Update 1.26.2014: Updated price now $7000. From the seller:
It has been brought to my attention by a RSFS reader that the bike has had some paint work done on the tank, and the rear tailpiece replaced. I had a CBX “expert” confirm this, and while not apparent when you take a look at the bike, there is a missing sticker on the tank that would have been under the clear coat, and another sticker in its place. With this in mind, I feel I should lower the price on the bike to $7K obo, which is a more accurate reflection of its market value, given the paint.
I also have 16 high-res (4meg) images of all the “patina” on the bike, as well as a video of it running that I can share with interested buyers.
Today’s Feature Listing is this tasty and mildly upgraded Honda CBX 1000! Designed by Honda engineers to flex a little corporate muscle, this 1047cc, six cylinder, 24-valve air cooled rocket remains one of the most coveted bikes of the 1980s. When it comes to the “naked bike” genre – where the motor is everything – there is nothing like a CBX.
This example has seen 3 owners and just 12k miles since new. Tim’s asking price is a mere $9k $7k and we feel this is a very fair asking price based on previous CBX sales.

from the seller:
Ready to sell my 1979 CBX. 3rd owner. Always garaged. 12K miles. Runs well. Sport Kit. Pipemasters Stainless 6 into 6 exhaust – sounds great!. Works Performance air-adjustable shocks. New Tires. New brake pads and fluid. Battery always on tender. Solid cosmetic condition with some scratches. Original seat that looks original. Everything works on this bike and it is a solid, ridable first-generation sport bike . Easily restored, but I bought it to ride and enjoy. Includes OEM exhaust that is in rough, but restorable, condition. 3 into 2 exhaust also (probably Bub). All original controls that were replaced by the sport kit. Extra clutch cable and clutch basket.
$9K$7k or best offer. Available immediately in San Rafael CA
I had two of these great bikes . I had a nice clean 79′ like this one (only paid $550 for it back in 1989 !) & another 1979 red one with a Hooker 6-1 . It had a tired engine , but it sounded awesome . This one looks nice . Good luck to the seller .
That’s great for all of us to know (honestly nobody really cares), but can you offer any constructive insights into THIS example- other than it “looks nice”? Considering that this is a rider with mileage and modifications, and not a museum peice, is it priced market correct? There are a few well known issues with first generation CBX’s (alternator noise, loose clutch baskets, cam cover leaks)- anything else to look for and ask about?
Sounds like somebody’s retaining a little water.
Why would ANYONE post such a stupid comment. ?
I agree
Must be water retention …
Do they have a category to advertise three wheelers for sale ?
Like the Grinnall Scorpion ??
Those six exhaust pipes should look pretty good (ala Benelli 750 SEI). Can a picture be posted that shows them off better?
Calm down, bitches- give RC30FREAK a break. He always means well. It wasn’t really a stupid comment- just not helpful, insightful, or interesting to anyone but him. A lot of people ramble on or comment publicly when they see bikes they owned 20-30+ years ago. You know, they feel compelled to let us all know about their sister’s boyfriend who had one and wrecked it drunk, or they had one back in the day and did this or that to it, on and on and on. Understandable. Just really not interesting or very enlightening. Solid information, values, and knowledge on an enlightened level about collectible bikes is what I come here to read, ladies.
Wow, looks like we have a real expert in the room.(Mikethebike) Why don’t you entertain us all with your vast experience. We’ll wait.
MikeTheBike must have a bike with more cylinders than a CBX because he sure exhausts alot of hot air ! Thanks to my supporters here . Have a slice of humble pie there MikeTheBike . BTW the stupid comment was all on you dude . Also the air you breathe up there at that altitide can we say HighHorse !) must be affecting your motor skills you silly man .
someone’s panties are in a wad. good luck with the sale of your bike.
I owned one of the first 79 red CBX’s brought into the country. Fantastic motor and what a sound. The tiny forks and swing arm made for some interesting tank slappers in the fast sweepers but…oh that sound. I recently had an occasion to speak to one of the head techs at Barber who said the engines are not too dissimilar to the 250 and 350 6 cylinders that Hailwood and Redman rode back in the 60’s The seat reminded me a little of my OW TZ 750 and the bike was quite the novelty at the time. They are still cool if you can get a good one for a fair price.
Hey Slangbuster . I can relate to that . I had a stock 79′ ….sounded like a Porsche 911…so smooth. Brakes were like two bricks……you had to really plan ahead . My red 79″ had a Hooker 6-1 with basically no baffle (it sounded more like a Ferrari !) . It had a bash plate welded underneath @ its lowest point . It actually had less ground clearance than a Lamborghini ! I remember doing a photo shoot with my friend @ an industrial park and actually getting the rear wheel off the ground leaned over . Seems I was leaned over so far I actually was sliding on the bash plate and just the front tire ! Also my bike was built by a former Formula Atlantic car mechanic so my bike was braced and gusseted at all the points of the frame . It did seem to handle better than a stock bike . See a guy like MikeTheBike is against having fun , and bantering here . He is the type that would rather quote : “slap out them bitches” ….end quote ! Different strokes for different folks , eh ! 🙂
Douchebag.
