15 Years Old Already?! 1998 Yamaha YZF-R1

Update 8.9.2013: Originally we posted this R1 in February. It has been relisted a few times but is now showing a buy-it-now of $7k, which seems closer to what the market will bear. Links updated. Happy Friday, -dc

1998 Yamaha R1 For Sale Red White

It seems hard to believe that the original R1 is now 15 years old, probably because it still evokes a strong emotion when spotted — especially in the white on red! With 150hp stock and 448lbs wet, it’s no wonder why it was so attractive then and why it is still intriguing today.

This particular example has only 4700 miles but has been in storage and the seller reports that it will need some attention to get it road ready. The buy-it-now is set at a lofty $8500, but I suspect that is more intended to keep low-ballers out of the seller’s inbox. Hopefully a realistic offer will find this bike a new home.

From the seller:

The rare one and most sought after in RED WHITE number 79. SUPER LOW MILES just 4,738 original miles. Has after market pipe but i still have the original one that came with the bike. super fast. Bike has been stored since 2011 so fuel has lost its octane already so you will need to flush and add new fuel. new battery has original tires but i also have a new set that will go with the bike. Bike will start but missing due to fuel octane lost during storage.Bike has never been dropped and adult driving only. Never raced or mistreated.

1998 Yamaha R1 with less than 5000 Miles

1998 Yamaha R1 For Sale

Dressed in what most consider a very attractive color scheme, we have a mostly original 98 Yamaha R1 for sale in Texas with just 4700 miles. This color combo always seems to make potential buyers wonder why they didn’t buy one the first time around when they were originally launched. If you’re in that category you may be in luck as this bike represents a very low mileage opportunity. While the aftermarket pipe isn’t optimal, the original is available with sale. This one looks stock otherwise. While $8500 might seem a bit on the high side, it won’t be long before this is commonplace with this revolutionary model.

Ride it like Russel Part 2: 2008 Yamama YZF-R1 Race Bike

2008 Yamaha R1 Scott Russell

This is the second 2008 ex-Scott Russel Yamaha R1 race bike we’ve seen up for grabs, and this one is reportedly the backup bike. The seller gives very little detail and Mike’s questions from the other post regarding the livery still stand. This one has a buy-it-now of $12,500 and a current bid of $7850 reserve not met.

2006 Yamaha YZF-R1 50th Anniversary LE #260 of 500 For Sale!

2006 Yamaha YZF-R1 50th Anniversary LE #260 of 500

Location: Chandler, AZ
Mileage: 19,500
Price: $9,250 with reserve

I can definitely see myself rock’n one of these at some point before I get old and arthritis sets in. Everyone that I’ve talked, who owns one, says they absolutely love it and it’s a rocket ship when allowed to breathe.

They look the part and I can only assume act the part with all of the upgrades that they came from the factory with. Ohlins, Brembo along side Marchesini top the distinguished list and add plenty of bling to the racer replica paint scheme.

This one is well used with 19,500 miles, but looks to be well taken care of alongside all of the fun that was had.

We can only assume that in 20 or so years these will be highly sought after bikes by those that snubbed them 5 short years ago. Perhaps these are the modern day RC30 and will appreciate beyond any ones wildest dreams. Only time will tell, but if you want to experience it on the cheap may I suggest picking one up now to avoid the long lines 20 years from now.

From the seller:

> This bike is numbered #260 out of only 500 shipped to the United States
> Bike has been meticulously maintained, with Motul oil changes every 3,000 miles
> Bike is largely stock with only minimal modifications made since its purchase in 2005
> Bike has been garaged and covered
> Includes rear stand and all stock parts
> Includes original owner’s manual and “riding tips” brochure
> Slight scuff marks on upper right fairing (barely visible)
> Full Ti-Force titanium exhaust system

***ALL STOCK PARTS ARE INCLUDED WITH THE SALE OF THIS BIKE***

1998 Yamaha YZF R1 for sale

Location: L.A., California
Mileage: 10,640
Price: active bidding or $7,000 B.I.N

Yes, 7k is all the cheese for this one, but it looks to be in great shape and well cared for.

The owner is selling it as “100% stock, well almost stock”.

A full compliment of seats, including the front, rear, and solo cowl in both Black, and Red colors.

520 chain conversion, utilizing a Renthal hard anodized rear sprocket and lightened front sprocket, with a DID ERV3 X-Ring Chain.

Muzzy’s aluminum radiator fan, for (surprisingly legit!) increased cooling and reliability.

I also installed a brand-new OEM oil pan when I purchased the bike, because I found a helli-coil used in the oil drain plug to cover up stripped threads. I replaced the entire pan, with gasket, etc., of course.

Exceedingly rare, almost entirely unknown, GYTR Ohlins side-mount steering damper. You can see in the pics. Due to concerns over head-shake from the constant wheelies and absurdly short wheelbase, Yamaha made a stop-gap steering damper mount, and factory cut faux-carbon fairing piece, to accommodate Ohlins dampers, within weeks of launch and before the full commercial after-market units became available.

When I saw this today I got all giddy inside and remembered days gone by when these were king the hill. I wanted one so bad I could taste it, but they were all sold out and I had cash burning a hole in my pocket so I opted for the ZX9R. I don’t regret it, but I’m always on the prowl for one of these just in case my wife leaves the checkbook unguarded.

I don’t think these have quite matured just yet, but there are plenty of guys like me who are looking for the one that got away. These were bad a** back in the day and for me they still look very modern and capable.

If you’re like me and always searching for “The one that got away” and yours just happens to be a red and white YZF R1-

Cheers!
