Another 30 Year Old: 1984 Yamaha RZ350

Official poll: Who is starting to feel old? Can you imagine that this RZ350, the last officially imported street legal two stroke in the US, is pushing the big three-0? Does that make you want one any less? I didn’t think so.

1984 Yamaha RZ350 for sale on eBay

This RZ looks to have had a busy life. The seller notes that it is on its 4th overbore. If you are an optimist, that spells more capacity! But then, two strokes have always been about the ease of top end servicing, and honing/re-boring is not an uncommon practice. Looks like this owner knew a bit about what he was doing, and there are some tasty mods to this ride.

From the seller:
1984 yamaha Kenny Roberts special 21k miles… And still riding.. Fresh top end bore.. Pistons pins brgs etc.. Less than 100 miles!!!
Full spec 2 fiberglass fairing.nose has 4 small drill holes as seen in close up …RARE!! Factory SOLO seat cowl and original clutch plates.. Motor on 4th YAMAHA crankshaft+ clutch basket
On last re-build 7k ago.. Motor has full TOOMEY porting from the 90s … Shaved head .40 aftermarket chambers NEW and reeds.. Rebuilt
Carbs with toomey kit in them.. This bike is FAST!!! Idles smooth all day.. Rebuilt oil pump..braided brake lines, steering stabilizer ,fork brace
Rebuilt forks and tapered head brgs installed..I have owned this bike the last 22 year.. Exept a 4 year stint with my friend.. Now it’s back … It WAS on the track back in the day .. Never crashed there!!..fell over in lot once.. Needs only new tires… Ready to GO
Tank repainted and is truly FLAWLESS !! Seat perfect.. No tear…. Everthing works.. Goes and stops GREAT! ALL fluids fresh ..
Clear clear NJ title in hand .. bike in NC ……those funny red marks on a couple pics ..are on the camera.. NOT..the bike
Delivery to bike week daytona available for a $$
Original tool kit and POUCH with strap .. In place…
Starts on FIRST KICK!

Prices have been on the rise for a decent RZ350 – and this one definitely applies. Current bid is below $4,000 at time of writing, making this a potential bargain RZ. The Spec 2 fairing is a nice touch, Toomey mods are period correct, and overall this is what you might expect to find when it comes to a bike this age that has been truly enjoyed. This machine is now looking for its next home. Any room in your stable? Check out the details here.

1989 Yamaha RZ350 now available in Texas

Update 4.13.2014: Having failed to sell in it’s first auction with a high bid of $5800, the RZ350 is back on eBay with a high bid of $5100 and over 4 days remaining. Links updated. -dc

Readers of this site are no strangers to the cult classic RZ350, but this Canadian import is a bit different with it’s full fairing and very blue paint scheme. I went through our archives and we’ve only posted these a handful of times, and most were still in Canada whereas this one is titled in Texas. Showing just 7200 miles on the clock, this example has obviously been well looked after in it’s 25 years judging from the pictures (available in high resolution in the gallery below) and is stated as garaged it’s entire life.

from the seller:

1989 Yamaha RZ350 Canadian import bike. Clean Texas Title in hand. Perfect condition bike. Recently serviced and tuned. No scratches or dents. 9.9 out of 10. This one is a collectors bike. It has 11601 km (7208 miles) on it. Never ridden in the rain. Garaged it’s entire life with me. Time to move and no room for this one. Sad to see it go.

Even Kenny would approve: 1984 Yamaha RZ350

Previously sold at $10k, this one is back due to a non-paying bidder. Bid to win! Links updated. -dc

Always a fan favorite, a clean RZ usually sells itself. Interest is always high and prices are definitely on the rise. This is a classic machine, a legal two stroke in the US, and continues to be a unique ride despite its age. This bike shows only 534 miles on the odometer, some rash from use over the years, and is looking for a new home.

From the seller:
1984 Yamaha RZ350 Kenny Roberts Edition with 534 ORIGINAL miles !!!!

Look at the pictures closely and you will notice on the Fender, Tank, and Upper Front Fairing there are very minor blemishes other than that this thing is a crème puff head turner, Even Kenny would approve.

Ok boys here’s the deal…it was kept garaged all of its life and starts on Second Kick Cold. Ridden occasionally to keep fluids fresh. Brakes are a little sticky but nothing that cant be remedied by a little service, no leaks. Engine looks really good. Aftermarket Exhaust by AllSpeed Hyperformance I do not have the originals.

Check the pictures they speak for themselves for a 29 year old collectors bike.

This looks to be a pretty honest bike. It has some blems (some considerably more than minor) but overall is what you would expect from a 30 year old used bike. So what’s the catch? How about an opening bid of $9,999?! We see perfect (or nearly so) RZs top this amount, but this auction is starting out on the high side – and is likely scaring bidders off. Is this a fishing expedition on the part of the seller? Possibly. Check it out here and let us know what you think. Good Luck!

4100 Mile Yamaha RZ350 available in Texas

1984 Yamaha RZ350 for sale

The tried and true RSBFS fan favorite Yamaha RZ350! This is a wonderful example with very low original miles and near spotless condition to match. The owner details that it’s likely wearing original tires and spent much of it’s life in a collection. A couple small scratches are also noted but upon closer inspection you’d be hard pressed not to describe this one as excellent. It has 3 days remaining and has crossed $6k reserve not met.

