Lets get the obvious out of the way first. This Yamaha sports “period correct” colors, also known as a lot pink! But if this bike checks out, a clean YZF 750R is not easy to find in the U.S. and the more desirable SP specification is even more rare as I didn’t know that any were imported to this country.
The YZF 750R was heavily based on Yamaha’s outgoing OW01 homologation racing special though no parts are actually interchangeable. For Yamaha fans that’s already a strong pedigree, but the SP adds fully adjustable suspension, a close ratio gearbox (with a tall first gear), a true solo seat, higher spec cams, and uprated carbs. Reviews of the day suggested that most riders would prefer the stand R model as it was simply easier to negotiate on actual day to day roads. And while only the chassis and engine cases of the SP would actually make it on to actual race bikes, the SP model was as close as you could get to that experience.
1993 Yamaha YZF 750 SP For Sale on eBay
This particular example shows only 618 miles and looks very good in these simple photos (color balance issues?). The seller doesn’t include any detailed information about the bike so due diligence will be required to research the history of the bike and it’s condition. The ad only states that only 6 SP’s were sold here and specifications for the machine.
Aside from the colors, this bike strikes my fancy as a Yamaha fan of the period. While I may never be able to afford an OW01, this could be a fun alternative for a fraction of the price. I will be curious to see where this auction ends. Leave a comment with your experiences with the YZF 750 and what you think this bike will sell for.

Man that thing is like 10min from my house, wonder if they will let me check it out
I remeber the yamaha rep’s would cringe back then when you called it Pink they was quick to correct you and say it was magenta.
Erick, keep us posted if you see it up close and personal.
Can’t imagine how tall first must be ’cause first on the R was quite tall.

LOL on the Pretty in Pink vid John. This is one pretty bike for sure. My favorite guitar I had in high school was an Ibenez PGM with pink pick ups and graphics.
I have the Australian Version. Still a weapon of a bike. As for the first gear well good for 85mph in first (assuming 39/16 sprocket ratio). In Australia they were single tone pink (sorry magenta). If you ditch the pipe it adds a decent amount of ponies and also drops the weight considerably.
Two obvious things to check are the redline (13K v 11.5K for the R) and you could also see if it has the carb balancing tubes (two either side under the frame inline with the middle of the tank) as I am pretty sure the R does not have these as they are CVs versus the SPs flatslides.
i have just seen all the comments about the sp model, i have one of these bikes in london, it hasnt moved sinced 2002 although it has still been cared for mechanically. it has 12.5k miles on the clock form new and is the cocktail colours, it is completley original and out of interest wondered what approx value this would be in the states, anyone know? tpshoes@aol.com
