Although the 750cc class is basically dead today, there was a time when middleweight sportbikes were the bikes to have, and competition between the Japanese Big Four was fierce in showrooms and on track. Kawasaki’s ZX-7, known elsewhere as the ZXR750 was perhaps The People’s Middleweight Sportbike of the era, a far more accessible and less exotic machine than the competition.

When factories get involved with production-based racing, there are a number of different ways to approach the problem of being competitive. Honda simply created a bike purpose-built for racing from scratch, then just made a few available for road use with their V4 RC30. Yamaha built a bike that looked like an FZR750, but was basically a hand-built race bike. And Suzuki used their “Limited Edition” Gixxers to homologate specific parts for the race teams to use, including a dry clutch.

Kawasaki, however, took a fourth approach, and designed a very solid roadbike with their ZX7, and then made a huge range of race parts available to customize the bike for nearly any type of competition, an à la carte race bike, if you will.

Powered by a 749cc inline four that made 105hp, the bike was famed for its stability and feel, but was infamous for a rear suspension that was too stiff for anything but billiard-table smooth roads. Riding position is very much period “in” versus “on” with a long, reach over that tank to the clipons and a great view of those largely ornamental HVAC tubes sprouting from the tank.

Today’s example has some serious miles on it for a lightweight sportster, but is still fitted with original plastics and appears to have been very well maintained.

This bike is in nice condition for its year and runs great. Has high miles due to long road trips up north but you would never know it by the condition. Always wiped down after every ride. Never down or dropped all plastic is original to the bike. Has always been maintained by the dealer has had valves and carbs done. Adult owned never beat on always garaged. Newer Pilot Powers on it Yoshimura exhaust K&N filter. Only issue is where the upper meets the lower fairing is cracked due to dealer over-tightening but they did not won up to it. Upper can still be bought on eBay. Please see pictures.

Oh, this bike comes exactly as pictured? That’s a relief, because I’d hate to think the seller’d remove those hideous fairing-mounted reflectors before selling it. I hope those were some sort of federally-mandated safety thing… And while the rear signals look original, the front flush-mounts are suspiciously clear. And flush.

These ZX-7’s have become very desirable of late and, with so few surviving the 90s uncrashed or unmolested, it’s getting harder and harder to find nice examples. In spite of the relatively high miles, this one is in clean shape and should appeal to collectors who prize originality.

Even if it means keeping those hideous reflectors.

Sometimes overshadowed by the GSX-R750 and a bit of an late arrival to the endurance-racer party in the late 1980’s, the Kawasaki ZXR-750 sold well, but few are around today, especially in such beautiful condition. The styling is very handsome, although it obviously helps if you’re a fan of Kawi’s lurid green paint…

Powered by a 749cc inline four that made a modest 105hp, the ZXR was still good for a top speed of over 150mph. Unlike Honda, Kawasaki didn’t build homologation specials like the RC30 for WSB racing, although serious hop-up kits were available to turn the ZXR into a fire-breather for track use: these motors can be easily tuned to much higher outputs, although naturally with a corresponding loss of reliability.

Both the ZXR-750 and the later ZX-7R were famous for their mid-corner stability and front-end feel. You sit in the bike, rather than on top like you would on a Ducati 916, and the tank is fairly long, with those air tubes to pressurize the airbox do intrude a bit, so long arms do help a bit.

Brakes were decent when new, although they will obviously benefit from modern pads and braided lines: this one looks like it still has the original rubber bits, although it’s hard to tell from the pictures.

1989 Kawasaki ZX7 H1 with less than 2500 miles on it now, since it was new… Bike speaks for itself. Runs and handles like a new bike should. I still ride it occasionally so mileage will change slightly.

Turn key gas-n-go. Has been serviced and is ready to ride. Needs nothing to be enjoyed.

If you’re looking for perfection go buy a NEW one! This bike is 26 years old and it looks and runs fantastic for its age. The black paint on the frame (by previous owner) is removable but doesn’t bother me so I haven’t finished removing it. I only did the one side since I have had it.

While the Yoshimura pipe is probably more appropriate for a period Suzuki, it still looks cool and gives the bike a very throaty growl and an evil, metallic intake rasp, as you can see from the video. The black-painted frame on the one side is a bit odd, but it sounds like that should be easy to fix before spring is in full swing. The headlights also look like they might not be completely stock, although additional visibility is always welcome and easily changed, if you prefer dim, older-style originality…

Although at under $5,000 the reserve has not been met, with under 2,500 original miles, this might be a good opportunity for fans of Team Green to pick up a very nice example for a reasonable price.

The big green machines are very popular here on RSBFS. While not nearly as rare as imported smokers or hand-made Italian exotica, the ZX7 H1 models defines everything that is right about sportbike evolution. Fast and looking like it just came off of the track, this generation of Ninja cemented Kawasaki’s reputation for delivering cutting-edge sport bikes that worked in the real world. Fast forward 25 years (yes, it has been that long!) and these fluorescent missiles still look every bit the business. While the last ZX7 we listed had but 2,300 miles, this particular example has a few more – but still fewer than 8,000! Can you give it a good home?

1989 Kawasaki ZX7. 7973 original miles. Completely original and unmodified except for new tires. I purchased this bike from the 63 year old original owner in 2011 with 7400 miles. Exceptional condition, runs perfect, and never dropped. All documentation including copy of original title, original dealership bill of sale, warranty card, unopened owners manual, original sales brochure, both original keys, under seat factory tool kit, factory service manual, etc included. Clear Florida title.

This bike looks very, very sano. With only two owners in the books, very few miles for the age, and all of the extras this bike is ripe for the picking. The auction has no reserve set, and the seller has set an opening bid of $7,000. That feels a bit high to start out with, but without a reserve the seller is certainly trying to protect his investment. Given how the bike looks, I can’t say I blame him – although it might dampen bidding enthusiasm. Check it out here and let us know what you think!

