Ready to be refreshed and put back into service — or on your mantle! Rick has emailed us this special piece and has done a great job describing and photographing it. With the “new in the crate” Daytona going for $21k recently, this looks like a bargain at $7k!
from the seller:
Yamaha RD400F Daytona. Special. Serial 2V0-003100. Purchased 5.26.79
I bought this RD400F new in 1979. It has less than 2400 miles and has been mothballed in my Burbank, CA, garage since 1984. The bike was properly stored. All the chrome was oiled. Gas tank drained and carbs run dry. I followed the storage instructions. Unpacked, cleaned, reoiled and wrapped every five years.
The bike was never raced or crashed. I always intended to put it back into service when I retire (next month). Now, I have Parkinson’s Disease, which is not a good combo for riding a Daytona Special. I also have a 17-year-old son who wants me to give it to him. A teenage son and a Daytona Special…..another bad combination.
This bike is very clean….a beauty inside and out. In 1979 Cycle Magazine described the RD400F as the kind of motorcycle Dennis the Menace would ride.
Documents: RD400F Owners Manual, RD400 C D Service Manual, RD 400F Supplementary Service Manual. 1979 Cycle Magazine which features the Daytona Special. Have current tags and clean pink slip.
Things that will need attention: Grommet (rubber donut) for holding left side-cover is missing. Brake lines do not maintain pressure. Carb butterflies seem stuck (unable to roll the throttle). Original tires. No battery.
Modifications: Bullet fairing. Exhaust baffles are shortened. You can hear this RD a block away, but it’s a beautiful sound.
For $7,000 it’s your show bike. Rick Meyer laphotog@aol.com
Good luck with the sale Rick and be well!
