2000 Aprilia RS250 for sale on eBay
I told you it was clean. It looks like it has a 17 digit VIN and might very well be the same RS we posted back in 2010.
The Jollymoto’s are a nice touch and definite upgrade over the usual Arrow’s you see on RS’s.
Looks good and the oil injection is still in place.

Hi, This is the bike I’m selling! Compared to my other 2 strokes it flies , I mean compared to other 250’s, 350’s 400’s and my old RG500 it really goes. Then it has the suspension and crazy brakes too.
Is this with a US registered 17 digit VIN? What bike is this registered as? As was the donor frame destroyed? Buyer be aware that if a bike with a donor VIN triggers a ‘VIN already exists’ flag at registration time, you may be on the hook for a ‘washed title’ and stolen goods.
It is much better to still have the donor frame in hand. Especially if it is an RD350 donor VIN.
quote;”Is this with a US registered 17 digit VIN?”,,,,yes, yes, yes ,,,,no more needs to be said, there is no question.
Actually, a lot needs to be said. It is a) illegal to wash titles – b) if the donor bike still exists and the state does a VIN search and registration time the holder of the washed title bike is in possession of stolen property.
If the bike had a 17 digit VIN on the frame and was registered as a bike that it is not, then the registering authority at their discretion may seize the bike until a MSO can be produced if the inspecting party decides that the VIN on display does not come back as anything on the list.
I see the RZ350 in the back ground, how many times has that VIN been used to register TZR250’s over the years? 🙂
Buyers need to be aware that when they take their previously registered stroker with a ‘creative’ VIN into their states DMV, they might not get it back.
sorry no more needs to be said
RC,
I have a feeling what the seller is hinting at, is that this RS actually has a 17 digit VIN stamped on the frame from the factory. It is a German bike and I want to say Germany uses a 17 digit VIN like we do here. I want to say we listed a few with 17 digit VIN’s.
Ian, Thank you , you are absolutely correct .
RC45 are you the grey market DMV specialist?
Having a non-US derived 17 digit VIN still means that if a by-the-book DMV office decides that the model being registered is suspect because it is not a US listed model by the VIN search then the buyer can be a difficult spot.
As recently as last year an RZ500 owner in Arizona had his ex-Canadian bike impounded because the VIN is stamped on a plat welded to the steering head.
All RZ500’s are this way, but the mere suspicion of an odd VIN was enough to get the bike seized. Luckily the owner was able to rally other RZ500 owners to show they all have such VIN plates – but the real danger was that all the other bikes might have been subject to seizure if the DMV decided that as non-US models they where all illegal. Again, luckily the RZ500 falls under the 25 year exemption – not so much for a 2000 year model RS250.
Understand the RS250 did come to the US a race only model, so the real issue is that under the law any competition only model can then be subject to the penalty of trying to register and operate a competition only model on the road.
In Texas we don’t have that much to worry a about as the initial inspection (for out of state bikes sold into the state) is carried out by a dealer, not a DMV office, so it is much easier to get the inspection done to then take your papers to the DMV for a plate. But you will be hard pressed to find a dealer that will be willing to lie about the VIN – there is a lot at stake for them.
I have a titled RZ500, a titled RZ500 frame, a titled RZV500 frame, a titled TZR2503MA, titles TZR3XV frame, 2 titled NS400 frames and a titled TZ250 frame. All of these frames/bikes required some creative process to get titled. All of the processes required some person at some point to either not know the law, ignore the law or simply look the other way.
I was lucky enough to buy all the frames/bikes with their current titles. My 3MA how ever can not easily be resold as we discovered it was originally titled by way of title washing. I did a VIN search one day and found the VIN being used is still on the books in 2 states. I managed to track down the RZ350 used for the VIN and bought it so I could legally lay claim to the VIN – we destroyed the RZ frame – this I did so that I could not be accused of being in possession of a stolen frame.
I could care less what people do – I just want all buyers to be aware of the pitfalls of buying currently titled bikes.
In some states it may be easiest to register and title a stroker as a ‘new home made’ bike rather than trying to cheat your ay into the system.
You may not read about the folks that get into trouble, but it happens – a lot more than we care to believe.
Do the Canadians use a 17 digit? I think so, I have not Been pulled over in years. I had a 1991 KR-1S with New Zealand title, that did not have a 17 digit and I got it registered in florida, also a JDM 1985 RG400 with a Japanese title, no problems. I don’t see anyone impounding these old 2 strokes unless they catch you doing 150 in a 35.
sold!sold!sold …. and well bought I might add
Congratulations Jim! Seems like a very good price to me and I hope you’ll check back with us with your impressions upon delivery.
