It is easy for bikes like this to get overlooked on a site that usually leans toward homologation specials, rare Ducatis, and iconic Japanese sportbikes, but this 2001 Buell X1 Lightning deserves a closer look.
With just 556 miles, this one is about as close to a time capsule as you are likely to find. The X1 was Buell’s take on the naked sportbike formula, pairing a torque-heavy 1203cc V-twin with sharp handling and styling that looked unlike anything else on the road at the time. Raw, a little quirky, and fully committed to doing things its own way.
That personality is exactly why these still have a following. As reader @Nick put it on a past post, “If I had to describe them in one word it would be rowdy. They shake so much at idle it blurs your vision, but man do they sound cool.” That about sums it up.
And then there is the broader Buell story. @Locky had a take in 2022 that still feels relevant: “Great fun, small money. Buell should have moved to northern Italy, where he would have been appreciated.” He also pointed out that even serious riders like Niall Mackenzie were known to hustle Buells around tracks like Donington, sometimes to the surprise of riders on more modern machinery.
The Buell Nick and Locky were looking at in 2022 had 9,776 miles and was asking $5,000. It was a limited edition with the blue and white color scheme.
This is not the bike for someone chasing perfection. It is for the rider or collector who already has the refined stuff and wants something with character. Something a little unruly. Something you will end up explaining to people every time you stop.
With mileage this low, this one leans even more toward the collector side of the spectrum. Either way, it is a rare chance to grab a very clean example of a bike that has always done things differently.
Good luck to the buyer and seller!
