Green, The New Red: 2004 998 Ducati Matrix Special Edition
To be honest, I never paid much attention to Ducati’s marketing exercise with the 998 Matrix Special Edition. I wasn’t going to go buy a bike because I saw some helmet less chick in bondage gear ride one in a movie chase scene. Having said that, I haven’t seen one in a while and well, that green looks damn good. In a sea of Ducati red and the odd yellow and black the Matrix Edition stands out.
This one is a looks to be a darn nice example. It only has 6,500 miles on it and has a few tasteful upgrades. The most unique of those would be the Matrix monoposto tail which is quite a rare item. The bike also has a set of FBF mufflers (might be a whole system, not sure) and Ducati Racing Brembo wheels. As you can see from the picture the seller still has the original wheels as well. There is a little carbon fiber sprinkled in there as well. If you are a movie buff the seller also has some Matrix movie memorabilia to go along with the sell.
I can’t say I’ve seen one of these before. A nice option to have if the wife trys to tag along.
Thank God the lawyers got this on the bike. That isn’t tacky at all.
I don’t think Jaguar could have done the color any better. Only 150 were produced.
The price tag seems quite reasonable: the seller has an auction starting at $6,000 and a BIN of $8,500. It looks like Matrix Editions have been offered from as high as $12,500 to as low as $7,500 lately.

Whoa! Driving around on a hunter green Ducati would be most excellent!
Almost as awesome as … knowing Kung Fu!
But when you find yourself driving the wrong way on the freeway (which Morpheus told you specifically not to do), just remember…
There is no spoon.
(mind blown expression)
Pointed noted.
” Ducati Racing Brembo wheels” ???…unless those are the magnesium wheels off of an early 916 SPS, there was nothing “Racing” about those heavy assed wheels in comparo to the cast Marchesini 5 spoke wheels that the bike came with IMHO, FWIR.
The British Racing Green color belongs on a Lotus or a Mini….not a Ducati.
Oh, I forgot about Lotus Green.
Nedragr- while I somewhat agree with you ( you forgot Jaguar, like on a nice old XKE ), this particular green shouldn’t be confused with British Racing Green, as BRG is a matte color and this Matrix color has a slight sparkly metalflake in its high gloss finish.
Helmetless chick in bondage gear riding a Ducati, mmmmmmm : )
Hey Brian, your point about their weight… is noted but those 3 spoke rear wheels have “Ducati Racing” cast into them, and they’re made by Brembo. so the sellers description is accurate and reasonable…
@ Brian. The 3 spokes were made by Brembo and early ones have “Ducati Racing” cast around the axle hole on the right side. I don’t know why the current owner has them on the bike however. They are not original to the Matrix edition, don’t match the frame color, and are quite heavy. Also, none of the 916 series 3-spokes were magnesium. Not even the SPS.
As far as the color goes, these pictures are in bright light and slightly misleading. In person it looks much darker than BRG (which has no sparkle like this, but is NOT matte, by the way).
Good info Adam, thanks for the post.
