This 1986 Suzuki GSXR-750 has been set up perfectly, and stands alone as a really cool old motorcycle that is made cooler by its pedigreed bloodline. It has been endowed with a wider rear wheel from its 1,100cc stablemate, as well as a raft of functional improvements but reversible mods.

THE 1st True Superbike that started it all.

One of the finest “surviving” examples you’ll find, of what is arguably THE most significant Sportbike ever. Simply put, the first Gen 750 STARTED the “race bike with blinkers” revolution of aluminum framed, race technology with comfort taking a back seat. And while the rare homologation specials like the RC30 and OWO1 of the era may have their technical advantages or collector value, they, and quite frankly everything that followed, were ALL in response to THIS motorcycle. There are very few “1st’s” in this world and this is one.

Anyone serious enough to be looking at this knows these Icons rarely come along in this kind of condition without a full restoration. This example is truly a testament to the Quality of Suzuki when cared for accordingly for 33 years. The Bike shows very minimal patina which only adds to the luster of “original”. Engine, Carbs, Frame, Body, Oil Cooler and Electrical ALL look closer to 3 than 33 years old. It’s safe to assume this bike has always been stored indoors and even question how much rain it’s seen. I am guessing that the windshield and both lowers must be new(er) as they are practically showroom. The only portion of the bodywork to receive any work is a fresh Clear-Coat on the tank and Solo Cowl, both professionally done and BEAUTIFUL ! Other than that, everything looks to be Original. Simply Amazing.

I have a small collection of stunning Sportbikes and this Bike is truly a Stand-Out. A “Best in Show” Trophy in 2018 says it all considering the modern era Customs it was competing with.

I have owned the bike for going on 6 years, give or take, and have put just over 500 miles total on it. Essentially a ride in the spring, 1 in the Summer and one in Fall.

Suspension, including Gold Valves up Front, Sprung for 200lb rider with new seals & Oil and a Gorgeous, Period Correct Fox Twin Clicker with an 1100 Lower Pivot link. Thicker Fork Brace. This bike comes with ALL OE Partsincluding (but not limited to): 2 Original Keys, Near Mint Stock Exhaust, OE Black Wheels w/tires, Air Box and Filter, Shock, Pivot Link, front and rear Fenders, Near Mint Original Masters & Levers, Tool Kit, Blinkers, Mirrors, Grab-Bar and related brackets etc.. everything needed to return to stock and all in fantastic condition. Bike is currently set up as you see simply for personal preference and sold as is. I also typically remove the Mirrors whether on display or a ride, as this is a notoriously week area on the Fairing and it’s not worth the risk.

Patina
You’ll see the last 3 pics of minor blems/flaws. Small crack on the right upper fairing by the mirror mount. A small crack on the left mid by the front bolt hole which has been reinforced with Epoxy on the back side. Also, both “R” tank emblems have a hair-line crack trough them. These are common issues with the Slabby’s but have not gotten any worse while I’ve owned it.

You’ll be hard pressed to find a nicer example of THE ORIGINAL that still sees the road on a regular basis.

As the video shows, it has nothing to hide. As the photos show, the “patina” is negligible, making this the perfect choice for a rider/collector. The first-generation Gixxers are getting rarer and rarer, so the changes will no doubt be a little controversial, but the seller has stressed that ALL the stock parts are included, so an all-original restored bike is certainly possible with this one.

Featured Listing: 1998 Bimota SB6R for Sale

Today’s Featured Listing is a bit of a flashback. We posted this very clean Bimota SB6R in April of last year and, although it didn’t sell at the time, the owner has been doing what you should do with an Italian exotic: enjoying it, racking up an additional 1,300 miles. That means it’s still collector-bike low with just 4,250 miles in total, but the fact that the seller has been riding it should be a big selling point for anyone looking to buy a 90s Bimota. Too many of these bikes sit, admired and displayed instead of being used in anger, slowly succumbing to neglect. Sculptural they may be, but Italian bikes were meant to be ridden.

