Well, this Kawasaki is a bit different from yesterday’s feature. The ZX-9R was a low-mile superbike from the end of the analog era. This one is an air-cooled ’80s four that has been ridden, enjoyed, and kept by the same person for forty-two years.
Most bikes from this era have been through four or five hands, a couple of rattle-can jobs, and at least one set of pipes that sounded better in the garage than on the road. This one still has the stock exhaust and paint you can see your reflection in. The digital fuel gauge on the tank still lights up.
The GPz750 was Kawasaki’s air-cooled middleweight before the Ninja era took over, and it has a reputation as one tough motor. Classic Bike Guide called it a usable classic you can actually ride in modern traffic. At 25,100 miles, this one has been ridden, but not hard.
For reference, a 1984 with 17,005 miles sold for $4,280 on Iconic Motorbike Auctions.
Who had a GPz back in the day? And would you keep riding this one or finally let it rest?
Good luck to the buyer and seller!

We referred to this style of GPz as the “swoopy” GPz’s.
Classic at a reasonable price for a change
I really want to ride this bike. I had a 84 gpz1100 back in 93. And at that point i had 3 years of riding experience. I remember that bike for a few things that stand out in my memory. 1. Surprisingly great front brakes. 2. A bike that would and did tankslap if you weren’t careful.
this isn’t an 1100 but it is very similiar. Would it tankslap? Would my perspective with more rider development 34 years later change that? As an accomplished racer/trackrider, I really wonder what this bike would feel like to me now. I have fond memories of my 1100.
***Unfortunately i learned my motorcycle maintenance/repair skills destroying the gpz. (Learn by doing -wrong). So I’d like to get my hands on this machine. But I have no motivation to own a streetbike with the current size of my garage.
I’ve owned the ’83 model for 10 years now and it’s been a pleasure to ride. Previous owner did a great job of keeping it up. Only 17K miles! Brakes work exceptionally well for a 40-year-old bike and is surprisingly quick. He installed a 4into1 exhaust that sounds great and gave me all the original pipes and headers along with a few extra too. I was always eager to take any parts a seller was willing to throw in with a sale and one of these days I’ll have to get active on ebay and start selling. And I’m starting to worry about leaving my wife with so many motorcycles and parts that she would have no idea what to do with once I’m gone.
Michael J, if you are ever in the Seattle area, you are welcome to take her out for a spin.
Agreed, this generation of Kwackers have a lot of ‘character’.