1984 Yamaha RZ350 for sale on eBay

from the seller:

This RZ350 is the Kenny Roberts Edition with the yellow and black color scheme. This bike is in excellent condition and runs great. Typicall starts on the first or second kick. It is virtually all original with rare non-catalytic stock pipes I purchased from RZ’s Unlimited. My understanding is these pipes were sold on non US units that did not have all the EPA restrictions the US models had. They are much lighter and make the bike run much better but still keep the stock look. The gas tank is flawless and the other body panels are very close. The only minor defects are a couple of scratches on the front fender and some dry rot on the front tire (i believe the tires are original).

I purchased this bike from a collector a few years ago and just have not had the time to play with it like I thought I would. It is a rare find and I will miss it terribly.

Legalized Smoking: 1984 Yamaha RZ350 Kenny Roberts Edition in Utah

1984 Yamaha RZ350 for sale on eBay

One of the more common – yet popular – bikes we post on this site is the Yamaha RZ350. Known as the last of the legal two strokes available in the USA – including in the smog-choked Repulic of California – the RZ has a rabid following. It is becoming a serious collector bike as well, and we are watching prices rise on moderately-used machinery, and sky-rocket on pristine and museum bikes.

From the seller:
This RZ350 is the Kenny Roberts Edition with the yellow, black and white paint. The US banned two stroke street bikes after 1984 so this is one of the last legally imported two stroke bikes sold in the US. The bike is a great everyday rider. I had the top and bottom end rebuilt about 1500 miles ago so it runs great and is fast! New crank, and pistons. It has very nice dent-free aftermarket pipes, a fork stabilizer, and is ready to rip.

There are some nice bits on this bike (Telefix fork brake, aftermarket expansion chambers), and some not so good bits (a fair bit of rust and remnants of Father Time). Still, it looks to be a workable example that is deserving of some love. This bike is being offered with a reasonable opening ask of $3,495 and a BIN of $4,600 for those who need their instant gratification right now. Click the link to check out all of the details on this legal little smoker. Good Luck!

Who’s on your fender? 1984 Yamaha RZ350 with signatures

Up for grabs is one really awesome front fender signed by a number of famous racers and suitable for framing on any wall of your house, garage, man cave or hangar. That really cool fender is attached to a 1984 Yamaha RZ350 that unfortunately cannot live up to the promise of the signage up front. All in all it is a neat package, but if you have your hopes set on a museum RZ, best to look elsewhere. The real question is whether or not a sharpie on paint brings any more cash at auction.

1984 Yamaha RZ350 for sale on eBay

We have seen very pristine examples of these classic RZs. This bike looks to be an honest 12k+ mile example, complete with weathered decals, some oxidation, a faded dash and the normal knocks and dings that seem to happen to bikes of this age. The seller notes a top-end rebuild and some interesting changes, but basic components remain intact (including the rare and heavy catalytic converters).

From the seller:
What’s up for bid is what I think is a very unique 1984 Yamaha RZ350 two-stroke street bike, Kenny Roberts Special. They only made these for two model years in the USA, 1984 and 1985.

But what sets this bike apart from the others is I took the from fender with me to the Laguna Seca MotoGP races in 2005, which was Yamaha’s 50th anniversary. Yamaha had on hand many of their most famous factory racers. I waited in line for 2 hours each day to get the following racers to sign this RZ350 front fender.

In no particular order:
1. Giacomo Agostini
2. Eddie Lawson
3. Wayne Rainey
4. Randy Mamola
5. Kel Carruthers
6. Steve Baker
7. Jamie James
8. Rich Oliver
9. Thomas Stevens
10. Doug Henry

The bike itself it very stock with only some upgrades to make it more reliable and to replace failed parts (Yamaha dealer installed):
1. Upgraded main fuse box to use automotive spade type fuses which has increased electrical reliability to perfection
2. New stator from RM Stator of Quebec, Canada
3. Rebuilt (3) calipers and added stainless steel lines coated with black plastic to look stock
4. New power valve and motor
5. New top end when I bought it with only 2k miles on the rebuild
6. Oil injection works perfectly and ONLY use Amsoil synthetic oils
7. Radiator and coolant recently flushed
8. Perfect Corbin seat (comfy)

Rides, handles and stops very well. Only 351 pounds with 50 HP. Gathers a crowd wherever it’s parked. Good conversation piece and very reliable.
Don’t miss out on this beauty…I think it won’t last long.

This auction confuses me a bit. This is not a museum quality bike, despite the fact that is has the rare, original pipes – there are too many non-standard changes and damage for that. This is also not a hot-rodded bike – we have seen nicely tricked out RZs that go for a good price due to sano paintwork, pipes and upgraded gear. The signed front fender is a neat bit, but it would still be neat off the bike. In the end, this is just an average RZ – a very desired and rare bike to be sure – but not a particularly special example of the genre.

This auction is on right now and bidders are slowly waking up. In the time it took to write this article, the bike went from zero bids at the $100 opening ask to over $2,000. The BIN is set at $5,975 – which is a bit high for an RZ in this condition, but not morbidly so. If you get lucky on this auction, perhaps you can snag an extra fender from your local salvage yard and hang the signed beauty on your wall as a conversation piece. Click here to check out the signed RZ350. Good luck!