Bimota made its name building cutting-edge racebikes, but the SB6R is first and foremost a roadbike. Utilizing Suzuki’s powerful and bulletproof liquid-cooled GSX-R1100 engine that displaced 1074cc, the SB6R wasn’t really eligible for many racing classes. But it was used the very best, competition-worthy components available at the time, with triple Brembo brakes, a Paioli fork up front and an Öhlins shock fitted almost horizontally, and was built with Bimota’s usual attention to detail, using  Lotus-founder Colin Chapman’s philosophy: “light makes right.”

With a claimed 156hp from the eminently tunable Gixxer motor pushing a claimed dry weight of just 419lbs, the SB6R is a massively capable roadbike that can easily keep up with modern machines. Keep in mind that the SB6R weighs nearly 100lbs less than the famously fast GSX-R that was powered by the same engine. The flexible powerplant is backed by Suzuki’s five-speed gearbox that takes advantage of the bike’s huge midrange and 74 lb-ft of torque.

As always with a Bimota, the frame is the real star of the show, something casual observers might overlook at first, with all the curvy carbon fiber bodywork on display. But once you notice those massive aluminum spars, they become the bike’s defining feature. The design utilizes Bimota’s “Straight Connection Technology” concept that prioritizes as direct a link as possible between the steering head and the swingarm pivot. It’s not the most practical way to design and build a frame, but Bimota’s goal was ultimate performance, and the matching, asymmetrical swingarm even has “bimota” embossed in one side for an extra does of craftsmanship.

Make no mistake, this was one of the fastest and most exotic motorcycles of the 1990s. Just 600 were ever made, and the model’s life was cut tragically short when Suzuki discontinued the GSX-R1100, then Bimota’s first bankruptcy ended any dreams of a GSX-R1000 powered follow up. It’s a shame, because the earlier SB6 was one of their best-selling models and I much prefer the looks of the later SB6R. This example has serial number 000023 and includes a lightweight Corse exhaust, a very nice bonus. If you want a different exhaust for your SB6R at this point, pretty much your only other option would be something completely custom.

I can’t stress enough how this one’s recent mileage is critical. Many low-mileage collector bikes have spent a lot of time sitting, and will require hefty sums to get them truly road-worthy again: seals, hoses, gaskets, o-rings, gas tanks, tires… It all adds up. That’s fine if you just want to display your exotic, and Bimotas certainly look good standing still. But these really were meant to run, and if you want a collectible you can also take out on weekends to blitz the back roads, this one’s $11,500 asking price is a relative bargain, considering that the SB6R cost a whopping $35,000 in 1998!

Get Lucky: 1996 Suzuki RGV250 SP VJ-23

For the Suzuki RGV250’s last few model years, Suzuki gave the popular machines a thorough redesign, with updated fairings and a brand-new 70-degree v-twin replacing the long serving 90-degree mill that helped make the bikes famous. In most trims, they were choked down to around 40 horsepower. But a limited number of Lucky Strike liveried V-Spec models left the home country with fully de-restricted engines that made closer to 70 horsepower. With just 345 pounds to move around when fully fueled, they were giant killers.

The RGV 250 had a long history as a popular club racer and track day machine, as well as a sly way to satisfy tiered licensing requirements and still have some fun. They sold in their millions outside the United States, though, sadly, they never officially made it to these shores. Older models with U.S. street titles pop up pretty regularly, but anything newer than 25 years old will have some issues getting a road title. This 1996 Suzuki RGV250 lives in South Africa, so getting paperwork lined up to ride it here could be tricky, unless you’re willing to wait.

According to the listing, the bike is all original and has had a full engine rebuild inside the last 1,000 miles. It appears to be in excellent condition, from the fairings to the frame and running gear. The pictures show it set up as a one-seater, but from the photos it looks like the pillion pad and tools come with it. If you’re looking for a very rare, very cool conversation piece that will be eligible for a street title in just two years, you may have found your steed.

