88 Honda NSR250 Rothmans: Another CA Titled 2 Stroker

This Rothmans replica isn't as cherry as the previous one I posted, but it sounds like a perfect track day bike or even immediate rider. Especially for the $3900 asking, and listed with a title!

1988 Honda NSR250 Rothmans Replica on Craigslist:

quote from seller's Craiglist ad:

88 rothmans nsr 250 ca street legal, about as rare as can be. 260lbs and 65hp 2 stroke v-twin. been in shed for 9 months. ran perfect when put in. mechanicaly perfect. extra pistons, jugs, gaskets for future upper end rebild. It does not need one. lots of extra parts. 3 complete carb set ups. body work has old age cracks. bike needs to have carbs cleaned. I just dont have the time anymore. fastest bike Ive ever had on the track.

I like the look of this bike so much more than the 89 TZR250 I posted yesterday; not to mention the description in this ad inspires in a way the TZR will never! It's honest, the picture is decent, and I'm sorry, but it's readable. And for $3900, sounds like a screaming deal in parts alone!

1996 Honda NSR250 MC28 Repsol Replica SP For Sale in Daytona

This particular example comes with a few caveats such as some light damage on the lower fairing, needs a new oil injection pump, and a price isn't listed with the sale.  But it does state that the mechanicals have been recently refreshed and it carries the all important title.  Even more interesting is how they obtained a title for this typically gray-market import:

HOWEVER, DUE TO A LOOP HOLE, WE HAVE A UNITED STATES TITLE FOR THIS ITEM. TITLED IN FLORIDA. SO, IN THE EVENT YOU FIND ANOTHER BIKE LIKE THIS, IT IS VERY UNLIKELY TO FIND ONE WITH A TITLE ISSUED IN THE UNITED STATES. THAT MAKES OUR EVEN MORE RARE!!

Q: WHERE DID WE GET IT?
Q: HOW DO WE HAVE A TITLE?
MY WIFE DOES AUCTIONS OF ALL TYPES. SHE HAPPENED ON AN AUCTION ONE DAY OF A WAREHOUSE. SHE BOUGHT THE WHOLE CONTENTS WITH SOME ITEMS SEEN AND SOME UNSEEN. BARRIED BY BOXES AND ALL KINDS OF STUFF WAS THIS MOTORCYCLE.

THE STATE OF FLORIDA HAS A PROCESS FOR STORAGE FACILITIES TO AQUIRE TITLES FOR ABANDONDED AND OR UNPAID VEHICALS TO GO FOR SALE AND BE SOLD.

IT REALLY IS A PROCESS AND NOT EASY TO DO. BUT IT IS DONE AND WE HAVE A TITLE FOR THE BIKE. THIS WAS THE LOOP HOLE THAT DID NOT ASK FOR PRIOR TITLES AND OR EPA STANDARDS THAT WOULD PREVENT TITLING.

This kind of detail is usually not provided on the web because it help state agencies to close such loopholes.

Anyway, back to the bike. If you've been on the lookout for a low miles bike in the Southeast, this could be your day. Check out this 1996 Honda NSR250 MC28 For Sale:

quote from seller's Craigslist ad:

1996 HONDA NSR250 NSR 250 REPSOL SP.
FACTORY RACE BIKE.
MC28
SINGLE SIDED SWING ARM - PRO ARM
TWIN CYLDER
TWO STROKE
OIL INJECTED
WATER COOLED
DISC BRAKES - EBC BRAKES
KICK START
DRY CLUTCH
PGMIV MEMORY IGNITION CARD (NO KEY) LOOKS LIKE A CREDIT CARD
DIGITAL SPEEDOMETER
ORIGINAL PLASTICS
10,938 KM OR ONLY 6,797 MILES!!

THIS IS AN ULTRA RARE EXOTIC MOTORCYCLE. FROM MY READING IT APPREARS THAT THIS IS ONE OF ONLY 1,000 MADE FOR THIS YEAR AND MODEL. I BELIVE IT IS 657, LAST NUMBERS IN THE JAPANESE VIN. NOT PRODUCED FOR US EMISSIONS AND NOT IMPORTED HERE FOR STREET USE. BIKES WERE SOLD MOSTLY IN JAPAN OR EUROPE. SO DUE TO US EPA STANDARDS YOU CAN NOT GET A TITLE FOR STREET USE.

Depending on price, this could make for a great track bike or fixer.

Surfing the Local CL ads: 1997 Yamaha YZR1000R Thunderace For Sale

Here's another open class bike that caught my attention recently while surfing the local Craigslist motorcycle section - a cherry 1997 Yamaha YZR1000R Thunderace in black and gray. This one has 26k miles and is listed for $5800:

quote from seller's Craigslist ad:

One ownwer, 1997 Yamaha YZF1000R Thunderace, 1997 Sportbike of the year. Produced for one year only. Very RARE. Still one of the best handling most powerful bikes on the road.
Black/Silver, 26,000 miles, never down and never abused (no wheelies/stoppies)
Tuned (including having cams 'degreed') by Eric Dorn at EDR Performance, full Akropovic Titanium exhaust, K&N air filter, HeliBars, Attack rear sets, steel front brake lines, smoke windscreen, nearly new Pilot Power tires
I know of no maintenance issues with this bike. It is ready to ride.

$5800 sounds a bit lofty for this under appreciated bike, especially with such mileage. Not saying the bike is in jeopardy as a result of mileage, but at this price, I'd expect a lot less. The images sure do represent a well look after example though. I'll do some research to find out for sure like I did on the CBR900RR entries I posted recently.

