Ring A Ding HD: 1976 Harley Davidson 250RR (Aermacchi)
Volley balls and two strokes: the 70’s were an interesting time for AMF Harley Davidson. It is kind of easy to joke and poke fun but at least HD was dabbling in racing/sport bikes which is more than can be said nowadays. Buell barely survived their fumbling and bumbling last year. KTM should not be the only racing orange out there. Looking through the secured and encrypted RSBFS files it looks like we’ve featured more 35o than 250 road racers from HD.
As you may know, these are HD’s with an asterisk. There wasn’t a top secret HD two stroke development arm but instead they came off the design table at Aermacchi in Italy. In fact, HD bought a 50 percent stake in the company. I had trouble finding how many 250’s brought to the States; anyone know the actual number?
Mmm, naked is good. I’ve seen several bikes come out of this work shop and they all have looked top notch. Here is a little example.
Here is the story on his current listing:
This is a older rebuild I purchased 2 years ago for my collection. I have done the rebuild on some of the parts, such as all the hydraulics on the Scarab front calipers and master cyl. Also replaced the rear drum brake with the correct replica as the bike was missing the drum brake and was fitted with a Disc. The engine top end looks new, but I did not split the casses. All feels good and everything turns free.Bike will come with Bill of Sale only. Please ask any question you may have and I will try and answer them. The bike is very clean and shows well. A nice addition for a race collection, asssss only 20 of these 250`s were imported into the US.I have the original Manual for this bike with all the settings as last raced.
That shock/swing arm setup almost looks dated for 1978. It couldn’t have been too dated as works rider Walter Villa won three world championships on the 250. Not that this bike needs it but it looks like Airtech makes replacement bodywork for this bike. No end cans needed in those days.
Is the seller tempting us because the vintage festival is coming up at Barber Motorsports Park this month? If not, I just gave you a reason to throw in a bid.
Ian
I know someone who has one of those in his dining room…. Very cool and rare!
That’s a new one. Can’t say I’ve heard of a bike in a dining room yet.
“It was so clean, I’d have eaten off of it.”
Volley balls or bowling balls?
“Buell barely survived their fumbling and bumbling last year.” Please clarify what you are talking about.
HD had no vision for Buell and eventually killed the brand off last year. Eric Buell then formed EBR and is doing quite nicely it looks like.