For those readers of a certain age, the 1980s were an amazing time to ride. Motorcycles were making quantum leaps in terms of performance, and technology was reshaping the design elements that we take for granted today. Take for example this wonderful 1986 Suzuki GSX-R1100. Only two years previous one of the top dogs of the sport bike world was the GPz1100 – an air cooled, two valve per cylinder dinosaur that had became technologically extinct. And while Honda went full bore into the world of liquid cooling (along with a size and weight penalty), Suzuki gambled with an innovative solution of air/oil cooling, saving precious weight and creating the lightest of the heavyweight hitters.

The Suzuki Advanced Cooling System (SACS) employed two oil pumps, an enlarged sump to hold additional oil, and an oversized oil cooler. By employing the engine oil as both a lubricating medium as well as a cooling source Suzuki reduced the complexity of the GSX-R while also reducing weight. And this was no accident: Suzuki experimented and developed the concept in the revolutionary (and rare) XN85 Turbo. A close look at the early GSX-R engine cases and heads show the same fins as utilized by air-cooled motors, this being used as a secondary form of cooling (and both free and lightweight). The rest of the motor was closely based off of the original GSX-R750, but with larger bores and various changes to handle the additional stress. With four valves per cylinder fed by four Mikuni flat slide carbs, the big Gen I Gixxer offered 125 horsepower through a 5-speed transmission. That was enough for high 10s in the quarter and a top speed in the 155 mile per hour range. Heady stuff indeed.

While the GSX-R750 blazed the trail, the GSX-R1100 followed with subtle changes. The overall dimension of the bike was necessarily bigger. However the aluminum square-section frame was similar (thicker walls and different dimensions in critical areas) during a time when aluminum was space-aged, magical and mysterious stuff. The Full Floater single shock rear suspension was a massive upgrade over twin shock designs, and offered rebound adjustment and an eccentric rising rate linkage. Up front the 41mm forks offered electrically operated anti-dive which was a decided improvement over hydraulic units. Tires on both ends were 18 inchers, the trendy GP 16 inch hoops blessedly a thing of the past. Bodywork was straight off the starting line of an Endurance event, with large, flat side sections and dual headlamps (a massive distinguishing element back then). The four into one exhaust signaled the sporting intent of this machine, as did the triple disk brakes (twin four piston calipers up front, a dual piston caliper out back).

The early GSX-Rs are often referred to as “Slabbies” given the slab-sided nature of the bodywork. They are instantly recognizable and have become tremendously collectible. This particular example shows only 5,100 miles on the clock, and is extremely well kept. Many of these bikes found their way to the race track (these were fantastic club racers, along with the 750), or were thrashed, crashed and sold – repeat cycle as necessary. And while today’s bike is not wearing original paint, the paint that is there is attractive and subtle – looking close to a stocker, but with a little extra class. The rare solo seat cover is color matched. There is an upgraded pipe installed as well, making this a period correct and clean Slabbie versus a 100% original and NOS stocker. But that needn’t be a negative, as those who ride are more concerned with a clean and functional bike than a collectible garage queen. This is about as clean a Gen I rider that you could hope to find, has a cool history as described by the owner, and is near enough to stock to pass off as a wonderful example of the breed. Featured Listing: 1983 Suzuki GS1100E

Today’s featured listing is something of a departure from our usual fare, but if you can’t figure out why we jumped at the chance to feature this beautiful beast, you’re in the wrong place. As the seller will detail later, it’s from the dawn of the Golden Age of sportbikes, before fairings, but after AMA Superbike had sparked rabid passion for roadracing. In the wake of bikes like the Kawasaki Z1-R, the GS1100E helped build the bridge between the big four-cylinder bikes of the 1970s and the fully-faired featherweights that popped up in the late ’80s. The factories had started to figure out adequate frames, suspension and brakes, but smaller, fatter tires and perimeter alloy frames were still a ways off.