After my ride to the Olympic Peninsula this past summer, I've been contemplating a more appropriate touring machine. The Ducati made the trip fine, but I felt terrible as it sat in the pouring rain overnight. While all it would've needed was a decent cover to avoid being totally neglectful, it got me to thinking about what a better mount might of looked like for such a task. Something tells me a bike like this with proper luggage might fit the bill and then some!

A Pair of Classic Yamaha Two-Strokes For Sale: Yamaha RZ350’s

Many of the readers coming to this blog are looking for the Yamaha RZ500, and while I haven't found one of those today, I have found two RZ350's for sale here in the Pacific Northwest.

1984 Yamaha RZ350 For Sale on Craigslist Spokane

quote from the seller's Craigslist post:

Spec 2 full fairing bodywork painted in the yellow/black color combo
Spec 2 expansion chamber exhaust
Mikuni 34mm carbs, custom billet intake with internal equalizer passage, pod airfilters, oversized reed cages and 4 petal reeds.
Adjustable steering damper, clip ons, billet tripple tree and fork brace.
Spec 2 rearsets
Fox clicker rear shock with remote reservoir
Re sprung front fork
Steel braided brake lines
Powdercoated frame

1984 Yamaha RZ350 For Sale on Craigslist Portland

quote from seller's Portland Craigslist ad $3600:

the bike comes with a slew of extras.
* original 80's full fairing kit with sqaire headlight conversion.
* extra tank
* extra tail
* extra front fender
* EXTRA ENGINE!!!

The bike has larger 30mm carbs with clamp on style k&n's. Allspeed pipes and silencers. new chain, sprockets, clutch, battery and brake pads.

this bike is oil injected so there is no worrys at the pump when it comes to premixing the fuel.

it has a adjustable steering stabilizer and a fork brace.

the bike has 28k but has had a recent top end to freshen things up.

Neither one of these are perfect beauty queens. But I like the full faired bodywork installed on the first one. And the second one offers a ton of spares plus full fairing bodywork pieces and a spare engine! And both are $4k or less! Seems like an affordable way into the classic bike market before these start going up in price - and a ton of fun to ride in the meantime!

Honda CBR900RR – 14 Good Looking Example For Sale Right Now!

In my last post I wondered aloud what the market was like for the CBR900RR, an iconic open class sportbike. After doing some real looking today, I have my answer: Act now while these are still widely available and cheap! Compared to most of the hardware I feature on this blog, there's nothing that can touch the value of this modern classic!

During my research, I quickly discovered that finding a clean Honda CBR900RR for sale wasn't as difficult as I expected. Some bikes have been more loved over the years than others though. With literally 50 or more examples available to choose from in less than an hour of shopping, I was able to narrow the field by looking for bikes under 20k miles, mostly original bodywork, no show or stunt bikes, tasteful and modest upgrade choices, and no rebuilt projects. This helped, but I still had 14 bikes that met the criteria!

The first group of 900RR's for sale are limited to the originals with dual headlamps, including model years 92-94. These were the bikes that captured my then 21 year old imagination and still look best to me. My pick of the litter is this 1993 CBR900RR on Craigslist Orange County:

The original black color scheme fits the character of this bike perfectly. At $5200 it's the most expensive one in this group, but I'd still call that a bargain considering the performance this bike promises. Here are 5 more that look really good, especially for the money:

In this second group, models from 95-99, the bike received some minor tweaks to the exterior, most notably the front facia and headlight display. The suspension also saw some revisions and is often retrofitted to earlier bikes. The standout, to me, in this group is this 9k mile 1999 CBR900RR for sale in Washington D.C.

It appears to be completely stock, and with that kind of mileage, it's practically as fresh a canvas as a brand new bike!

Here are a number of other standouts for sale from around the country, all with very reasonable mileage and offerings:

I want to give a big thanks to GPRacer2500 for his great comment on my original 900RR post. He gives a lot of insight with the past ownership of two 900RR's and gives some great advice on subtle differences and suggested upgrades. I was definitely inspired to spend some time looking after that read!

Have a 900RR for sale or have a story? Please leave a comment. Thanks!

1993 Honda NSR 250R MC21 SE For Sale in California

Last year for the MC21, this 1993 Honda NSR250 features the 'flash' bodywork. This a two owner, all California ownership bike (though the odometer reads in kilometers), and it has a good title and tags!

1993 Honda NSR 250R MC21 SE For Sale on eBayMotors:

quote from seller's eBayMotors listing:

This is a two owner 1993 SE model NSR250 MC21, it is VERY original and has been well kept with low miles and only a few tasteful mods. This bike has been in the US and CA titled for well over a decade.

Of all the NSR's I have had over the years this one sticks out as one of the most original, intact examples I have seen.

The last year of the MC21, an SE model in the "Flash" Honda colors.

Everything from the chassis to the engine on this 21 is very clean and unmodified! The bike is 15 years old, but does not look like it...there are some small flaws in the bodywork as you would expect, but the overall package is unreal for a 1993 MC21! The bike starts on 1-2 kicks, the feel, sound and power of the engine is like new, likewise with the rest of the bike, it truly is a time-capsule NSR....

This is an original SE model, dry clutch, adjustable suspension and standard aluminum wheels. It is an R9N code, last year of the MC21

This ad features probably 100 images of the bike from every angle, and he even faithfully notes all the flaws in the bodywork. Most of the pics show a really well looked after bike and a loving owner that paid attention to the right details but kept the bike largely stock. The buy-it-now on this bike is $9200. Feels a little on the high side, but if it checks out as a 'no stories ready to ride' example I could see the right buyer making the purchase.

If this MC21 NSR250 is a little out of reach, what about this 1990 MC21 I posted last week? Comments appreciated!