Mileage: <20,000 This is RSBFS fan Neal's baby and he is reluctantly selling it. Decked out in Classic Kawasaki Racing colors and ready to hit the road is Neal's good looking H1. Now for those of you who aren't familiar with the H1's, these started it all for Kawasaki and Muzzy with Doug Chandler at the helm. That's right, although the later versions K1, K2, M1, M2 and N1's garner more attention and have a certain savoir faire about them, it’s the H1’s that paved the way. I’ve always been a Kawasaki fan first and a Yamaha fan second and I fancy these early 7’s. Logging an average 952.38 miles a year, this one is sure to be in fine shape.

1989 Kawasaki ZX-7 with just shy of 20K miles on it. Nearly bone stock…

Own a piece of Super Bike History. 1989 was the first year of ZX-7 production, worldwide. Factory Race Team looks and fantastic performance made this a highly desired bike in it’s time. This is the same model bike as used by Doug Chandler to win the AMA Superbike Title in 1990.

Recent tune, including: oil system flushed, new oil filter, new plugs, air filter cleaned, brake and clutch fluids topped off, new battery, coolant system flushed, valve adjustment, carburetors cleaned and re-jetted, all pivot points checked and lubricated and and all wiring and fuses inspected. The only thing the bike still needs is new tires.

This bike is a former California model and as such had all of the emissions plumbing. This has all been removed, though may be included if you’d like, with the bike being re-tuned to suit. Performance is substantially better due to this modification.

Bike is all stock with the exception of the removal of the emissions components, the D&D exhaust and a Vance & Hines ignition advancer. Original bodywork, windscreen, seats, all of it. I do not have the stock exhaust, though I do have another aftermarket exhaust. A Yoshimura Zyclone full system with a Polished muffler. All components of the bike work as they should (blinkers, horn, brakes, starter, clutch, transmission, etc…). There are no ‘odd’ noises coming from any part of the bike or the motor. The original tool kit, with all originally included tools, is under the passenger seat. The only things missing from the bike are the original reflectors and the license plate light.

Bike does have light damage to the left side fairing, as seen in the photos. No cracks, just a few scrapes. Easily repairable.

Also included in this sale will be a replacement sticker for the left side fairing, a factory service manual and a book I made of prints of the micro-fiche showing all parts and assemblies.

And there you have it.. Put on a new set of skins and you’re ready to rock-n-roll and be the talk of your local bike night. I just remembered how long I’ve been a Kawi fan… Does anyone, besides me, remember being in grade school making noises like you’re shifting gears, but instead you used the motorcycle manufacturers name? It goes like this:

Kaawww (1st gear) waaaaaaa (2nd gear) saaaaaak (3rd gear) kiiii (4th gear) and so on.. 3rd grade- I was doing that! Ahh… the memories I have of motorcycling.

1989 Kawasaki ZX-7 H1 Ninja Completely Original, Signed By Doug Chandler & Scott Russell

A completely original ’89 ZX-7 signed by Doug Chandler and Scott Russell!  Located in Wasilla, Alaska is possibly a one owner 1989 ZX-7 with very low miles.  Pretty much everything on this bike is speculative as they only definitive information is gained from the photos.  The seller does state that he has owned this bike for twenty-one years, making possible that he is the original owner.  The seller does state that this bike is showroom perfect and that the tank has been signed by Doug Chandler and Scott Russell.  Unfortunately, the seller makes no mention of current mileage but this bike does look to be completely original–with a lime green windscreen which could almost be considers stock for the early ’90’s–with either low miles or a very careful owner.  These bike’s didn’t come signed by the boys so it’s very cool especially if you’re only planning on showing this bike.  The asking price of $4,000 is a bit higher than most other ’89 ZX-7’s but, I doubt any of them come anywhere close to this bike.  The seller may have time on his side getting things together as this bike is located in the frigid–and far–north making it a long trip from anywhere but Anchorage.  This is the first year for the ZX-7, it replaced the GPX750 with a new frame and uprated motor.  It wasn’t the most radical 750 out at the time as Kawasaki chose to sell a very good road bike that could be transformed into a race bike not the other way around.  Many of these bikes were dropped, modified, or raced during their short lives so it’s refreshing to see a very nice ZX-7 Ninja alive and well.  See this bike on Craigslist here.  Note:  The ad only lists a phone number for contact so, please be mindful of timezones.

1989 Kawasaki ZX-7 —— Rare Survivor

Our RSBFS Scout Jim is at it again and once again he has sent us a beauty.

A 1989 ZX-7 survivor with only 5821 miles and it looks fantastic! Located in Greensboro, NC this 20 year old gem looks to be all stock down to the rear mud flap that is still in tact.

Most of these were either trashed, bashed or crashed on the track, but this one somehow escaped the torture.

The 89’/90′ (H1/H2) ZX-7’s weren’t produced in the 7R Homologation versions like the 91’/92′ (K1/K2), but the H1/H2 represent Kawasaki’s first steps into the modern Replica Racer era. Kawasaki built a winner out of the box with the ZX-7 and in 1990 Doug Chandler won the AMA Super Bike Championship in only it’s second year of production.

Just in case anyone wants to know… These babies produced a whopping 84hp at the rear wheel and weighed in at over 500lb wet. Now, that is not so good by today’s standards, but wasn’t too shabby back in the day.

The owner has a lofty price of $8,999.00 on Kawasaki’s first year Super Bike. That is pretty steep considering the 7R I posted, that had everything going for it, only sold for $9,855.00. Now, I know there are some die hard ZX fans that follow our site so if your collection is missing the 89′ give these guys a ring see what can be worked out.