I should at this juncture give something of a disclaimer. Bikes of this ilk were my introduction to motorcycling; my first-ever motorcycle was a 1982 Kawasaki GPz 750. I miss it. This beautiful Suzuki is a hell of a lot more bike than my GPz was, but it’s aimed at the same target. With stump-pulling, air-cooled power, a comfortable upright seating position and decent brakes and suspension, it was equal parts friendly street bike and fire-breathing animal.

This 1983 Suzuki GS1100E has done 28,000 miles, but has been incredibly well cared for, and as a result is in great cosmetic condition, especially for its age and mileage. The classic red-and-black paint scheme is a hallmark of the period, and it looks the absolute ticket here. Even the carbs got a thick coat of gloss black. Inspired. The engine, brakes, tires and driveline have either been updated or confirmed to be in good condition. The list of downsides is short, but includes a non-functioning anti-dive valve and no fuel gauge.

The 1983 Suzuki GS1100E has often been referred to as the original Superbike, the start of era of massive power, good brakes, light weight and defining sport bike handling. It was the dawn of an era of what we take for granted today, Sport Bikes that have evolved from these humble, but significant beginnings.

Our 1983 model is in the rare black and red color scheme with 28,000 miles showing. It is cosmetically extremely stock and in very good order right down to the stock exhaust system, a rarity today. The engine is the 108hp, 1074cc “TSCC” (Twin Swirl Combustion Chamber) DOHC. It ran a four Valve per Cylinder Head with a Roller Crank that proved its self bullet proof while setting numerous huge high horse power drag racing records. The stock engine was known for its strong, wide bottom end horse power and torque, making it an easy bike to live with on the street.

Our bike has just had a major service done to it by a long time, local GS expert. The valves have been checked and adjusted as needed, new plugs installed and the carbs cleaned, adjusted and sync’d. The brakes have been flushed, pads inspected, chain and sprockets inspected and adjusted and the tires are in good order. Over all, the bike is a great vintage Japanese sport bike that can be ridden, rather than hauled in a trailer for shows and display.

The upside and downsides to this bike. The inside of the gas tank looks brand new. It is the 108hp 4 valve engine. The bikes are getting scarce these days and to find one in this stock, good condition is a rare moment. The plastic side covers do not have any of the mounting tabs broken off (where you can see them until you take them off). All of the lights and gauges work and it comes with the owner’s manual. The bike runs well and needs nothing today except good weather and fuel. The downsides. The forks are soft because the Anti-Dive Valve is not working. There is no center stand. There is no factory tool kit. The right Fork Cap has some cosmetic damage to it. There is no fuel gauge and last but not least, it was ridden and because of that, it now has 28,000 miles on it.

Slingshot Gixxers have gained value over the last couple years on the strength of their reputation as basically the earliest available fully modern street legal sportbike. Short of an astronomically expensive RC30, a late ’80s GSX-R is about as close as you’ll get to a vintage bike that rides like something from this century. Beyond that, they carry a mystique born of their world-beating pace when new. The awe they inspired when they debuted has evolved into full-on legend status.

With the help of redesigned fairings and suspension, 17-inch rubber and a new rack of flatslide Mikunis, the ’88 Gixxer burst on the scene with technology and pace that was unheard of at the time, especially for something so light. Back then, the lack of water cooling didn’t raise any eyebrows, though Suzuki did have to get creative with oil cooling to keep the things running properly. The 750cc inline four commanded 112 horses in street trim, and the bodywork had been slickened to reduce the mill’s effort.

This 1988 Suzuki GSX-R 750 is in unrestored, original condition, except for some exhaust and airbox mods. Whereas many of these bikes are either hammered or babied, this one strikes a nice balance of looking like a bike that was well looked-after, but ridden as it should have been and stored without huge regard for the cosmetics. If you’re looking for a rider and you don’t care about looks too much, seek no more. If you’re looking for an easy restoration that doesn’t require a nut-and-bolt re-work, here’s your steed. The seller is quite proud that the bike rides on its original tires, but we’d have those suckers swapped out in a heartbeat.

