained since new. Never dropped or down and in perfect mechanical and cosmetic condition. BMW made an iconic engineering statement with the HP2 Sport by building a very limited production, hand crafted "factory special" featuring DOHC radial valve heads, exotic internals and carbon fiber bodywork from an F1 constructor (signed by the technician who built each piece). The result was the highest performance BMW boxer twin ever made (136bhp), featuring sublime handling, ABS brakes, a factory-installed quick shifter and the first carbon fiber subframe on a production motorcycle. This bike sparkles with carbon fiber valve covers and tail light assembly, milled-from-billet foot controls/clip-ons/upper triple clamps, Motek MotoGP-style instrumentation (with programmable displays and lap timers), Magura levers, forged aluminum wheels, BMW's patented telelever/paralever front/rear suspension with fully adjustable Ohlins shocks and Brembo radial-mount monoblock calipers. The best components available were used in constructing these machines.

Approximately 230 HP2 Sports were imported into the US (BMW kept the actual number confidential) and they will never make another Boxer like this one. A blue-chip collectible motorcycle that's a revelation to ride - it represents the ultimate evolution of the classic air/oil cooled BMW boxer motor, wrapped in bespoke carbon bodywork and mated to a lightweight chassis with world-class components. Understandably, it draws a crowd wherever it goes. The track stand (pictured) is also included. Original MSRP was nearly $27,000, and prices for exceptional examples like this now are on the rise.

The HP2 Sport was available as a base model, or with ABS. The option list was short, with both models benefitting from the same excellent componentry throughout. Price wise, this was a $25k+ motorcycle in 2008 - which was a princely sum. Prices for used models have slowly dropped as they infiltrate into the secondhand market, but overall the valuation of these bikes has persisted. What we are likely seeing is the common pricing dip prior to an eventual rise in overall values. This is a limited edition, very special model motorcycle that should present well for years to come. This is exactly the type of model that will appreciate in the future even if it was not as appreciated as a sport bike when first introducted. This particular model looks to be in very good condition, has a reasonable number of miles, and has been listed several times on eBay. The price point has slowly moved downwards since the first listing, making this example a good (possible bargain?) candidate. Bidding starts below $15k, which is in the range for the model. Happy Monday RSBFS readers! The dreaded winter slowdown has yet to arrive - plenty of fantastic bikes continue to pop up despite the onslaught of weather across the US. If you are snowed in and looking for something to do, adding a rare bike to your collection from the comfort of your home might be an ideal winter activity. And if you need something to melt the snow, this hot ZXR400 might just be your ticket.

Built for a time where the Big Four were concerned with the declination of the 250cc two stroke class, the 400s were intended to be the four stroke equivalent of a GP bike. Requisite top-shelf components are found throughout, including aluminum frame, upside down front forks (normal today, but race-worthy stuff in the 1990s), lots of suspension adjustability and big, 300mm brakes signaled the track intent of the small ZXR. On the power side, the rise of the small four stroke was based in RPM. Lots of RPM. With a redline north of 14,000 revolutions per minute, the liquid-cooled four cylinder with four-valves per offers up close to 60 horsepower (depending on the market). Packaged in a tidy, 350-ish pound serving size, the ZXR is a razor sharp missile...provided you are under 6 feet. Bigger riders may show a lot of knees and elbows, hardly comfortable and certainly not very aerodynamic.

Up for sale is a gorgeous 1993 Kawasaki ZXR400R “M” model in mint condition with only 5,045 kilometers (3,134 miles). Bike is completely stock except for steel braided brake lines. All fairings and components are 100% genuine factory Kawasaki. Brand new Dunlop Sportmax tires have been installed. Bike runs like the day it was new. Just serviced with New battery and fluids. This is a premium ZXR. Museum quality. Bike comes with Utah state title and is titled as a streetbike for road use.

A bit sharper than contemporary 400s - at the expense of overall usability - the little green screamer was a solid effort to supplant the quarter liter two strokers. The hype was real and the 300cc class today owes this bike a debt of gratitude. This ZXR400R looks great. This is a classic grey-market bike in classic Kawasaki livery. The passage of time is tough on performance benchmarks, but tips the scales when it comes to laws of supply and demand. This bike is being offered in a Buy It Now auction format for $10,800, with the seller open to offers. That is a premium price for a 400, but 25 years on it is getting harder and harder to find an unmolested example.