1988 GSX-R 750 Slingshot. This is a true Survivor, never been touched with the exception of the exhaust. Runs and performs perfectly. I do have the original air box also. Original tires that are in excellent condition for their age. The tires tell the story of this bike, it has been rode less than 500 miles a year. Some of the clear is peeling from decales (normal for the age of the bike). Right fairing has crack by lamp (see pic) and solo seat has small crack in rear, quick fix if you want but, I would leave it alone as bike is a survivor! Hate to see this bike go but, must make room and that is the only reason while it is going up for sale! I will listen to any reasonable offers!

At $5,000, the asking price is right at what Hagerty says an excellent example should go for. With fairly low miles, great patina and rising interest in these machines, he might not be too far off.

Partly Lucky: 1992 Suzuki RGV 250

Pity the US-based two-stroke fan. Few models were ever officially imported into the US, and those that did hit our shores only lasted for a couple of years. And while we should be happy we ever got them at all, vitally missing were the hard-edged smokers and the big bore machines. Casting eyes northward, we could watch our Canadian neighbors ring-a-ding-ding and pop and smoke with glee – but this was all from the tree of carnal knowledge for stateside riders. Until bikes started to get old enough to import, that is. And even with used-bike age laws, there are still large areas of the country where these machines are verbotten (you Californians, otherwise too cool, got staunched on this one). As the laws of supply and demand go, where there is no supply there is capacity for high demand, which leads us to today’s 1992 Suzuki RGV250.

Suzuki smokers started life out at parallel twins, but it was soon realized that the vee configuration offered several benefits. Perfect primary balance, for starters. A smaller, narrower profile aided in aerodynamics. And finally, the configuration lent itself to moving weight around in the chassis as Suzuki sought to achieve the perfect weight distribution. So effective was the RGV that Aprilia first bought engines from Suzuki, then built their own clones under license, and then finally engineered their own modification to the platform. For Suzuki models, figure about 55-60 wild horses – once the tach swings up towards 11,000. That is for an exported model, such as this Canadian steed. Home market bikes are restricted and have less. With a dry weight in the 280 pound range, there is plenty of motive power to make this fun.

Absolutely superb VJ 22A in really nice condition. Well maintained and well taken care of, wheels and asymmetrical swing-arm recently powder coated, forks not rusted no pitting, all consumables ready to go (brakes, chain, sprockets and tires). The carburation has been cleaned out, jets changed in 2018. The bike is located in Quebec city Canada and comes with a Quebec ownership (equivalent of a title). The bike comes with a box of spare parts (lower engine case, clutch lever, some handlebar controls). All in all an excellent machine very well preserved. I am more than willing to either take care of the export process/shipping or help out with it. I can even drive across the border and meet on the US side. For the US buyer, I provide all necessary documentation to ensure smooth transition past the border but whatever pertains to your county DMV is the buyer’s responsibility.

The well-sorted twin is encased in a chassis complete with GP-racing amenities: twin-spar lightweight aluminum frame rails, nifty asymmetrical banana swing arm, stacked exhaust pipes, and trick (for the time) upside down forks. This was meant to be a racer for the streets, and with the proper livery one could imagine playing Kevin Schwantz at every roundabout. Which leads us to the primary issue with this particular offering: It has quasi-Lucky Strike colors, but is missing some key graphics. This leads to questions regarding whether it is a true LS, or simply a bodywork swap. Perhaps it is a legit LS but was rebuilt as the result of crash damage (the box of spare parts that comes with the sale could indicate same). The 22,000 km (sub 14,000 miles) on the all metric clocks is not that concerning, but as always, interested buyers are cautioned to do their homework.

This particular RGV is located in Quebec City, which means that US buyers will need to perform some paperwork in order to legally bring it in. Fortunately this seller appears to be familiar with this process, and has offered both shipping options as well as trailering the bike into the US. As always, registering the bike in your home state is the responsibility of the buyer. When it comes to the DMV, Californians need not apply (unless you know a guy). But for many US buyers, this is a legitimate way to own a quarter liter two stroke built during the height of two stroke tech. Check out the auction here. Bidding is only up to $2,850 with reserve still in place, but depending on where that is set this could be a relative bargain to get yourself into the game. Some restoration work will be in order to complete the Lucky Strike graphics, but if the mechanicals are in decent shape you could hoon this to the moon. Good (partial) Luck!!

Before we start and this gets out of hand, you *might* remember when you could buy one of these for $12. Or $1500. Or maybe even $10k. Those days are gone. The fact is this sub 10,000 mile RG500 Walter Wolf edition Gamma is on eBay for just a tad shy of $33,000. And while the market will vote with the wallet, it doesn’t really matter if this bike sells. You see, the market has already spoken in the form of the motorcycle auctions held in Las Vegas in late January. There, record prices were realized for all sorts of stuff that you might remember selling for a lot cheaper. The market is up, and the stuff we like to collect is rising on that tide. Thus, we are looking at a very expensive 1986 Gamma in rare clothing.

Beneath the purple, red and gold paint and beyond the white faced gauges, a Walter Wolf Gamma is really just a Gamma. That is to say, it is a marvelous twin-crank, square four two stroke that rips like it came straight off the racetrack. This was the unobtanium treat that US buyers were categorically denied. Enterprising enthusiasts soon learned to import the RG as a used bike – often from just over our northern border – and hooligan behavior ensued. Along with blue smoke and the sound that only a two stroke on the pipe can make.

Rare Suzuki RG500 Walter Wolf Limited Edition!

If not familiar with the Walter Wolf, the bikes were never sold in the US. Approximately 100 were sold in Canada. This example here was imported from Alberta BC. This bike sits in my collection and is in excellent condition, with only 15665 km (9734 miles). The bike is free of common stress cracks around the various panel mounting points. Tires have good tread although I would recommend replacing if plans are to ride the bike.

The instrument housing foam shows some deformation, however a new replacement will be included along with a service manual. This bike is an excellent clean example of a Walter Wolf to ride or put in a collection! If not familiar with the value of Walter Wolf’s, included in the pictures is a recent sale. This bike showed 33400km.

Walter Wolf was a Canadian business man and something of a motor sport legend. Originally from Austria but self made in Canada as an oil man, Wolf poured his money into racing – investing in Frank William’s Formula 1 team and running his own Wolf Racing F1 operation. He had the money and the drive, and sponsored both automobile as well as motorcycle racing. Today, the Wolf brand is celebrated by a couple of different branded products – such as this wonderful Walter Wolf RG500, a tribute of Wolf colors and logos. The Walter Wolf Edition RG500 (there was also a 400 and 250 model) was released to the home market (in power restricted format) as well as Canada (estimated 100 units) and Western Europe. There are slight differences between each of the market-specific models largely due to local regulations (i.e. headlights, turn signals, etc). Japanese market bikes utilize a specific WW gauge package, while Canadian bikes make due with stock RG units. Logo placement is also slightly different between the markets.

Real and authentic WW models are few and far between. We have seen WW replicas on these pages before, so buyers do your homework, research and analysis up front. With only a graphics package separating a rare Wolf from a regular RG, it is not that difficult to build a replica. Today’s WW RG500 looks pretty clean, has enough miles to be a rider without so many as to be clapped out. Check it out here, although the pictures are (unfortunately) low res. I’m sure there will be many comments about how absurd the price is, but the seller counters with a photo directly from the Mecum auctions. Haters will hate, but the Las Vegas auction is the bellwether for collector pricing – and as of today, prices are running high. Hard to tell if there is enough here to ignite the kind of bidding war that drive top auction prices, but for now there is a very rare and cool Walter Wolf edition RG500 Gamma waiting for you on eBay. And you didn’t even have to go to Vegas. Good Luck!!
